SGT. ROY W. BETTIS KILLED
Central High Graduate Was on B-24 Liberator
Sgt. Roy W. Bettis, 22, formerly listed as missing in action, is now reported killed in action September 9, 1944, over Mainz, Germany, according to notification received from the War Department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer A. Bettis, 515 W. 15th street.
Sgt. Bettis, a graduate of Central high school, was employed by Johnson Biscuit company prior to entering the service September 2, 1943. He received his gunner’s wings at Laredo, Tex., and reported for duty in England last June where he was stationed with a B-24 Liberator group in the Ninth air force.
Survivors besides his parents, include a sister, Lucille, and a brother, Arthur jr., both at home. Another sister, Mrs. John V. Larson, is living in Belton, Tex.

Roy W. Bettis was born Dec. 19, 1922 to Elmer Arthur and Mary Virginia McKenzie Bettis. He died Sept. 9, 1944 and is buried in Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold, France.
Sgt. Bettis served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 392nd Bomb Group, 578th Bomb Squadron and was a crew member on a B-24 (Liberator) and was MIA/KIA while on a bombing mission to Mainz, Germany. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
