Seeking information on the KREITZER (Czech spelling Greicar,Grejcar, etc) family. Mathias Kreitzer, born 1834, in Bohemia; married in Germany in 1863 to Agnes Schermer; died and was buried in Spillville, Winneshiek County, Iowa, in 1892. Mathias and his brother, Albert, both worked on St. Wenceslaus Church in Spillville--but Mathias was a farmer there. Albert eventually moved to South Dakota. I am searching for the parents of Mathias and Albert Kreitzer.

Has anyone heard the word or phrase, "crime-un-itly"? This is just a try at typing it as it sounded to me. My Father used to say it, and he spent summers of his boyhood in Decorah, visiting the Sohrt family and the Shea family. I am beginning to wonder if it is from another language, say Irish. In Irish, there is a word, "Crymonas" which translated means "Oh, crikey". The phrase was in existence as late as 1974, when I heard a waitress at a Decorah cafe use it.

Jacob MONK b. bet. 1806-1821 in New York, he went to Ontario, Canada and was married in 1849 to Jane CRAWFORD b. bet. 1827-1830 in Ireland. They had seven children: Henry b. 1850 Canada, Susanna b. 1851, Canada, John b. 1852, Canada, George b. 1855 Winneshiek co, Iowa, James E. b. 1858 Winneshiek, Alexander b. 1860 Winneshiek and Daniel b. 1863 Winneshiek. Most of the family ended up in Clay and Palo Alto counties, Iowa. I have found the family in Madison twp for the 1860 and 1870 census's. In 1860, the families of Henry CRAWFORD, John CRAWFORD, George CRAWFORD and John CRAWFORD, Jr. were found living next to the Monk's, I believe that one of these are her parents, most likely John Crawford. Any information about this family would be greatly appreciated

Searching for information in WINNESHIEK Cty, IA. Living descendants of my Great, Great Grandmother, MARTHA MONSDATTER's parents were MONS and KATHERINA MONSON. However, my research leads me to believe otherwise. It was understood that MARTHA, her parents & another daughter emigrated from BERGEN area of Norway in 1853 or 1854, settling in WINNESHIEK Cty, IA. It's understood MARTHA's parents died while living in WINNESHIEK Cty. MARTHA married my gg Grandfather, JOHANNES O. (OLESON, OLESEN, or OLSEN) SKAURUD in Winneshiek Cty in abt 1856. However, it appears my gg Grandfather was known as JOHN OLSEN, a laborer, during 1856 Census of GLENWOOD TWP at age 26 (he was born 27 Aug 1829 near KOLBU, Norway). This 1856 Census also shows (on same sheet) CHATHRIN ELISON, age 41; MARTHY ELERSON, age 15; ESTHER ELERSON, age 12; OLE ELERSON, age 4; and a male son, age 2. The 16 Aug 1860 GLENWOOD TWP Census now shows a CATHERINE OLESEN, age 45; ESTHER, age 16, OLE, age 8; and HANS, age 6. These people have to be same as in 1856 Census; however, "MARTHY" is not shown. Believe this "MARTHY" is actually my gg Grandmother who married my gg Grandfather in 1856. The Aug 1860 GLENWOOD TWP Census also shows a JOHN OLESON, age 30, a farmer, with wife named "MARTHA", age 19; son OLE C., age 3; and MARY C., age 4/12. This is definitely my gg Grandparents and children - including their son, Ole (my Great Grandfather) as ages for 2 children are as should be. I could not locate MARTHA's mother in a 1860 Census, who I presume to be the CATHERINE shown in 1856 Census where she must haved started using the OLESEN name of her "new" son-in-law). The July 1870 Census of FRANKVILLE TWP shows JOHN OLSON, MARTHA, OLE C., CORNELIA M., ALBERT, AND FRANK S. Of CATHERINE's children, there was a HANS OLESON or spelling could have been OLESEN as difficult to read in Aug 1870 Census for GLENWOOD TWP and appears his occupation was he worked in blacksmith shop. I couldn't identify CATHERINE's other children, ESTHER and OLE. Also, don't know what happened to CATHERINE's husband, MONS. Perhaps he died on voyage from Norway, or died soon after arriving WINNESHIEK Cty? It had been thought that MARTHA's sister's name was MINNIE, who married JOHN OLAVUS MOE, who had been Postmaster at OSSIAN IA. However, I believe MARTHA's sister is actually the ESTHER (as shown above), who later married JOHN MOE's father, OLE O. MOE. See Winneshiek County, Iowa, Biographies - 1996, which shows OLE marrying AASE MONSON. I understand AASE is ESTHER in America. That history book shows AASE (ESTHER) was born in 1844 in the SOGN (north of Bergen) area of Norway and OLE MOE was born in 1840. As further information, JOHN and MARTHA's son, OLE C. (my Great Grandfather), later married HELMINE (SKINDERVIKEN) VICK. Please contact me at Rcstnbrg@Juno.com

I am researching the family of William E. KIMBER and Rosanna BRUNDAGE of Burr Oak, Iowa and would like to hear from anyone also working on this family. They were originally from Minisink, Orange Co., New York. William E. KIMBER was born Nov. 20, 1815 and died March 2, 1904 in Burr Oak at his son's home, George KIMBER. Rosanna BRUNDAGE was born Oct. 3, 1820 and died July 8, 1891 in Hesper Township, Winneshiek Co., Iowa. William E. KIMBER left New York State about 1850 and relocated to Rock Co., Wisconsin. Later he moved his family to Lansboro, Minnesota and then to Burr Oak, Iowa. I have done a lot of work on the KIMBER family in Orange Co., New York and will be glad to share with all.

I'm descended from several Norwegians that settled in Winneshiek County, Iowa. I'm researching all lines and would be interested in hearing from you if your related. Researching the following surnames: Hill/Hell (John/Johan), Hendrickson (both Hans & Henrick Hendrickson families), Fadnes (Henrick), and Serdahl (Nels or daughter Olava). Other related names are Teslow, Geving (Bjorn and Ingeborg), and Langeland. I'm interested in not just names and dates, but I want to know who my ancestors were. They settled in Glenwood Twp., Canoe Twp., and Pleasant Twp. I'm interested in what the area was like at the time they arrived from Norway, which would be between 1850 and 1884 depending on the line.

Erik Olsen Mellem and his wife Maren Martinsdatter Roya emmigrated from Brandval Parish in the Solor area of Norway to Decorah in 1871. His sister, also named Maren, and her husband Peter Korsmoe or Kosmo are said to have also emmigrated with Erik and Maren, but may have settled elsewhere. I have also been told that a brother, possible Ole Mellem emmigrated also, probably to Decorah. Family lore says that he moved to the Grand Forks, ND area and changed his name to Miller. Erik and Maren were the parents of Olivia, Thea, Minda (Mae) and Olavus (Louis). If this is your family, or if you have information about the Korsmoes or Ole Mellem, please contact me.
