Lt. Townsend Rites to Be Wednesday
The body of First Lt. Clarence A. Townsend, 26, killed in action on May 12, 1944, in the Anzio valley in Italy while serving with the infantry, will arrive here at 5:10 p. m. Tuesday on the Illinois Central railroad.
Returned to Waterloo for reburial from an Italian cemetery, the body will be taken to O’Keefe & Towne funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p. m. at the funeral home by Rev. Calvin Loper, pastor of the Church of the Open Bible, Des Moines, a former schoolmate of the deceased. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
Born here on Nov. 10, 1917, he was the son of Charles and Vera Townsend. Following graduation from West high school in 1935, he was employed at the Adams grocery store, formerly located on Elm street, until his induction.
He enlisted in June, 1941, completing the first phase of his training and earning merits qualifying him for OCS. In August, 1942, he graduated from officer’s candidate school at Ft. Benning Ga., as a second lieutenant.
Prior to his overseas transfer in February, 1944, he trained at Ft. Jackson, S. C., going abroad as commander of his company.
Survivors include his widow, who is living in Iowa Falls; his father, residing at 1007 East Fourth street; his mother, 629 Pine street; a brother, Jack W., 1116 Glenny avenue; two sisters, Mrs. Everett Jensen, 629 Pine street, and Mrs. Elery Michelson, Fairbank, Ia.; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. James Brown, Des Moines.
