Pvt. Frank Way Is
Killed in Germany
Cedar Falls – Pvt. Frank Way, former Waterloo man, has been killed in action Feb. 23, in Germany, according to a telegram from the war department received by his wife who lives with her son, Ronnie, age 3, at 706 West 12th street.
Private Way was inducted in August, 1944, and had been overseas since Jan. 1, 1945. He was in Belgium on the 26th and the last letter his wife received was written Feb. 22, the day before his death, in which he state that he wanted her to remember what he bought her for her birthday. Mrs. Way stated that his gift was a large bottle of cologne and she thus surmised he was stationed at Cologne, Germany.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Way, Plainfield, he was born in Waterloo Dec. 9, 1919, and married Ruth Hayes in Cedar Falls May 5, 1941.
He attended the Waterloo schools and worked at the Rath Packing Co. before his enlistment. He and his wife and son lived until that time at 219 Lane street, Waterloo.

Pfc. Frank Way Memorial Rites
To Be Thursday
Cedar Falls – Memorial services for Pfc. Frank Way will be held Thursday at 10 a. m. at St. Patrick’s church, with Rev. Fr. S. J. Mauerer officiating.
Private Way was killed in action with the infantry at Daubenbrath, Germany, Feb. 23. His wife and son, Ronnie, live at 706 West 12th street.
The American Legion and auxiliary will have charge of the service and will meet in a body outside the church. The public is invited.

Posthumous Silver Star to Frank Way
Cedar Falls – Mrs. Frank Way, 706 West 17th street, has received word that the Silver Star has been awarded posthumously to her husband, Pfc. Frank W. Way, infantryman, with the following citation:
“For gallantry in action Feb. 23, 1945, in Germany. Although enemy fire pinned down their platoon, Private Way and his comrades refused to be deterred but advanced in the face of the direct fire and overran one position, capturing four snipers. They searched the buildings of a town for another sniper under incessant fire until they had killed him. Private Way was moving back to his platoon when he was caught in a murderous mortar concentration and immediately killed.”
The decoration will be forwarded to the commanding general, Seventh service command, Omaha, Neb. who will select an officer to make the presentation.

Pvt. Frank Way served in World War II with the U.S. Army 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division and was KIA and buried in Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
