Dr. Howard Cutler, 77, Alaska
Dr. Howard Cutler, 77, Fairbanks, Alaska, died at his home on Nov. 17, 1995. A memorial service was held in the Charles David Concert Hall on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
Dr. Howard A. Cutler was born on April 27, 1918 in Webster City. He worked his way through the University of Iowa as a cook, gardener, housekeeper and chauffeur. He graduated from Iowa in 1940 and received a master’s degree a year later. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy in Guam and Saipan as a supply and disbursing officer. In 1953, he received his doctorate in economics from Colombia University. He began his teaching career in 1946 and held faculty positions in economics at the University of Illinois, the University of Chicago and Penn State University. From 1966 to 1976, he served as senior vice president of the Institute of International Education in New York City. In 1976, he returned to Fairbanks as chancellor of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Stricken with Parkinson’s disease in 1981, he remained active in community and university affairs until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Enid Ellison Cutler and the couple’s children, Cheryl, Kristen and Thor.
