E. B. Spencer Called

Shortly before 8 o’clock Thursday morning, Jan. 31, E. B. Spencer, who has been failing in health for several years, passed away at his home in Wallace.

Emory Burton Spencer was born at Madison, New York, Feb. 7, 1857, at the age of eight he moved to Tama, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, and on Sept. 30, 1880, he was married to Julia Chase. In 1885 they moved to Nebraska in two covered wagons, crossing the Missouri river on a ferry and took a homestead near the present location of Wallace. The nearest town at that time was North Platte. He built and lived in a sod house for several years. In 1901 he moved to a ranch east of Wallace, where he lived four years, moving to Wallace in 1905. Being a pioneer E. B. Spencer’s life was closely woven into the history of Wallace. His chief interest was in the lumber business, which he was still connected at the time of his death. At one time he was also associated with E. R. Ferrell in the general merchandise business.

He was a member of the Congregational church, the Masonic lodge and the Modern Woodmen of America.

Surviving him are his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Krog, or Wichita Falls, Texas; four sons, Rex, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Louis of Berkeley, California; Loren and Howard of Wallace; one brother, Ellis Spencer, of Detroit, Michigan; seven grand children and two great grand children. Present also at the funeral was one nephew, Ralph E. Jones of North Platte.

Funeral services were held at the Community Hall, Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. V. Frey, and in charge of C. E. Johnston; the pall bearers being Chas L. Cooper, Jas. H. Howe, Harry Rees, W. P. Killen, Fred Swanson and F. H. Whitlake. Interment was made in Morning View cemetery, services at the cemetery being conducted by the Masonic lodge.
