Royal Dean Barnes, Sr. was born Feb. 20, 1918 to Harry Edward and Laurina Belle Burgess Barnes. He died Nov. 5, 2002 and is buried in Lake City Cemetery, Lake City, IA.
Sgt. Barnes served in World War II with the U.S. Army 163rd Infantry Regiment, First Battalion, 41st Division, Headquarters Company, as a radio operator in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch East Indies, Philippine Islands and Japan. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star, Bronze Arrowhead, Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon with three stars and arrowhead, American theater ribbon and victory ribbon.
