Frank La Scala Killed in Action, Father Informed
Pfc. Frank La Scala, jr., 23-year-old infantryman, was killed in action on Biak island January 10, 1945, his father, John La Scala, 714 Clark street, was informed by the War Department. Details were lacking.
The soldier was inducted here September 21, 1942, and was stationed at Camp Ward and later at Camp Fontana, both in California.
He came here in June of 1943 on a four-day furlough. He went overseas and landed in New Guinea in September of 1943. He has a brother, Pvt. Gus J. La Scala, who has been in Italy for the last two years.
Before Pfc. La Scala’s induction he worked on the beef killing floor of the Armour & Co. plant. He was born in Sioux City.
Surviving are the father and his brother.
A requiem memorial mass will be said at 9 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Catholic church. Rev. Edward C. Lilly will officiate.

Gus J. LaScala, son of Mr. Joe LaScala, 714 Clark Street, recently was promoted from the rank of private first class to that of sergeant while serving as a cook with the First armored division of the Fifth Army in Italy.

Gus Joseph LaScala was born Feb. 4, 1924 to Joe and Jenny Defazio LaScala. He died Mar. 7, 1992.
Gus served with the U.S. Army in World War II.
