ENO TO HEAD GUARD AIRMAN
Named Commanding Officer of State’s Nat’l Guard Corps
DES MOINES (AP) – Ellis E. Eno, 34, Fort Dodge, today was appointed by Gov. Robert D. Blue as commanding officer of the Iowa national guard’s air corps, with the rank of colonel.
He will direct the 132nd fighter group, made up of 957 men and officers and about 60 plans, stationed at Des Moines and Sioux City. He will replace Lieut. Col. C. Lester Orcutt, Iowa aeronautics commission director, whose appointment was rejected by federal authorities on the basis of age.
Eno, who had considerable service in World War II and in which he won several decorations, is an airport manager at Fort Dodge. He has had approximately 4,000 hours in the air as a commercial pilot and about 700 hours in service aircraft.
Under his command will be the 124th fighter squadron of Des Moines and the 174th fighter squadron of Sioux City.
Eno enlisted in the 124th observation squadron of the Iowa national guard in April of 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant shortly afterward. He entered the federal
Service with the 124th as a captain late in 1941 and served in the Mediterranean and Middle East theaters of [the] war.
During the war he served as flight commander, base operations officer, base executive, base commander, group deputy commander, wing air instructor and wing chief of staff.
Eno graduated from the command and general staff school at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
His war service won him the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the European theater ribbon with six battle stars, the Presidential Citation with one cluster, and the American theater, American defense and Victory ribbons.
Eno is married and has a wife and son.
