Pvt. Lloyd Waskow Dies Under Train

Mishap at Baltimore Fatal;
Wife, Four Children Here.

Pvt. Lloyd R. Waskow, 34, whose wife and four children reside at 2153 Lafayette street here, was reported killed yesterday when he fell beneath the wheels of a Pennsylvania railroad train in Baltimore, Md., according to an Associated Press dispatch.

The victim, attached to the army postoffice in New York City, boarded the train in New York in early morning with a ticket for Washington, D. C.

His wife, who has received no official word, said that he intended “to see as much of the east as possible while he was there” and presumed his Washington trip was planned with a weekend pass.

Born June 26, 1910, on a farm in Fayette county, near Sumner, son of John and Sarah Waskow, he worked on surrounding farms as a youth. On Oct. 6, 1929, he married Marie Heise at Stanley, Ia., where she was teaching. They resided in Stanley, Waskow driving an oil truck, until 1938 when they moved to Denver, Ia., where he worked as a buttermaker. In 1940, they moved to La Porte City and he worked in a creamery there until moving to Waterloo.

He had been employed at Rath Packing Co. until entering service May 26, 1944. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran church here.

He received army training at the Aberden, Md., Proving Ground.

Police said he stepped from the train just before it came to a stop at Pennsylvania station at Baltimore.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, James Russell, 8, and John Edward, 6; two daughters, Dorothy Marie, 12, and Verla June, 10; his mother, 814 Glenwood street; seven brothers, Donald, 1822 Franklin street; LeRoy, Hazelton, Ia.; Walter, Wacoma, Ia.; Harold, Maynard, Ia.; Howard, Marshalltown, Ia.; Robert, Home Acres; and Charles, seaman second class in the Pacific theater; and one sister, Elberta Waskow, 813 Glenwood.

Waskow Rites Here Thursday

Funeral services for Pvt. Lloyd R. Waskow, 34, of 2153 Lafayette street, fatally injured Saturday beneath the wheels of a Pennsylvania railroad train in Baltimore, Md., will be held at 3 p. m. Thursday in Trinity American Lutheran church. Rev. G. E. Melchert, pastor, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.

The soldier’s body will arrive at Peterson Bros. funeral home at 8:30 a. m. Wednesday, and will remain there until time for services.
