Veteran of Major Battles in Pacific Home on Leave
A veteran of major battles at Tarawa, Bougainville, Leyte, Formosa, Tuk and Guadalcanal, is George Robert Foster, 20, radar man third class, now home on a 20-day leave visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Foster, 6000 Garretson avenue.
The light cruiser aboard which he was stationed had several thrilling experiences. Once his ship was hit by a torpedo bomber and was forced to return to the States for repairs. Although some of his shipmates were killed, he came through safely.
Mr. Foster spent 18 months in the South Pacific area and wears the American theater of war and Asiatic-Pacific campaign bars with six battle stars. After enlisting August 26, 1942, he received boot training at the Great Lakes Naval training station and later signal and radar training in Chicago. He is a graduate of the Lawton, Ia., high school.
