Memorial Service For Anthon Flier Who Crashed At Sea
In honor of Ensign Alvin D. Eckert of Anthon, who crashed while flying in formation off the Pacific Coast July 4, a memorial service was held at Peiro-Bethel Methodist Church in Grant Township.
The body has not been recovered. Ensign Eckert attended East Junior School, Climbing Hill High School and Nebraska State Teachers College.
Rev. W.C. Smith, pastor of the church, spoke on The First Honor Guard.
John Spray, sailor fireman, presented Mrs. Alvin Eckert and his mother, Mrs. Fred Eckert, with navy wings. A letter from Rear Admiral Downs, Ninth naval district commandent, was presented.
Those attending included representatives of Sioux City’s Navy Mothers, Moville American Legion post and McNiff post 289 of Anthon. The latter post furnished the colors bearers, color guards and bugler.

Alvin Davis Eckert was born Feb. 3, 1920 to Fred L. and Ida May Davis Eckert. He died July 4, 1942 and has a cenotaph in Peiro-Bethel Cemetery, Woodbury County, IA.
