Curphy,
John Thomas -
John
Thomas Curphey, 92, oldest citizen of Onanga, Ill., died
at his home there Monday morning, March 30 at 11:15 o'clock.
He had
lived in the Lenox community from 1901 until 1915.
Mr. Curphey was ill several weeks previous to his death, but
until that time had enjoyed unusually good health for a man
of his years.
He was
born July 18, 1861, in Cleveland, Ohio. The Civil War
had been in progress only three months at that time. At the age
of 17 he left Cleveland and settled near Onarga, Ill.
There he
married Carrie Estel Barnum May 26, 1886. She died June 21,
1903.
A quotation from her obituary closely parallels his life:
"The
spirit of the pioneers was upon them; courageously they
journeyed westward and began their home life in a sod-house
on a homestead in the virgin prairies of Nebraska, near the town of Sargent. It was a happy but a lonely life, the neighbors
few and far distant, the nearest railroad 55 miles
away." Two of their five children
were born in Nebraska, many miles from doctors and medicine.
Mr. Curphey was intensely interested in caring for his
land. The last summer of his life he
went to Minnesota to supervise the harvest on land he owned there. The family returned to Onarga in 1893 and remained until 1901 when they moved to Lenox. They lived in this
community 14 years, going back to Onarga in 1915.
Mr. Curphey was the father of five children. Ross Edward of Lenox preceded him
in death. Surviving are Mrs. Elva Hahne, Robert Harold Cunphey,
Edith Estelle Hildenbrand and Grace Hawkins. Close
relatives in this community are a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Effie Curphey, a grandson Thurman Curphey and children, Allen, Sheryl, Sandra and Lloyd of Sharpsburg, a grandson Kenneth Curphey and
children,
Ross, Garland, Carol, Lyle and Johnny of Lenox.
The
deceased was a member of the Methodist church and of the
Odd
Fellows lodge. Funeral services were at Onarga with burial there.
