William Carroll, 94, formerly of Webster City
William E. Carroll (Bill) of St. George, Utah peacefully passed away April 27, 2017, surrounded by family and dear friends. He was born December 3, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois and formerly of Gillette, Wyoming and Webster City, Iowa.
Following his birth in Chicago, his family returned to the Carroll family homestead where he was raised. Bill graduated high school in 1939, then attended Carroll College located in Helena, Montana, graduating in 1943. Following his discharge from the Navy Bill started his career in education in Gillette, Wyoming.
In 1962, he married Margaret Jean Schiess, the love of his life. After the birth of their son, Patrick, the family moved to Webster City, Iowa in 1967 where Bill was Director of Elementary Education until his retirement in 1988. This was a fulfillment of a dream to always help kids. He was involved in projects like Hand Across the Border and opening the Pleasant View Elementary gym once a week to coach kids in basketball. He was always loved by his students and he loved them.
During this time, Bill also served as President of the Rotary Club in Webster City and was CCD teacher at the Catholic Church. Bill departed Iowa in 2001, leaving many dear friends, and moved to St. George, Utah to live with his son Patrick.
Bill really enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his sons. He enjoyed both dirt and road riding. He also enjoyed the blue skies for many hours with his son Pat in a small airplane and at one point started to learn to fly himself.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Jean, daughter Kathleen, his parents and sisters Lucille Gallagher and Jean Becht. Bill is survived by his sons and their wives Paul and Gwynne Schiess and Patrick and Jennifer Carroll, and by his grandsons Tom and Jeff Schiess as well as three nieces and one nephew.
A Mass of Christian Funeral will be celebrated Friday, May 12 at the St. George Catholic Church, St. George, Utah. Internment will occur in Gillette, Wyoming on September 8, 2017.
