REPORTED MISSING
Pfc. Charles E. Swanson, jr., has been missing in action since Dec. 25, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Swanson, sr., 518 Clark avenue, were notified Monday.

Awarded Purple Heart After Death
Pfc. Charles E. Swanson, jr., missing in action since a transport on which he was riding was sunk in the European theater on Dec. 25, 1944, has been posthumously awarded the purple heart, according to an announcement by Secretary of War Henry Stimson.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Swanson, 518 Clark avenue, parents of the missing soldier, received the award Monday.

Memorial Rites
Memorial rites will be held here Sunday for two Council Bluffs service men killed in action, Pfc. Charles E. Swanson, jr., and Darwin A. Christensen, ship’s cook 2/c.

NOTE: Pfc. Charles E. Swanson was aboard the SS Leopoldville when it was attacked by U-boat 486. Hit by one torpedo, the Leopoldville sank approximately 5 miles off of Cherboug, France, with a loss of 55 crew members and 763 soldiers. Pfc. Swanson was serving with H Company, 262nd Infantry of the 66th Infantry.
