services for Donna Adams was held on Wednesday, September 13 at the Coen Beaty Funeral Home
in
Lenox.
Officiating
the services was Rev. Dena Woldruff. Taped selections

Bryan Price, Herman Davis, and David Jansen.
Donna
Kay Adams was born March 16, 1943 in Leon, Iowa to Wayne Adams and Thelma Webb
Adams. At the
age
of 7 or 8 Donna's Dad remarried, and Ann became a
very special step-mother.
Having
been raised on a farm near Ringgold County, Donna stated she enjoyed milking
cows, working in the
garden
and taking care of her younger brothers and sisters.
Donna
had lived in Shenandoah, Glenwood, and Malvern before coming to live at Taylor
Ridge Estates in
1984.
Donna enjoyed being helpful with kitchen and laundry chores, picking
strawberries, and especially
going
for ice cream.
Preceding
her in death was her step-mother, Ann. Left to mourn are her father, Wayne
Adams of Kellerton,
her
mother Thelma Adams of the Clearview Nursing Home in
Mt. Ayr, her brothers and sisters, Charlotte
Jennings,
Sharon Pitts, Linda Howard, Darrell Adams, Gerold Adams, Carroll Adams, and Phyllis Werden.
Several
nieces and nephews, her Uncle Wiley Webb of Taylor Ridge and her many friends
of Taylor Ridge
Estates
and the Lenox community.
Donna
passed away on September 10,1995 at the Taylor Ridge Estates after a lengthy
illness.
She
was laid to rest in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa with the Coen-Beatty Funeral in charge
of
the arrangements.

M. Alexander, 76, of LeMars,
Iowa, died Friday, June 30, 1995, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Funeral
services were Thursday, July 6 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. Interment was in the
West
Fairview Cemetery.
Rev.
Bob Shreve officiated the service. Bonnie Halligan served as organist. Pallbearers were Steve Roe, Alan Key,
Dave Ruden, Paul Lynam, Gary
Ellis, and Denny Koopman.
Grace
Mary Roe was born March 12, 1919, in rural Taylor County near Lenox, Iowa, to
Jesse and Mary
(Cipra) Roe. She graduated from Lenox High School in 1937.
She was united in marriage to Karmon Alexander
on
September 18, 1941, at Kansas City, Kansas.
During
WW II, Grace worked at the Fairfax Bomber Plant in Kansas City building B-25
bombers. She worked for
General
Electric in several positions retiring as a Payroll Accountant for the Kansas
City area after 39 years
of
service.
Grace
moved to LeMars in 1989 to be near her brother Gene
Roe and his family.
Survivors
include three sisters: Marjory Paton of Reinbeck, Iowa; Bonnie Ridgley and her
husband Herb of
Miami,
Florida; and Doris Key and her husband Reldon of
Lenox; a brother Dean Roe and his wife Lucy of Stuart,
Iowa;
a sister-in-law, Gini Roe of LeMars;
and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Karmon who died February 2, 1980; two brothers,
John
and Gene Roe; a brother-in-law, Alan Paton; and a sister-in-law, Millie Roe.
Arrangements

G. Bennison, daughter of Frederick William and Sara
(Bradbury) Bennison was born August 2, 1895 on
their
farm in Mercer Township, Adams County, Iowa and entered into rest July 2, 1995
at the Pella Community
Hospital,
Pella, Iowa at the age of 99 years and 11 months.
She
attended a country school near Lenox through 8th grade and graduated from Lenox
High School in 1914.
She
taught two years in country schools before going to Drake University where she
took a 2-year course in
Primary
Education, graduating in 1918. She spent 33 years teaching elementary students
in Lenox, Harlan,
Creston,
and Corning.
She
was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lenox.
Berta
cared for her parents until their deaths, and continued to live on the family
farm until she was 94 years
old.
She loved the farm life, her flowers, and the animals, both domestic and wild.
She could identify hundreds of
species
of birds and had an opinion about each of them. As a child, she enjoyed horses
and made pets of calves.
She
was a stilt-walker and an expert ice skater. Her special hobbies were poetry,
flower arranging and braiding
rugs.
Her collection of poems dated from the 1920's. She wrote poems for weddings,
anniversaries and other
special
events, but most of her poetry dealt with events and interests in her daily
life and frequently reflected her
love
of nature. She completed her own modern version of Mother Goose Rhymes just
this year. She braided over
1100
rugs that can be found in homes in many states.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, William Bennison,
and a sister, Bessie (Mrs. Ralph) Currie.
Berta
is survived by two nieces, Phyllis Graham of Pella, Iowa and Laurel Lee Dick of
Estes Park, Colorado,
and
a nephew, Robert Bennison of Scottsdale, Arizona.
Memorials
were established for the First Presbyterian Church of Lenox, Iowa.

Harland
Alexander Bubb, 61, of San Francisco, Calif.,
formerly of Lenox, died July 2, 1995, at the Fort
Miley VA Hospital in San Francisco.
Graveside
memorial services, were held at the Stringtown Cemetery at 10:30 Monday, July 9.
Harland Bubb was born January 29, 1934, at Lenox to Alonzo Bubb and Elsie Einfeldt Bubb. He graduated from
Lenox
High School in 1953, and attended college in California for one year.
He
is survived by two sons, Mike Douglas and David Douglas of California; two
sisters, Ima Jean Brayman of
Clarinda,
and Lola Bernard of Lafayette, Calif., two sisters-in-law, Bessie Bubb of Lenox, and Virginia Pickron of
Winterset.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and three brothers, one of
whom was the late Donald
(Doc) Bubb of Lenox.

Calkin, Homer L -
Homer
L. Calkin, 83, a historian who retired in 1977 as
deputy director of the research and reference division
of the
State Department's historian's office, died of a heart attack June 5 at his
home in Arlington. He had
lived
in the Washington area for about 55 years.
Dr. Calkin worked at the State Department for more than 37
years, preparing historical studies for the
archives.
He
was a native of Clearfield, Iowa, and a graduate of the University of Iowa,
where he also received a
master's
degree and a doctorate in British history. He served in the Army during World
War II.
Dr. Calkin was author of "Women in the Department of
State: Their Role in American Affairs" and "Castings From
the
Foundry Mold," a history of Foundry Methodist Church in Washington. He
also compiled catalogues of church
archives
and wrote for history journals and other publications.
He
was a member of the Cosmos Club, American Historical Association, Organization
of American Historians,
Southern
Historical Society, Society of American Archivists, World Methodist Historical
Society, Wesley
Historical
Society, and Historical Society of Baltimore Annual Conference. He was an
officer of the Lincoln Group
of
the District of Columbia, Foundry Methodist Church and the United Methodist
Historical Society.
His
first wife, Corrine Reynolds Calkin, died in 1969.
Survivors
include his wife of 24 years, Mary Katherine Ferriss Calkin of Arlington.

James
Willard Ferris was born September 3, 1916 in Talmadge,
Union County, Iowa. He was the son of
William
and Mary Reed Ferris. He departed this life August 10, 1995, in Clearview Nursing Home, Mt.
Ayr,
Iowa at the age of 78 years, 11 months, 7 days. He was one of four children.
Jim started school in Clearfield,
Iowa,
but grew up and attended school in the Des Moines area. In 1939 he went to Los
Angeles, Ca. and
attended
the Life Bible College where he received his Theology Degree.
In
1942 he was married to Lois Gillette of Sharpsburg, Iowa. To this union four
children were born, James,
David,
Elaine and Corrine. Lois preceded him in death in February 1965.
In
1944 Jim entered the United States Army, serving in World War n and the Korean
War. He retired from the
service
in 1959. He then entered the ministry full-time. He pastored Disciples of Christ churches in Blockton, Elliott
and
Rock Rapids, Iowa.
On
August 16, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Frances J. Hammers in Sioux
Falls, South Dakota.
Jim
was a member of the Christian Church, Lions Club, and American Legion, all of
Sheridan, Mo.; Masonic Lodge
of
Bedford, la.; Veterans of Foreign Wars of Grant City, Mo.; and Disabled
American Veterans.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lois, two sisters, Genevieve Ferris
and Evelyn Nizzi.
He
leaves to mourn his wife Frances of the home in Sheridan, Mo.; Two sons: James
and wife Rose Marie of
West
Des Moines, Ia.; David and wife Pat of Lenox, Iowa; two daughters: Elaine Brown
and husband Wyn of Kent,

Doyle
Richard Henry was born the son of Robert and Alice Webb Henry on the home farm
near Bedford, Iowa, on
May
6, 1913. He entered into rest at the Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in
Omaha, Neb., on July 29, 1995, at the
age
of 82 years 2 months and 23 days.
He
graduated from Bedford High School in 1932. He was united in marriage to
Phyllis Thompson on January
9,
1941, at the Methodist Parsonage in Maryville, Missouri. He farmed all of his
life in the Bedford area, was an
airplane
pilot and a member of the United Methodist Church in Bedford.
Surviving
to honor his memory are his loving wife, Phyllis Henry of Bedford; two sons,
David (wife Dorothy) of
Sturgis,
South Dakota, and Clifford (wife Jackie) of St. Louis, Missouri; two daughters,
Sharon (husband Larry)
Wiseman
of Bedford and Julia (husband Tim) Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister,
Arlene Tyner of Salt Lake City,
Utah;
two grandchildren Robert and Stephanie Henry; and one great grandchild, Seth
Henry.

him in death are his parents, a son Kenneth Henry on June 19, 1995, two sisters

Kerns, Dennis Ray -
Dennis
Ray Kerns, youngest son of Don Kerns and Marcella Kerns Scott, was born April
27, 1956, and entered
into
God's rest on July 22, 1995, at the age of 39.
Denny
spent his entire life the Clearfield area graduating from Clearfield High School
with the class of 1974.
He
attended Southwestern Community College in Creston for two years before
returning to Clearfield to farm.
On
July 24, 1976, Denny was united in marriage to Linda Van Winkle. To this union
was born three children,
Amy
Beth, Shane Ryan, and Rachel Lynn.
In
1978, Denny and Linda established Kerns Plumbing and Electric. Denny used his
many skills in electrical,
plumbing,
heating and air conditioning to serve others.
Denny
always had a smile and enjoyed serving others in any way possible. He enjoyed
working with his sheep,
cattle,
and horses. Denny was always involved in the activities of his children, and
was so proud of their
accomplishments.
Denny
was a member of the Clearfield United Methodist Church. He had accepted Christ
as his personal Saviour
and
his faith was the most important thing to him. He was also a member of the Clearfield Lions Club, the
Clearfield
Business Club, and several Heating and Cooling Organizations.
Denny
is survived by his wife, Linda, and their children Amy, Shane, and Rachel; his
mother Marcella and her
husband,
Leo Scott; his father Don and his wife, Vivian; two brothers, Steven and his
wife, Becky of Clearfield,
Kevin
and his wife, Deb of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Suzanne and her husband Kevin Finck of Rochester, Minn.;
three
nephews, Evan, Karl, and Matthew Kerns; one niece, Jennifer Kerns; two aunts,
Norma Black of Lenox and Pat
Koontz
of Martinsdale, Ia.; a grandfather, Harold Kerns of
Lenox; and a great-aunt Margaret Hurley of Des
Moines;
several cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were Wednesday, July 26 at the Clearfield United Methodist Church with
Pastor Al Rusk

She
was born and raised in Greeley, Nebraska and graduated from Greeley High School
in 1936.
She
was united in marriage with Paul T. Lynam on October
4, 1947 at the Saint John's Catholic Church in
Omaha,
Nebraska.
Monica
and Paul farmed together on the family farm in Adams county until Paul's death
in 1970. She was a
Nurses
Aid at the Lenox Care Center from 1973 to 1990.
She
was an active member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.
Surviving
to honor her memory are her two daughters; Eileen (husband Don) Keast of Lenox and Kay
(husband
Mike) Cheese of Lenox; one son: Paul "Tom" Lynam and his friend Jeanine Lanteri of Lenox; seven
grandchildren,
Paul Thomas Lynam III, Lisa and Kevin French, Brian
Cheese, Amy Lynam, Evan Lynam,
Melissa
Keast and Tamara Keast; two brothers, Gerald and Larry Curnyn of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Kathleen

Vern Maynes, 65, rural Lenox, was born April 28, 1930
to Joseph William and Jean Marie (Reed) in

NE. He died at University Hospitals in Iowa City on June 28,1995 following a
long illness.
At
the age of six his family moved to the Lenox area where he has since resided.
He attended rural school and
Lenox
High School, graduating in 1948. He was in the US Army for two years. Upon
returning from the service,
Harold
farmed in the Stringtown area until his health
failed. At that time he actively engaged in his real
estate
business. In his spare time Harold enjoyed tending to his apple orchard.
He
married Gwen Tully at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox on January 29,
1956. To this union, five
children
were born.
Harold
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox and Parkinson Post #250
of the
American
Legion.
Surviving
are his wife Gwen; his five children: Kim (husband Peter) Brantner of Prescott; Daren (husband
Steven)
Downing of Creston; Paul (wife Marcia) Maynes of
Lenox; Arnold (wife Melissa) Maynes of Creston;
and
Lyle (wife Bobbi) Maynes. of Prescott; 11
grandchildren; 1 brother: Paul (wife Eileen) Tyler of Des Moines;
Stepmother
Wilma Maynes of Lenox; parents-in-law Don and Minerva
Tully of Lenox; and many nieces,

He

Clifford Reldon Preston entered into rest July 15, 1995, at
his home in Lenox, Iowa.
Clifford
was born to William and Lennie Sturm Preston, on
December 11, 1918, at the family farm north of
Lenox.
He attended rural school and graduated from Lenox High School. He lived and
resided on the family farm
most
of his life except when he entered the US Army in 1942. He served in the
Pacific Theater and was discharged on
November
28, 1945.
He
was married to Elsie Ellen Walston at the Methodist
Parsonage in Lenox on March 10, 1948. Into this union two
sons
were born.
Clifford
farmed in the Lenox vicinity until his health failed. He was a Dekalb dealer for 35 years. He was also an
active
member in the ASC Office in Adams County for several years. He enjoyed his
family, grandchildren, and
friends
in his spare time.
Clifford
was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the
American Legion.
Surviving
are his wife, Elsie, his sons, Charles (wife, Mary), and Tom (wife, Rene) both
of Omaha, Nebr.; 4
grandchildren,
3 stepgrandchildren, and 3 sisters, Thelma Wenger of
Des Moines, Ia., Velda Wilson and
Dorothy
(husband, Marvin) Routh of Lenox, Ia.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
The Coen-Beaty Funeral Home was in charge of the services and

Johnny
Maxwell Reed was born to John C. F. Reed and Lenora Custer Reed August 2, 1912 in
Taylor County on a
farm
northwest of Clearfield, Iowa.
He
married Irene Lane, October 24, 1931 in Bethany, Missouri. To this union three
children were born. One son,
Marvin
and two daughters, Shirley and Sandra.
He
farmed all his life, until retirement in 1973, on a farm 4 and 3/4 miles
northeast of Lenox in Adams county.
After
the farm was sold and a move was made to Lenox, he worked part time as a
custodian in the Lenox School
System.
Johnny
was a member of the Methodist Church in Clearfield, but in later years
transferred his membership to
the
First Christian Church in Lenox, where he has served as a Deacon and Elder.
As a
result of a stroke in 1988 he became a resident of Clearview Home in Clearfield, where he resided until his
death.
He
is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters. Survivors
include his wife Irene of Lenox,
Iowa;
a son Marvin (wife Norma) of Lenox; two daughters, Shirley (husband Robert)
Aldrich of Des Moines and
Sandra
of Lenox; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen
Doss of Osceola.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa. Coen-Beaty Funeral Home was in charge of the
arrangements.

Phyllis
Irene Sevier was born in Union County to Max and Ruby Badgett on December 7, 1938 and entered into rest
at
the Iowa Methodist Medical Center on August 9, 1995 at the age of 57 years, 8
months, and 2 days.
She went
to Platte No. 1 school through 5th grade and then to Lenox High School. On May
12, 1963 she was united
in
marriage to Harley Jones, this union was blessed with the birth of 2 children,
Michael Anthony and Michelle Annette.
They
were divorced in 1973. She married Jack Sevier on April 17, 1977 and later
divorced.
She
worked in many nursing homes in the area and was the first meal site manager in
Creston for 3 years. She did
home
health care until her health wouldn't let her anymore. She always had time to
listen to anybody's problems
and
many young people called her Ma.
Surviving
to honor her memory is her father: Max (wife Gerry) Badgett of Lenox, her son Michael (friend Judy
Allen
and daughter Wendy Hoyt) Jones of Afton, a daughter Michelle Jones of Creston,
adoptive grandchildren:
Debbie
(Scott) Jeter of Creston and Brenda (Joel) Bird of Creston, 4 adoptive great
grandchildren: Drew Jeter
and Shandi, Shaylee and Jaydree Bird.
Preceding
her in death is her mother: Ruby Badgett.
Interment
was in the Morgan Cemetery in Kent, Iowa. Memorials to the Creston Meal Site.

was born on July 7, 1916 in the town of Lenox and was raised on a farm 3 miles
southeast of Lenox. She
was
the daughter of Bill and Delia Walter Walker.
She
attended Platte Center Country School, Lenox High School and Northwestern
Missouri State University in
Maryville,
Missouri.
She
was married to J. Ed Strough in Lenox, Iowa. They
moved to Los Angeles, California early in their
married
life, and their three daughters were born in that city.
Wilma
was the loving mother of Judy Morey, Dee Anne Butcher and Nancy Carnes, proud
grandmother of
nine
children and greatgrandmother of three children.
She
was mother-in-law of her foster son's wife, Lisa Glenn, sister of Mildred
Walker Cheese of Lenox, Iowa and
Henry
Walker of Greeley, Colorado.
She
left behind in Los Angeles a host of friends in her church, PEO Chapter, JOB
Daughters, DAK, and
Neighborhood.
She also has many friends in the Lenox community.
Funeral
services were held Saturday August 26th at 10:00 a.m. at La Crescents
Presbyterian Church in
Crescenta,
California. Committal was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills.
Memorials
in her memory were directed to the Presbyterian Church and to Hospice and Verdugo Hills
Nurses
Association who helped with her care in her home.
The
service was conducted by Rev. Dr. Steven Marsh and the PEO Chapter took part in
the service. Piano
prelude
to the ceremony was the Hymn "The Old Rugged Cross" which was a favorite
of her fathers. Two
anthems
were sung "Nearer My God to Thee" and The Lord's Prayer". The
postlude was "How Great Thou
Art".
The
eulogy was given by Bob Peterson, a former DeMalay and Masonic Master. Personnel testimonies were
given
by son-in-law Mike Carnes, speaking for the daughters and sons-in-laws, and by
Granddaughter Lisa
Carnes Stiglets, speaking for the grandchildren and great
grandchildren.
Wilma
was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, by two foster sons, Jim Glenn, and
John Glenn, and by her
Mother
and Father and her step-father Joe Pierce.

Funeral
services were held for C. Olen Veatch at the Fontanelle United Methodist Church in Fontanelle, Iowa,

Officiating
the services was The Rev. J. Larry Vallery.
Music
was by Patty Maeder, organist and Mrs. Mark Maeder, soloist.
Pallbearers
were Gene Held, Vernon Kading, August Gross, Jr.,
Dean Reeves, Leo Jacobson, and Hal Dean
Veatch.
Honorary Pallbearers were Lee Eddy, Lynn Eddy and Paul Griswold. Floral bearers
were Chuck and Julie
Williams.
Charles
Olen Veatch was born July 3, 1916 to Charles Arthur and Florence Dawes Veatch
in Orient, Iowa. He
passed
away September 23, 1995 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa at
the age of 79.
Olen
was united in marriage to Irene Toland July 15, 1954.
He was a quiet gentle man and never raised
his
voice and always was there when you needed him. He enjoyed farming and taking
care of his plants and
especially
loved his family. He liked to travel and visit with his family and friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence; his wife, Irene; a
sister, Viola; three brothers:
Estle,
Howard and Marion and a grandson, Jeffery.
He
is survived by his son, Harold Veatch and wife Penny of Fontanelle;
daughter, Charlene Cooper and husband
Garry
of Bella Vista, Arkansas; three granddaughters: Deena Gowdy and husband Tom of Johnston, Iowa, Angie
Lauer
and husband Dwight of Winterset and Katherine Nicole Veatch at home; one
grandson, Jason Veatch and
wife
Jackie of Indianola; six great grandchildren: Josh and Joey Gowdy,
Kyle and Amanda Lauer, and Travis and
Justina Veatch; sister Arda Brown and husband LaVern of Tempe, Arizona; brothers: Eugene Veatch and wife
Lucile
of LaMar, Colorado and Walter Veatch and wife Leona
of Prescott, Iowa; sister-in-law lone Veatch of
Creston;
friend Ruby Eddy of Bridgewater; other relatives and friends.
Interment
was in the Greenfield Cemetery at Greenfield, Iowa. The Steen Funeral Homes was
in charge of
arrangements.
