Charles Allen "Doc" Baird was born Sept. 4, 1919, and passed away Aug. 12, 2013, the son of Ray and Ruth Baird.He was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa and spent the early part of his life on the Baird farm in Cass Township north of Webster City, Iowa.He was active in 4-H work, exhibiting Jersey cattle, Duroc swine, and Hampshire sheep at the Iowa State Fair and county fairs in Iowa. He attended Iowa State College and obtained two degrees, a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry and a doctor of veterinary medicine.Allen was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and had a veterinary practice in Alturas, Calif., after his discharge from the Korean Conflict. He spent 30 years in meat inspection for the U.S.D.A. in Washington and Oregon. He and his children exhibited many Shorthorn steers, Jersey cattle, Berkshire hog, and Suffolk, Horned Dorset and Border Cheviot sheep at major livestock shows in the Western U.S.On April 27, 1947, he married Betty June Donaldson and to this union six children were born: Williams Allen (deceased), Ruth Elizabeth, Charles Allen Jr., Althea Ann, Ben Lee and Andrew Noel.Late in life, Allen wrote a column for the Agri-News in Billings, Mont. His byline was "Here's another one by 'Doc Baird'." He would like to be remembered as an able breeder and developer of livestock.He leaves seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, family, friends and associates.His parents, wife Betty, younger brothers Alfred and Billy, son Bill and grandson William Zane preceded him in death.
