Russell William Pierce, 79, died Friday June 18th of complications due to cancer. Russell was born November 20th, 1924 in Bedford, IA. He was the son of Howard and Bernice (Russell) Pierce. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Naval Reserve for 17 years and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Des Moines for 31 years, retiring in 1979 as a superintendent. Russell is survived by his wife Thelma (Moore) Pierce of Des Moines, his children Trudy McDuffey of Des Moines and Craig Pierce of Longview, WA. Three grandchildren, Tracie McDuffey and Travis Williamson both of Des Moines and Jacob Pierce of Longview, WA. Three sisters, Wanda Lovitt of Bedford, IA., Donna Dowlin (Robert) of Austin, TX. and Shirley Anson of Council Bluffs, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Hal Pierce of Clearfield, IA. and Jack Pierce of Bedford, IA. Russell's remains will be cremated and per his request no services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to Taylor Hospice House.
