Julia Ann "Chase" Spencer

Aged Mother Dies After Brief Illness

Mrs. Julia Ann Spencer, widow of the late Emory B. Spencer, passed away at an early hour on Thursday morning, Dec. 12, 1940, after an illness of less than two days. She had been gradually failing in health for several years, although she had been able to be up and around her home.

Mrs. Spencer was born near Tama Iowa, May 11, 1858, and was 82 years 7 months and 1 day old at the time of her death.

She grew to womanhood at her home near Tama, and on Sept. 30, 1880, was united in marriage to Emory B. Spencer. To this union were born four sons, Loren, Louis, Rex and Howard and one daughter, Winnie now Mrs. W. C. Krog.

In 1885 the family moved to Nebraska locating on a homestead, east of Wallace, where they lived until in 1905 when they moved to Wallace where she had since made her home Mr. Spencer passed away Jan. 31, 1935.

She was a life time member of the Congrogational (sic) church, and a charter member of the Wallace chapter of the Eastern Star.

She was a most highly beloved woman, and her whole life seemed devoted to her family, all of her children surviving her.

Funeral services were held at the community Hall on Sunday afternoon with the Wallace Funeral Home in charge, Rev. H. Gordon Barky of the Wallace Methodist church officiating.

A male quartet, Dale Adams, Rev. Birky, Walker and Harry Rowe, with Mrs. Carrie Cowles at the piano, sang two numbers, “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and “Abide With Me”. Mrs. F. H. Whitlake sang a solo, “It is His Will”, with Mrs. Cowles, at the piano. Pall bearers were Harry Rees, Ralph E Cowls, W. J. Cohen, Park Hecht, J. H. Howe and W. S. Wood interment was in Morning View cemetery beside her husband.

The display of floral offerings is said to have been one of the finest ever shown in Wallace, and indicated the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew her.
