Bedford Times-Press Thursday March 9, 1944 [p.8] Don Hoover, 75, Dies in Illinois Don Hoover, 76, a former resident of the Bedford community, died Tuesday at his home in Quincy, Illinois. He is one of a family of eight children, five sisters and a brother preceding him in death. Mr. Hoover was married on March 27, 1895 to Myrtle L. Forgy, at Longmont, Colorado. Mrs. Hoover survives. Also one sister, Mrs. Zelda Streeter of Lompoc, California. He also has several other relatives in Bedford and community. |

[John Alvin Denton] Bedford Times-Press Thursday April 5, 1945 [p. 1] J.A. Denton Dies At Jackson Twp. Home J. A. Denton, prominent farmer of the Forest Grove community, died at his home in Jackson Township Saturday, March 31. The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson. The body was placed in the mausoleum in the Fairview cemetery. John Alvin Denton, son of James and Georgia Ann [Johnson] Denton, was born in Greenview, Illinois, October 5, 1866, being aged 78 years, 5 months and 26 days at the time of his death. On November 21, 1888, he was married to Adeline Goble. To them was born one son, Carl. His wife died April 2, 1893. On September 18, 1895 he was married to Estella Hoover and they have resided in this community since. They reared one daughter, Esther Golding, from the age of four and loved her as their own. He was a kind and loving husband, good and thoughtful neighbor, and will be missed by all of his friends. He is survived by his wife, one son and foster daughter. |

[Leon Wood] Bedford Times-Press June 14, 1945 Leon Wood Ashes Buried Here June 1 The ashes of Leon Wood, a former resident of Bedford, were buried in the Bedford Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Wood was born February 8, 1872 at Pickering, Missouri and died at his home in Los Angeles on March 14, 1945. The family came to Bedford when he was a small boy and he grew to manhood here. After his marriage to Blanche Thompson they moved to Oakland, Iowa. Mr. Wood's work was secretarial, newspaper and literary. He was a student all his life, interested in various lines of research. Many of his best years were given to secretarial work in university and church offices. He was always a friend and counselor to young men and during his last years did valued service as coach to U.S.C. [University of Southern California] Tennis Teams. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche Wood; three sisters, Mrs. Daisy Van Sant of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Mrs. Nettie Jenkins of Omaha, and Mrs. Ella Sanford of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; and one brother, O. The funeral services will be held at the Shum Funeral Home at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery [Bedford]. |

[Ella Aiton Meikle] Bedford Times-Press Thursday September 12, 1946 p. 1 Mrs. Meikle Succumbs After a Long Illness Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Meikle, who died Wednesday, September 4, were held at the Shum Funeral Home at 10 o'clock Saturday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean. He was assisted by Rev. Wayne Nickel of Brooklyn, New York, a grandson of the deceased. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery [Bedford]. Ella Maria Aiton was born in Rio, Wisconsin, January 25, 1855, being aged 91 years, 7 months and 9 days at the time of her death. She was the eldest daughter of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. William Aiton. She moved to Taylor County with her parents in 1869. She was married to William Meikle, April 17, 1873. To them were born three sons: John Meikle, Roy Meikle and William T. Meikle and one daughter, Agnes Meikle Goodspeed, who died September 28, 1925. Mr. Meikle died May 23, 1926. Four sisters and two brothers also survive: Mrs. Emily Mason of Miami, Florida, Mrs. C.O. James Aiton of Bedford, Mrs. Dresher, Mrs. H. Kirk Hall [Mary Alice] and Grace Clayton of Omaha, and Arch Aiton of Shenandoah. There are 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Two sisters, Agnes Hunt and Jessie Aiton, an infant, preceded her in death. Mrs. Meikle lived on a farm west of Bedford after her marriage, where she was active in community life and the work of the Morning Star Presbyterian Church. When the family moved to Bedford, Mrs. Meikle transferred her membership to the Bedford Presbyterian Church where she was a faithful member and maintained an active interest in the kingdom affairs. Mrs. Meikle's life was a long and useful one, marked by a cheerful disposition, which won the love and respect of all. |

The funeral services were held at the Wetmore Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Gordon F. MacLean. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery [Bedford]. Bessie L. Kemery was born in Taylor County, Iowa, July 8, 1880, being aged 66 years, 3 months and 15 days at the time of her death. On March 16, 1904, she was married to Edwin C. [ummings] McCormick. To them were born three children, two of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, one son, Leighton McCormick and family of Columbia, Mo., two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Clyde Russell, Mrs. Frank Trumbo [Ruby], Mont Kemery, Laye Kemery and Lynn Kemery. |

Bedford Times-Press Thursday June 17, 1948 [p. 1] Frank Amrine Dies At Blockton Frank S. [tephen] Amrine, a farmer and stockman of Taylor County for many years, died at his home south of Blockton Sunday, June 13. The funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Blockton Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Donald Smith of the Clearfield Christian Church. Burial was in the Forest Grove cemetery. Frank S. Amrine, son of Stephen and Mary Amrine, was born July 23, 1871 in Neosha County, Kansas, being aged 76 years, 10 months and 20 days at the time of his death. When he was still a small boy the family moved to Cass County, Iowa, remaining there for a time and later settling in Taylor County. In 1904 he was married to Osta A. Kemery of Bedford. They lived near Bedford for many years, later moving to Blockton. In 1928 they moved to Howell, Missouri, near Hocomo, where he spent the last several years of his life. There were six children born to them, two dying in infancy. The others are Archie A. of Kansas City, Kans., Stephen of Blockton, Delbert A. of Ojai, Calif., and Ula L. of Cornell, Calif. There are eight grandchildren. He also leaves three brothers, Will of Santa Ana, Calif., Burt and Emory of Fort Morgan, Colorado, and one sister, Laura Stoops of Colorado. |
