Leg Amputated.
Another casualty of war on the western front, Pfc. Roland E. Wick, 27, wounded in action March 20 while in action in Germany, underwent amputation of his left leg above the knee, and is now making satisfactory recovery in a general hospital in France, according to a letter received from him by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Wick, 836 Western avenue.
The letter, dictated by Private Wick to First Lt. Frank Quinn, 413 Argyle street, also a patient in the same hospital, was received three days after word was received here informing Mr. and Mrs. Wick that their son had been wounded.
“A German shell landed near me and exploded,” Private Wick wrote, “resulting in shrapnel wounds in my left shoulder and left leg, which had blasted so badly it had to be amputated above the knee.”
Stationed with the Seventh army, Private Wick has been overseas since last January. A former teacher at Dysart high school, where his wife, the former Yvonne Kopp of Sioux City, Ia., is now teaching, Wick entered service in July, 1944.
He is a graduate of West high school and Iowa State Teachers college.
