Leonard farmed and raised purebred Chester White hogs, until he served on the naval aircraft carrier, The Bunker Hill, in World War II.

After the war he and his brother Howard formed a partnership, Morris Brothers Implement. They had a John Deere dealership and construction company in Corning. Jeri moved to Iowa in 1979 to start a new life. After her move, she was married to Richard Moore and this marriage was blessed with two daughters, Mindi and Randi. They were later divorced.

After Jeri moved to Iowa, she became the Taylor County 4-H Program Assistant. She spent many years enjoying the youth of Taylor County. She learned as much from the kids she worked with as they did from her!

After a debilitating illness in the late 1990’s she became disabled. Instead of letting this get her down, she decided to make lemonade out of lemons. She became an advocate for the disabled by becoming a Certified Benefits Planner and Outreach Specialist. She worked with hundreds of disabled persons across the state of Iowa to reach their own dreams of succeeding in business. If anyone needed a cheerleader or a pat on the back while striving for success on their own, Jeri was always there for them. This included flying to Washington D.C. to testify in front of Congress on the qualities of disabled business owners. She served on several national and state level committees concerning the rights of the disabled. All of this was done while she was severely disabled herself!

Jeri was a true lover of animals, especially dogs. She loved to go to dog shows. She, Mindi and Randi became very involved with showing dogs on the national level. One of her favorite shows was Westminster Kennel Club in New York City. She beamed with pride when her daughter Randi and her granddaughter Amanda qualified to show there. She took great pleasure in taking her daughters and grandchildren with her to Westminster to enjoy the sights of the Big Apple.

Black & Tan Coonhounds were her true love. She did as much as she could to promote the breed, including being an officer in the American Black & Tan Coonhound Club. While holding this national office, she gained many close and dear friends.

Besides friends, clients and co-conspirators in troublemaking, Jeri’s survivors include her children: Keri Sheffield and husband Jeff (she always called him her favorite son-in-law just because he was her only son-in-law!), Bedford, IA; Traci Mitchell, Phelan, CA; Mindi Moore and Randi Moore, Gravity, IA.

Grandchildren: Thomas Mitchell, Phelan, CA; Shelby (Sheffield) and husband Cody Money, Bedford, IA; Amanda Mitchell, El Paso, TX; Chance Sheffield, Hadley Sheffield and Gentry Sheffield, Bedford, IA.

And the apple of her eye, even though she always declared she didn’t feel old enough to be a great-grandma, Dallyn LeRoy Money, Bedford, IA.

Jeri will be missed by her entire family and the memories that were made by Jeri throughout the years, will remain in our hearts forever.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Mohler, Monica Leona Cullen - Funeral Services for Monica Mohler, age 82 of Bedford who died Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center were held Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford. Interment was held in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Monica Leona Cullen Mohler was born September 3, 1923, south of Massena, Edna Township, Cass County, Iowa, in the same farm home as her father. She was the oldest daughter of Peter Francis Cullen and Leona Morrison Ware Cullen. Monica started country school in rural Cass County, Edna No. 6 and also attended Ottumwa Heights School in Ottumwa. In December of 1938, she moved with her family to the Wray Farm six miles south of Lenox which her father had purchased in 1935. She and her sister, Seraphia attended Lenox High School, where Monica graduated with the Class of 1941. She received her teaching certificate on September 9, 1941. Her first teaching job was Lincoln No. 1 School in Creston in April of 1942. During the summers, if not attending summer school, she worked for Mayme and Dick O’Grady of Conway until 1946. She taught at several schools including Zion Consolidated; Orient; Platte Township School No. 1; Kent; Washington No. 1 (Spread Eagle) and Clayton Township Hess No. 3. While teaching at the Hess school, she met her future husband Charles Mohler. The couple were united in marriage on May 15, 1948 in Hiawatha, Kansas. Together they built a small home for themselves in Clayton Township on his land, moving in shortly after they were married. Monica continued to teach for one more year at the Hess School. She truly enjoyed helping Charles on the farm throughout their married life. She also helped with the dairy herd they had jointly with his father until 1954, when they quit the dairy business. Many times she would come home from working the morning shift at the local restaurant to find a tractor ready and waiting for her.

On June 16, 1950, their daughter Mary Margaret was born to bless their lives. She attended her first year of school at the Hess School where Monica had taught. Monica started working at the Skylark Café in 1954 for Bob Cobb and continued to work there until 1967 through several different owners. She worked for one summer for Luella Straight at the Frosty Trete, really enjoying that job! She then went to work for Rilda Miller at the Hi-Way Café until 1974, when she started a job for Matura as a driver. When Charles became ill in 1978, she stopped working outside the farm and stayed home to lovingly care for him.

Monica always had a big garden, canning, freezing and preserving the produce. She was known for sharing her abundance with others. She enjoyed being outside and told about the young quail coming to sit on the fence posts and she and they would sing to each other as she worked in the garden. In 1989, she decided it was time to move into town, but not slow down. She continued to do all kinds of crafts, decorating cakes, knitting, crocheting, quilting and making gifts were just a few of the things she enjoyed. Her candy, fruit cake and goodie platters were always one of the highlights for the many delighted recipients during the holidays. Monica also kept busy with volunteer work, going to Mercer Center Church to quilt on a regular basis. Embroidering lovely pillow cases and making other items as well as helping with the Bazaar. She later started quilting and helping at the Bedford Meal Site.

In May of 2003, Monica received a Shining Star Award at the Iowa Governor’s Conference on Aging. This award was given to those individuals that go above and beyond to creatively solve a problem or bring a service to those in need. It honors the hard work, dedication, outstanding efforts and achievements of those who help Iowa’s older adult population.

Monica would be one of the first to arrive with food or help in times of need for family or friends. Watching out for her neighbors and sharing meals with them was not uncommon. Monica lived to travel, visiting many mainland states including Alaska, Hawaii and a cruise to the Caribbean with her friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards and doing word search puzzles, anything to keep her hands and mind busy.

The annual Lenox Alumni Banquet was always a highlight for her as she enjoyed her classmates and was involved in the planning and carrying out of the event. This year was her 65th Class Reunion. She was a member of the Victory Club, B.P.W., helped with activities for the Chamber Main Street in Bedford and was known for her custard pies at Bingo. Monica attended the United Christian Presbyterian Church and was active in events there. Always ready to help others, often putting their needs above her own is how family and close friends describe Monica. Two of her pet-peeves were ….. People who thought they knew all about something …. But actually knew nothing about it at all! And people who couldn’t do their job. Monica was an outspoken lady, firm in her beliefs, yet there was much gentleness in her actions. Her wit and sense of humor could catch you off guard and keep you smiling ….. Even into her final days.

Left to cherish Monica’s memory are a half sister Mildred Ware Watts of Purcellville, Virginia; sister-in-law Pat Mohler of Gladstone, Missouri; along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Preceding Monica in death were her father Pete on June 15, 1962; mother Leona on July 14, 1971; an infant sister Marian Lucille; daughter Mary Margaret Mohler on January 17, 1980; husband Charles W. Miller, Marvin James - Funeral services for Marvin Miller, age 53, of Lenox, who died Friday, May 23, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Visitation will be Tuesday at the Ritchie Funeral Home from 3 to 7 with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7. Interment will be held at the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Marvin James Miller was born August 5, 1954, in Corning, Iowa. He was the first of two children born to Benne and Gerda Miller. Marvin graduated from the Lenox High School in 1972. He began farming with his father Benne in 1973 when he bought his Grandparent’s farm. Marvin married Karla Figgins in 1973 and they had two daughters, Brandie Miller and Suzanne Sulzer. He was very proud of his two daughters. Then in 1983 Marvin met the love of his life Georgia Collins and on November 10th, 1984 they were married. Marvin and Georgia owned and operated a Farm west of Lenox.

Farming and livestock kept Marvin very busy and he enjoyed the many challenges that come with the business. His livestock were more that just animals to him and he treated many of them like pets, particularly his favorite White Park. Though farming was his life, Marvin had many other interests. He had a hidden passion for science and astronomy. He spent countless hours looking at the moon, stars and planets with his telescope and even conducted a study on sun spots. Many hours were spent outside in the garden with his wife Georgia tending and watching over his favorite flowers and vegetables. He loved spending time doing detailed restoration work on his collections of guns, toy farm machinery, and his classic cars. There was a lot of pride when he restored his Grandfather’s Minneapolis Moline tractor. Everyone could see his enthusiasm when he shared them at local shows and parades for all to enjoy. He especially loved his 1964 Ford Galaxy 500. He purchased it as a senior in high school and has been showing is ever since.

He was a very spontaneous person and loved doing things spur of the moment. He enjoyed taking short trips to explore Iowa and other states near by. Many times he would take the long way home just see new things. Often he would stop to observe others crops or check on his own. He loved fireworks, working with his father on his farm, and making trips to Muscatine and selling the melons from their flatbed. Marvin looked at all of God’s creation with awe and wonder, and had a zeal for all things new. If it was new he had to try it, especially when it came to food. He was a life long learner and always enjoyed reading about something new and shared his knowledge with others.

He loved to ‘conversate’ with anyone and everyone. He spent many hours solving the problems of the world over a cup of coffee. He loved being with his friends and we know he is already missed.

He was very proud of his German heritage. He took the time to visit and get to know his German relatives by going to Germany and Austria and always made it a point to stay in touch with all of his many relatives. He has left a part of himself with all of them. Marvin will be remembered and thought of by many.

Throughout his life he had met many health challenges, but he endured through them all with a positive outlook. He was never resentful about the things he had to endure, he was only grateful for the longer lease on life that he was granted.

Left to cherish Marvin’s memory are his wife Georgia of Lenox, IA; daughter Brandie Miller of Des Moines, IA; daughter Suzanne Sulzer and husband Bryan of Dubuque, IA; sister Shirley Miller and husband Jeff of Hastings, IA; Aunts: Josephine Schomberg of Villisca, IA, Ilse Stultz and husband Werner of Untergruppenbach, Germany; Rose-Marie Kauder of Rauis, Austria; father and mother-in-law Richard and Kathleen Collins of Hopkins, MO; brother-in-law Jim Collins and wife Carolyn of Bedford, IA; Sister-in-Laws: Carmen Larabee of Maryville, MO; Joan Hemenway and husband Martin of Rogers, AR; Carol Hersh and husband Allen of Conception Junction, MO; cousins: Jim Schomburg of Villisca, Iowa; Marjory Bradford and husband Phillip of Traskwood, AR; Gudrun and husband Jürgen Lindörfer; Brigitte and husband Wolfgang Megerle; Dirk Kauder all of Germany; nephews and nieces: Jeremiah Larabee and wife Julie; Jedidiah Larabee and wife Valerie; Cody and Jacklyn Hersh; Collin and Jullian Hemenway; Jason and Jordan Miller and many other family members and friends.

Meier, Elizabeth "Betty" Patricia Wagner - Mass of Christian Burial for Betty Meier, age 68, of Lenox who passed away Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa were held Monday, March 3, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lenox. Interment was held at the East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Elizabeth (Betty) Patricia Meier was the only child of Benjamin Wagner and Jarvis (Cruckshank) Wagner of St. Louis, Missouri. She was married to Joseph H. Meier in 1957. They relocated to Lenox, Iowa from St. Louis, to be near Joe’s closest sister Goldie Stapleton and husband Walter. Betty and Joe enjoyed a new start in Lenox. She left the city to find arms open and a wonderful welcome in this new community. This place provided beautiful scenery, and she cherished the welcome to her and her family.

During the years, her life was very full in Lenox. Betty and Joe were raising their four children. They enjoyed all the celebrations of parenting and were proud of their accomplishments. Betty was always a devoted mother and became an awesome grandmother. Her employment in Lenox was for a brief time at the Lenox School System before she began her career of 26 years as a certified med. aide. Betty gave excellent nursing care to the residents as she loved each one of them. Many times she would bring someone home to share in our family holiday.

Her faith in God guided her life. She often reminded us that life is too short and that conflict only shortens it more. Her personal relationship with Jesus was expressed through her life culminating in her Baptism and Confirmation into the Catholic Church. She enjoyed performances by grandchildren, daughter, and herself as she frequently sang “God Bless America” at events. She loved travel trips to Arizona, Las Vegas, East Coast and the breath taking view from the top of the Empire State Building. She enjoyed growing roses, caring for her home, collecting favorite items, playing cards, cooking, picnics, and time with her dog, Rocky. She loved and enjoyed friends, especially her neighbor Sandra. She had admiration and appreciation for the medical staff and all care givers who gently and lovingly cared for her.

Her life is celebrated by her four children, daughter Cathy (Meier) and Dan Bagley of Nevada, Iowa; sons, Joseph of Lenox, Iowa; Walter of Arizona; Ben and Cheryl Meier, Lincoln, Nebraska; Her grandchildren Heather and Danny Bagley, Jennie Meier, Kevin Royalty, Tyler and Brycin Miller.

Proceeding Betty in death are her parents Benjamin and Jarvis, husband Joe, companion Wayne McDonald, many aunts and uncles, cousin, in-laws and very dear friends.

She will be missed, her memory will live on and her presence will fill our hearts forever.
