M. HAYHURST IS KILLED IN ACTION
Was with Marines at Iwo Jima—Brother’s Wife is Former Mapleton Girl
Pvt. Maynard Hayhurst, son of Mrs. Nancy Hayhurst of Rodney, was killed in action in March on Iwo Jima with the Marines, according to a telegram received by his mother from the War Department this week.
He is survived by his widow and small child, who live near Chicago; his mother; one brother, Milton Hayhurst of Rodney; and two sisters, Mrs. Murl Lulumendre at Rodney, and Miss Majorie Hayhurst in California.

Remains of Monee Veteran to Arrive Here for Burial.
The casketed remains of Private Maynard James Hayhurst, Monee, a World War II deceased member of the Marines will arrive in Momence within the next month accompanied by a uniformed Marine escort from the Chicago distribution center of the American Graves Registration division. The body of Private Hayhurst was interred in the Iwo Jima temporary military cemetery in Kazan Retto, but has been returned to this country for final interment at the request of his next of kin, Mrs. Maynard J. Hayhurst, Monee. Lt. Colonel J. Grinnell, Chief of the Chicago Distribution Center, stated that no information as to delivery dates will be given out earlier than five days prior to the actual delivery. Automatically at this time a telegram will be sent to the consignee-in most cases the funeral director designated by the next of kin to receive the remains-giving the day and even the hour of arrival as well as the name of the accompanying uniformed escort.
So far, 71 percent of the Gold Star families contacted have indicated their desire to have their war dead brought back to their homeland. Thus over 15,000 of Illinois fallen dead will be returned through the Chicago Distribution Center in the next two years.

Services for Veteran Killed at Iwo Jima To be Held Saturday.
Veterans organizations in Momence and surrounding towns will attend in a body at funeral services Saturday for Maynard James Hayhurst, Monee.
Final rites will be conducted in the Canaday chapel with Rev. C. Schruff, pastor of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church, officiating. Interment will be in Momence Cemetery.
Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friends may call at the chapel from 7-9 p.m. Friday.
Hayhurst, a private in the U.S. Marine Corps, was killed in action March 17, 1945, on Iwo Jima. He was a member of Co. B, 21st Bn, of the Third Marine division. Three ex-servicemen from the VFW and three from the American Legion will serve as pallbearers.Surviving the deceased are his wife, the former Marjorie Nieland, a daughter, Sandralynn, 5 mother, Mrs. Nancy Hayhurst, Hornick, Iowa; uncle R.J. Chamberlain, Kankakee; a brother Milton Hayhurst, Rodney, Iowa, two sisters Mrs. Marjorie Holl, Monee, and Mrs. Mattie Lalumendre, Rodney; and a grandmother, Mrs. Emilie Miller, Aurora.
Born May 6, 1919, in Baleton, Minn., the deceased was married April 5, 1941, in Frankfort, Ill. He enlisted in the Marines June 28, 1944 and served with distinction until his death.
