Paul Earl Schertz was born Nov. 28, 1925 to Roscoe and Edith L. Harness Schertz. He died Nov. 20, 1943 and is buried in Shaul Cemetery, Ottumwa, IA. He was initially buried in a 2nd Marine Division Cemetery on Tarawa and returned to the U.S. in 1948.
Pvt. Schertz served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division and was KIA on Tarawa.

William Francis Schmitz was born Nov. 12, 1919 to Frank H. and Edith Ann Miers Schmitz. He died June 10, 1942 and is buried in Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.
Pvt. Schmitz served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps and was MIA after the surrender of Corregidor. He became a POW and died in a POW camp in the Philippine Islands as a result of Vincent’s angina.
