Beal, Edwin Joshua -

Edwin Joshua Beal was born Aug. 4, 1911 in Bedford, Iowa, the son of Edwin Joseph Beal and Cora Belle Cannon

and died October 10, 2003 in Portland, Or. at the age of 92. Funeral services were held at Mt. Scott Funeral Home in

Portland on Oct. 14, 2003.

Ed met his wife Dorothy Boyer at Sunday school. They married in 1933, but had no wedding picture because

nobody had a camera. To this union, three children were born: Cora, Julia and Eddie. They had been married just

shy of 70 years when Ed died.

Ed Beal was always good with horses, and growing up on an Iowa farm, he plowed with Belgian draft horses

before his family had tractors. His favorite Belgian was Hobart, a horse he had helped raise to 3,300 pounds in the

1920s by feeding it high-butterfat milk straight from the Guernsey cow.

Ed always claimed Hobart was the biggest horse in the world, and he may be right; various sources list the

largest horse at 3,200 pounds. Hobart was sold to the Barnum & Bailey Circus at $1 a pound. The circus put him

on display, but he was killed in a circus train accident.

Ed also raised Guernseys. "Holsteins give skim milk," he said, "Ours gave cream".

Ed loved being an Iowa farmer and was sad to leave the life behind; but he and his wife, Dorothy, moved to

Portland hoping for help for their son, Eddie, who suffered severe brain damage when he was hit by a truck at age 7. Ed

sold all of his farm equipment and everything except their clothes and a few prized possessions. They shipped the

refrigerator out on the train because it was new.

Ed and Dorothy kept Eddie home until he was 22, tirelessly caring for him and wheeling him around. Eddie

is now in a Good Shepherd home.

Ed and his son-in-law, Buddy Jones, built a house in Portland in 1956 that was his home for the rest of his life.

In 1957, he took a job as head custodian of the Masonic Temple in downtown Portland and tended to the entire

facility, including waxing and polishing the floor in the grand ballroom.

Ed was a toddler when his mother died. His father died a few years later. Their house was rented out, but Ed and his

brother, Arthur, stayed there and were cared for by their half-sister, Helen Beal (Higgens) and by renters.

When he was four, Ed tagged along to the one-room school house with his siblings because there was no one to

take care of him. He went to high school for two years before he left to work the farm.

Ed and Dorothy butchered their own beef, pork and chickens, and a large garden and orchards kept them fed

through the Depression. Ed was exempt from military service because he was a farmer.

He devoured Zane Grey novels, loved westerns on TV and listened to Johnny Cash, Ernie Ford and Grand Ole

Opry. Roy Rogers was his hero. He collected agates and thundereggs and always had the rock tumbler going. The

grandchildren were fascinated by Grandpa's polished agates, in big baskets on the fireplace. He made clocks and jewelry

with polished rocks.

Ed was not much of a talker, didn't argue and didn't generally start conversations. His attempts at disciplining

his children provoked merriment. But everyone remembers how angry he got when a grandson climbed too high in a tree.

After Ed retired in 1976, he needed to stay busy. He took up counted cross-stitch and got so good he won prizes.

He cross stitched four covered bridges of Madison County, lighthouses and barns, but his family's favorite

is one of a horse.

Ed's great great grandfather, John Beal, Sr., was born in Exeter, England around 1775, and came to this country in

October of 1810 along with his two sons. Ed's great grandfather, John Beal, Jr., eventually settled in

Maryville, Mo. where he spent the rest of his life. Ed's grandfather, B.J. Beal was a resident of Taylor County for about

half a century. He taught school at the one-room Beal School in Benton township. He died in 1915. Beal School later

changed its name to Bailey School and Ed attended school here and later both his daughters, Cora (Cokey) and

Julia (Judy) also-attended here.

Ed is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters Cora Jones and Julia Skipton; son, Eddie;-five grandchildren; 13

great grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Remembrances may be sent to Good Shephard Communities, 720 Washing-ton St., Hillsboro, Or. 97123.

Murphy, Flavel Benjamin III (Jay) -

Funeral services for Jay Murphy, age 40 of Bedford, who died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 were held Monday,

November 24, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating.

Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford. Memorials can be given in Jay's name.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Flavel (Jay) Benjamin Murphy III was born November 9, 1963 in Maryville, Missouri the son of Flavel (Ben) Benjamin

Murphy, Jr., and Barbara Jean King Murphy. Jay grew up in the Bedford area and spent all of his adult life here. Jay's mother

tragically passed away when he was five years old. Due to these circumstances, he and his younger brother were raised by their

grandparents, Flavel and Mary Beth Murphy. He graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1982. After

graduation, Jay farmed and on November 29, 1985, he married his best friend, Jeannie Whitten. The two began their lives

together on a farm southeast of Bedford where Jay worked as a farm hand for Ken Jennett. Jay then spent many hours working

on the farms of Jack Wackernagle and Paul Jones.

In 1991, Jay began working for Lyndell Streebin and did so for eight years. This was the beginning of a relationship that

would grow into something so meaningful and cherished that Jay considered Carol and Lyndell second parents. They spent many

hours talking and becoming a family.

In January of 1999, he started his career of working for Taylor County on the bridge crew. He then moved on to run the

maintainer out of Sharpsburg. Then in April of 2003, he started driving a truck, hauling rock. He also worked for Paul and Nancy

Ackley. He somehow found the time to help on the Sharpsburg Fire Department as Assistant Fire Chief.

Jay loved to farm and that is where he found the most comfort. He worked so hard and often did so much for little or

nothing. He was such a hard worker, more than dependable and one of the most trustworthy men around. No one questioned

what he could do.

His true passion was his family. Jay worshiped the ground Jeannie walked on and truly believed in the love they shared.

The unconditional love he had for his children was so visible. He enjoyed spending time with Missy, more often referred to as

"Shorty"; teaching her how to break her two horses. Jay was always there to help Ben when his three-wheeler was not

running just right and he spent many hours pushing April in her swing and trying to keep up with her endless energy. It was

evident that his family was his focus in life. He would have given anything for them.

Left to cherish Jay's memory is his soul mate and life partner, Jeannie; oldest daughter, Missy; son Ben; and youngest

daughter April, all of Bedford; grandmother Mary Beth Murphy of Bedford and grandmother Arlene King of New Market;

brother Billy Murphy and wife Becky of North Carolina; sisters, Ginny Coats and husband George, and son Jake of Omaha; and

Jackie Smith and daughters, Shelly, Jennifer and Lindsay of Bedford; brothers-in-law, Jim Whitten and wife Cinda and their

children Kayla, Michael and Evan of Winterset; Jason Whitten and wife Erin and their daughter Jaci of Runnells; Todd Fisher

and wife Johanna and their children Bryce, Brandon and Brenna of Altoona; Matt Murphy and mother-in-law, Linda Murphy

also of Altoona; along with a host of family and friends.

Preceding Jay in death are his mother Barbara Jean Murphy and father Flavel Benjamin Murphy, Jr.; and his

grandfathers, Flavel Benjamin Murphy and Ross King.
