Beck,
Charles A. -
Charles
A. Beck, son of Johannes and Katharine Beck was born at Lenox, Iowa on November
11, 1896, and passed from this life July 19, 1957 age 60 years, 8 months and 8
days.
He
grew to manhood on a farm near Lenox. In
1918 he answered the call of his county to serve in the armed forces during
World War I. After his discharge he
returned to the farm where he lived with his family. In 1926 he moved to Lenox
with his mother, where he later became an employee of the Iowa Southern
Utilities Company.
On
June 24, 1936, he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Harden at the Little
Brown Church in the Vale. To this union
was born one son, Roger Charles.
In
June 1937, he and his wife moved to Clearfield, since he had been promoted to
local manager of Iowa Southern Utilities Co., which position he held until his
sudden death. He served his company
faithfully for nearly 30 years.
In
1915 he united with the Calvary Methodist Church, later transferring his
membership to the Clearfield Methodist Church. At the time of his death, he was serving as church treasurer. He was also a member of the Lions Club,
American Legion and Masonic Lodge; having served as Past Commander of Woodside
Post No. 97 and Past Master of Tremont Lodge No 343 at Lenox. He later
transferred his membership to Noble Lodge No 458 at Clearfield.
He
leaves to mourn his departure besides his devoted wife and loving son, two
brothers, Adolph and Henry of Lenox; two sisters, Rosa Baker of Clearfield and
Flora Rogers of Leon; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Leana Wurster, one brother, Will, and two brothers and two
sisters, who passed away in infancy.
Without
a doubt, his main purpose in life could be summed up with the scripture,
"I am my brother's keeper", as he was never too busy to help his
fellow man. All who loved and knew him, held him in highest esteem and he will
always be greatly missed.
Funeral
services were Sunday afternoon at the high school
gymnasium in Clearfield conducted by Rev Rowe of Grant, Iowa. Burial was in Fairview
Cemetery in Lenox.

Seeley
J. Beemer was born in Lee County, Illinois, Nov. 22, 1867, the son of Judson
and Esther Miller Beemer. He departed
this life at the Thomas Rest Home in Lenox, Iowa Friday morning Aug 2, 1957 at
the age of 89 years, 8 months and 10 days.
He
moved to Taylor County with his parents July 4, 1878. The located on a farm in Holt Township where he grew
to manhood.
He was
married Jan 15, 1889 in Bedford, Iowa, to Mary Crame who preceded him in death Dec 10, 1948. To this union four sons
were born, all of whom survive: Jay E of Sterling, Colo., George
E
and Judson J of Gravity, and Frank B of Pacific Junction, Iowa. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one brother, George
Beemer of Bedford and one sister Mrs Sienea Morrison of
Silverton,
Oregon.
Besides
his wife Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents
one brother, Sim, one sister Mrs Elsie Clark, also twin sisters
who died in infancy.
He
united with the Blue Grove Christian Church, later transferring his membership
to the Oak Hill church.
He was
a successful farmer enjoying his home and farming
operations until his illness. He will be greatly
missed by his relatives and a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral
services were Sunday afternoon Aug 4, at the Methodist
Church
in Gravity, the Rev Roland Windle officiating. Burial
was in the Gravity cemetery.

Brown,
George Lewis –
George
Lewis Brown, son of Andrew and Margaret Brown was born August 4, 1868 in
Jackson Township, Taylor County, Iowa and passed away at the Bedford Rest Home
in Bedford, Iowa July 15, 1957 at the age of 88 years 11 months, 11 days.
On
January 13, 1892 he was married to Hannah C. Morgan, who preceded him in death
October 29, 1941. To them were born
three children, Mrs. Mae M. Besco of Conway, Ilo M. Brown of Omaha, Nebr. and another infant daughter
who died October 10, 1903.
His
entire life was spent in Jackson and Jefferson townships, Taylor County, with
the exception of the last 15 years which he spent in Bedford.
He had
been a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Blockton and later transferred his membership to Bedford.
He is
survived by the daughter, the son and three grandchildren. A brother, Charles and a sister Mina preceded
him in death.
He had
been in failing health for some time and was bedfast for about a week before
his death.

Canny,
Katy Irvilla Goff –
Katy Irvilla Goff, daughter of John and Martha Goff was born
near Grant City, Mo., Oct 20, 1875 and passed away at the Municipal Hospital in
Clarinda Iowa, Aug 8, 1957 at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 19 days.
When
18 years of age she moved with her parents to the Clearfield community where
she lived on a farm south of town. She was united in marriage
to Daniel Canny April 21, 1897 and they lived together on the home farm for
forty-five years until his death in 1942 after which she moved to her home in
Clearfield where she lived the last 15 years of her life.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, one infant daughter
and a son Elmer who died by accidental drowning June 22, 1917.
She is
survived by two daughters. Mrs Lulu Parrish of
Bedford
and Mrs Lena Fitch of Clarinda; also her son-in-law Armon Fitch, three grandsons Donald, James and Joe Fitch
and two granddaughters Lois Fitch and Louise Parrish, two brothers Reade and
Harry Goff of Ottawa, Kansas as well as nieces, nephews and other relative and
friends.
She
became a member of the church early in life uniting with the Honey Grove church
near Grant City and transferring to the Clearfield Methodist church over 50
years ago.
Mrs Canny was loved and respected by those who knew her and while failing eye sight
had restricted her activities of late years, she kept a fine interest in the
church and other activities. She was a long time member of the American Legion
Auxiliary Relief Corps.
Final
services were held at the Clearfield Methodist church Sunday afternoon August
11, conducted by the pastor Rev Howard F Ball. Burial was in the Clearfield
Cemetery.

Mrs Alma Cox, 83, died at a Clarinda hospital Monday after
a long illness. Services were Wednesday at the Bender Funeral
home,
the Rev B C Collier officiating. Burial was at Emerson,
Iowa.
Mrs Cox was born at Chatham, Can., near Toronto, and came to the United States when
she was seven years old. She and her husband moved to Lenox about 25 years
ago. Her husband, Semon,
died
May 1,
1954. A son and a daughter also preceded her in death.
Surviving
are a daughter Mrs Glee Poindexter of Lenox, two
grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mrs Cox was a member of the MFC club, the Harmony Reading
Circle
and the Rebekah Lodge.

Mary Olive Taylor -
Mrs.
Olive Dunbar, 98, mother of the late Dick Dunbar of Lenox, died Friday morning
at the home of her daughter Mrs. Frank Thomas in Milwaukee, Wisc. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the
Bender Funeral Home, conducted by the Christian minister, Robert Duckett. Burial was
in the Lenox Cemetery.
Besides
the daughter, other survivors include a daughter-in-law Mrs. Dick Dunbar of
Lenox, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
The
deceased formerly lived here and was a charter member of the Church of Christ
and the MFC Club.
OBITUARY
Mary
Olive Dunbar, daughter of Lucy and Holland Taylor was born June 24, 1859 in
Appanoose County, Iowa, and departed this life July 17, 1957.
At the
age of fifteen she united with the Christian Church.
On December
13, 1883 she was united in marriage to James Milton
Dunbar.
They came to make their home in Lenox where Mr Dunbar
was in the clothing business. Later they became members of the Lenox Christian
Church.
To this
union were born four children, Clyde, Beulah, Birdie and Lloyd. Since her
husband's death in 1901 she has lived with her daughter Mrs R Frank Thomas of Milwaukee. This daughter is the only surviving member of the
family.

Harry
Jones, 72, farmer living 3½ miles southwest of Lenox, died Friday
evening at his home. He had returned home about a month ago after being a
patient in the University hospital at Iowa City.
Funeral
services were Monday at 9:30 a. m. at St Patrick's church with Father Adam Reisz officiating. Rosary was Sunday at 8 p. m. at the
Jones residence. Burial was in Calvary cemetery at Corning.
Harry Reece
Jones, son of Daniel R and Margaret Jones, was born August 5, 1885 at Corning,
Iowa, where he lived until his marriage to Annie O'Connell, February 14, 1911.
They moved to a farm southwest of Lenox where he lived until his death, Sept
13, 1957, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 9 days.
He is
survived by his wife, Annie, one son, Arthur H, at home;
two
daughters, M Margaret of Des Moines and Mildred L Chadwick of Atlantic, also
one brother Walter E. of Corning. One
daughter, Frances A, preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1944. Besides his daughter, he was preceded in
death by his father, mother and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Schaffer and Mrs. Harry Stottlemeyer.
Funeral
services were at St Patrick's Church on Sept 16, 1957 at 9:30 a. m. Burial at
Calvary Cemetery at Corning.

(Babe) Lange, 42, of Rockwell City, la., passed away
Thursday morning 10:30 a. m at Iowa City Hospital where he had surgery on his
heart. He is survived by his wife, LaVon, and three
children, Larry, who is stationed in Germany, Deananne and Richard at home; his parents, Mr and Mrs A Lange and two brothers all of Rockwell
City. Funeral services were held Monday at St Paul Lutheran Church and burial to
Rockwell City cemetery.
Mr Lange was the son-in-law of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Kirby
who formerly lived in Lenox.

McFee, Margaret –
Mrs.
Margaret McFee, 94 years of age, died Saturday
morning here at the home of her son, Lewis McFee. Funeral services were Monday at the Bender
Funeral Home, the Rev. James Eddy, officiating. Burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Creston.
Mrs McFee had made her home with her son and his wife
since September 1946, except for one year with her son George in Chappell,
Nebr. She has been an invalid since she
broke her hip four years ago. She also suffered
a broken limb three years ago. During
that time she was cheerful and patient.
Margaret McFee, daughter of George Tully and Jane Fowler, was
born in Peterborough, Canada July 15, 1863. She passed away Sept. 7, 1957 at the age of 94 years one month, 23 days.
She
moved with her parents to the United States in 1879. They lived on a farm northeast of Lenox. On March 11, 1886 she was married to John A McFee who passed away Feb. 27, 1932.
They
were parents of three children, George A of Chappell, Nebr. Etta Blanche who
died in infancy and Lewis W. of Lenox. Besides the two sons she leaves to mourn her loss the daughters-in-law,
eight grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Duncan McFee,
Winnipeg, Can. And Mrs. Geo McFee,
Creston, and a host of other relatives.
After
their marriage, Mr and Mrs McFee moved to Hand County, S. Dak. Where they resided four years. Then they returned to a farm near Lenox where
they lived until they moved to Creston in 1915.
Mrs McFee joined the Presbyterian Church when she came
from Canada and has been affiliated with other Presbyterian churches where she
lived.

Mrs Mary McPherrin, 92, aunt of Don Tyler, died at her
home in Des Moines Thursday night. She was a member of the DAR, a former
treasurer of the Des Moines Women's Club and a member of the Central
Presbyterian Church there. She has visited in Lenox many times. Mr and Mrs Don Tyler were in Des
Moines to attend the funeral.

Olepha Eleanor Cree. daughter of Robert E and Mary
Piper Cree, was born April 27, 1868 at Alpha, Illinois and died at her home August.4, 1957 at the age of 89 years, 3
months and 8 days.
When
she was a small child, she moved with her parents to Page County, locating
north and west of Clarinda, where she grew to womanhood.
She
was united in marriage to William Henry Pfander on
August 25, 1887 at Mt Etna.
Had
she lived until Aug 25 they would have been married 70 years To this union 8 children were born. In 1903 she moved to Taylor county,
locating 2½ miles west of Sharpsburg, where she lived the remainder of her
life.
She
was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg
She
was active in church work, attended faithfully while health permitted.
She
was preceded in death by two daughters Rella Ann and Hattie
Vena, one sister Anna Kirby, one brother Daniel Cree.
She
leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, three sons, Ira D of Creston, Cloyd W of Gravity and Burl J of Corning; three daughters
Grace E Strong of Bedford, Eula Myrtle Hartshorn of Exline, and Zenith L Wilcoxson of
Kansas City, Kan. 27 grandchildren. 54 great grandchildren, 7
great great grandchildren, and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were Aug 6 at the Presbyterian Church In
Sharpsburg and burial in the Gravity Cemetery.

Margaret Schmitt –
Mrs Margaret Schaub died Monday at 3:35 pm at St. Bernard’s Hospital at
Council Bluffs. She had lived in Lenox most
of her life, but had been in the hospital since she fractured a hip about a
year and a half ago. Mrs. Schaub was 98 years old Apr. 7.
Funeral
services were this morning (Thursday) at St. Patrick’s Church, the Rev. Fr. Reisz officiating. Burial was in Lenox Cemetery.
Survivors
include five daughters and three sons. Those from this area are Mrs Amelia Lynam and Frank S of Corning and Sister Ambrose of St.
Bernard Hospital, Council Bluffs. Relatives here are a nephew Tony Schmitt, a great nephew and nieces,
Walter Stapleton and Mrs. Howard Sprague.

Margaret Schmitt –
Margaret
Schmitt, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Schmitt, was
born April 7, 1859 in Illinois and was married to Peter Schaub in
Kickapoo,
Ill., in 1880. Her husband and two children preceded
her in death, Mr Schaub on May
26 1928, Lavina of Red Oak in
1934
and John of Corning in 1947.
Mrs Schaub had lived most of her life in Lenox and was a
member of St Patrick's church. She had spent a number of winters with two
daughters in and near Bed Oak until she broke her hip. She then went to St
Bernard's Hospital in Council Bluffs where she lived until she departed from
this life Monday, Aug. 19.
Mrs Schaub was a kind and loving mother and will be
missed by many as she was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Her
body was brought to the Bender Funeral Home Thursday
morning where it lay in state for two hours before the services
at 10:00 at St Patrick's church Father Adam Reisz officiated.
Burial
was in the St Patrick's cemetery.
Mrs Schaub leaves to mourn her passing 8 children, all
present
at her
funeral, 3 sons and 5 daughters: Frank of Corning; Sister Mary Ambrose

Mrs Lee Smith, 73, died Saturday night at a rest home in Idaho Falls, Idaho, after
an extended illness. The body arrived at Creston Thursday morning at 6:40 and
will be brought to the Bender Funeral Home.
Funeral
services will be Friday at 2 pm at the Bender Funeral Home. Burial will be in
the Clearfield cemetery.
Mrs Smith and her husband lived on a farm between Clearfield
and Lenox in earlier days, later moving to Lenox, and lived here until moving to
Idaho. She was a cousin of Lloyd Wood.
Survivors:
1 son, Claude, and 1 daughter, Mrs Wanda Pritchard,
both of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 4 other daughters, Virginia, Mabel,
Marjorie,
Gwen Lee and a number of grandchildren. Her
husband and 1 daughter preceded her in death.

"Mike" Spring, 78, died at 4:15 p, m. Tuesday at his home here.
Funeral
services will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Mt Zion Church with

Survivors
include his wife, Jessie, one daughter, Mrs Lowell Wilson,
three grandchildren and three brothers. The body is at the Bender Funeral Home.

Michael Peter “Mike” –
Michael
Peter Spring, son of Arnold and Mattie Spring was born January 2, 1879 at Rutigen, Switzerland, which is near Berne, Switzerland.
He
came to the United States with his parents in July, 1883, and settled near
Brooks, Iowa, where most of his life was spent.
On
March 6, 1907 he was united in marriage with Montie McCleland. To this union one daughter Margaret, was born.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Montie,
his father, mother, and two. brothers, Arnold, and
Michael, an infant.
On
January 19, 1915 he was married to Jessie McClelland, and they lived on a farm
in the Mt. Zion Community until November 1954, when they moved to Lenox. He passed away at is home in Lenox, August 6,
1957 at the age of 78 years, 7 months, 4 days.
Surviving are his wife Jessie of the home, his daughter Margaret
Wilson
of Lenox; three brothers, John of Villisca, Jake of Brooks, and William of
Corning; one sister, Mattie Opitz of Herrington,
Kansas; one son-in-law, Lowell Wilson of Lenox, three grandchildren, Barbara Osleckie of Des Moines and Leland and Lorraine Wilson of
Lenox,
He will be greatly missed by his family and his many many friends.

Travis, Mertin –
Mertin Travis, 23, was killed about 1 am Tuesday in a one car accident five miles
north of Gravity. The accident occurred
at a T-intersection of a gravel road with highway 148.
Mrs. Travis,
17, was also in the car, but was not seriously hurt. The car crossed the intersection and rolled
down a steep embankment.
Survivors
besides his wife are his parents, Mr and Mrs Gilbert Travis, two brothers, Marlin and LaVerne, and a sister Mary Ellen all of Sharpsburg.
Funeral
services are to be at Corning Friday afternoon with burial at Stringtown Cemetery.

Blaine
Willits. son of Levi F and Marie S Willits,
was born on a farm 3 miles northeast of Lenox Nov 28, 1885. Later he moved with
his parents to a farm just south of Lenox and grew to manhood in this community.
He was
a graduate or the Lenox high school. He
has been living in Minnesota for a good many years and wasn't sick very long
before
he passed away. His body was brought back to Lenox and buried
in the Willits family lot in the west cemetery. A short religious
service at the graveside was performed by the Rev B C Collier of the local Methodist
Church.
