Guenther, Henry -

Henry Guenther died last Sunday morning at 4:30, at the ripe age of 77 years. He was one of the poineers of southwestern Iowa. Death occurred at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. William Fosbrink in Clarinda, which was also the scene of the funeral Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, the services being conducted by Rev. McConaughy of the Covenenter church, and interment in the city cemetery. Some weeks ago an operation was performed at the Powers hospital, from which he rallied, but did not entirely recover. Deceased was born March 1st, 1837 in Alsace Lorraine, France (now a German Province), being the only child, his father being a farmer. Growing to manhood, he served seven years in the French army, during the Franco-Austrian war. Later he graduated from the Strassburg university, and in 1842 was married to Madeline Shank. In 1866 they concluded to try their fortunes in America, and came to McHenry county, Ill., where they lived on a farm for three years, then came to Page county, Ia., and have lived here ever since, being among our pioneer settlers. At first he worked as a laborer at day wages, likewise acting as local preacher in the United Brethern church. It was in 1879 that he took to farming, buying the present home place south of Clarinda, 130 acres, which he cleared and cultivated, for it was a part of the western prairies. He took out naturalization papers early in his career, and all his life was a good citizen and a member of the republican party. Nine children were born, eight of whom are still living, and all were present at the the funeral except one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Fosbrink of Hiawatha, Kans. The other six are W. H. Guenther of Byers, Colo., J. P. Guenther of Jefferson, Iowa, and living near Clarinda Mrs. Wm. Fosbrink, Mrs. Lena Prigge, and Clarence, Alfred and George Guenther.

Henry Guenther died Sunday at the home of Wm. Fosbrink in North Clarinda, where he had been residing some time and taken sick. Mr. Guenther was born in Germany and a resident of this county many years, following farm. He was 77 years old at the time of his death. Guenther, Madelean Schenck -

Madelean Schenck was born m Drachenbronw, Germany, August 2, 1841, and died at her home September 20, 1912, being 71 years, 1 month and 18 days old at her death.                         
She was left motherless at a tender age but kept house for her father until the 12th day of July, 1863, when she was, united in marriage to Henry Guenther. To this union were born, nine children, all living except one, a daughter, Minnie, dying in infancy. If Mrs. Guenther had lived until the 12th day of July, 1913, she and her husband would have been married fifty years.
They came to America with three small children, settling near Woodstock, Ill. After three years' time they decided to come to Iowa. They lived near Hawleyville two years, then moved to Harlan township, living there nearly thirty-five years.
At the age of fourteen she was confirmed in the German Lutheran church and continued that relationship through life.
The living children are Mrs. Lena Prigga and Mrs Lizzie Fosbrink:, Clarinda, Iowa; W. H. Guenther, Byers, Colo.; P. J. Guenther, Jefferson, Iowa; G. I. Guenther, Clarinda; Mrs. Maggie Fosbrink, Hiawatha, Kans.; A. E. Guenther, and C. E. Guenther, Clarinda. Thus she left a loving husband, eight children and sixteen grandchildren to mourn her death.
Her only brother, Peter Schenck, died the 29th day of June, this year.    She leaves a sister, Mrs. Hess, living in Germany.

Her sufferings for a number of months before her death were very severe, but she endured them with Christian patience and fortitude. The funeral services were held on Sabbath, September 22d. Gunnel, Thomas S. -

Thomas S. Gunnel, well known to Clarinda people, died Nov. 8th, at the state hospital, having been born Feb. 14, 1885, and was 33 years, 8 months and 24 days old at the time of his demise. Gurner, James B. -


James B. Gurner, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gurner, died at their home on East Main street in Clarinda, Sunday, Oct. 14. The baby was just 5 months and two days of age. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon. Interment was at Oak Grove cemetery. The father drives the Wilcox Trux for the McLaughlin & Sons paving gang, the family coming to Clarinda with the pavers. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Oct 18, 1917


Gustafson, Rosa Birdie -

Rosa Birdie Gustafson was born at New Market, Iowa, October 21, 1883, and died at Clarinda, Iowa, September 16, 1909.
Mrs. Gustafson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Abbott, of this place. She had spent the greater part of her life here and was known and loved by all. She was converted at Braddyville, Iowa, at the age of sixteen and ever held her church connection most dear.
She was married January 22, to Luther G. Gustafson at Clarinda, Rev. Maclean, of the Presbyterian went to housekeeping in a home already prepared by the groom, and were just entering upon a life together that had rich promises of happiness and contentment. It seems hard that one with life so full of promise should be called hence so suddenly, but her relatives and friends bow to the will of Him "who doeth all things well ' believing that all is well and that eternity will show the wisdom of the great Creator.
The funeral services were conducted at the parental home in New Market, in the presence of many friends and relatives, by Rev. Pruitt, an old time friend, of the family. Guston, A.B. -

News came to announcing the death of A. B. Gusten at Givens, Iowa, last night. He was formerly manager for the Bell Telephone Co. in this city. PAGE COUNTY DEMOCRAT, Clarinda, Iowa, Dec 17, 1914

Word was received here Thursday morning of the death of A. B. Guston, former Manager of the Bell Telephone Co., in this city. Mr. Guston has been in poor health for some time but was not thought serious. He had been in an office in St. Joe, until about three weeks ago when he become unable to do his work and went from there to Given, la., to stay with his cousin who lives on a farm near that place, so as to be able to be out doors more.
But it seemed not to benefit him, and he died at his cousin's home last Wed- nesday morning. His death was caus- ed by some trouble of the throat. Mr. Guston made many friends while in Clarinda who will grieve to hear of his death. CLARINDA HERALD, Clarinda, Iowa, Dec 17, 1914

 

Guthrie, Gerald Emerson -

Died at the home of his parents in south College Springs, Thursday evening, June 29, at 6 o'clock, Gerald Emerson, the four year old child of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Guthrie. The child had been sick but a few days and death was caused by a complication of diseases of the head and throat. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 1, at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Shipman, and interment was made at the Maple Hill cemetery near the Springs. This is the parents' first great sorrow and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to them in their distress.

Guthrie, W.A. -

W. A. Guthrie.
The Coin Gazette has the information that W. A. Guthrie, a former resident of near Coin, died at Modesto, Calif., May 7, 1921, of neuralgia of the heart.   He is survived by his widow and four sons, one of whom is Cuthbert Burrell Guthrie,   an   industrial missionary in Africa.   The late W. A. Guthrie was born in Lexington county, N. Y., and died at the age of 78 years. The Gazette says of him: "In his life Mr. Guthrie was an honest Christian gentleman.   He came to this part of Iowa during the latter part of the sixties and settled on the farm northwest of Coin where he lived over forty years,   surrounded   by   friends and neighbors, and where he, with his estimable wife raised five   boys and educated   them.    Mr.   Guthrie was raised a Covenanter but united with the United   Presbyterian   church of Coin many years ago."

Mrs. Maggie Guy died suddenly yesterday forenoon from heart trouble, at her home with Mrs. Kate Miller, in east Clarinda, aged 72 years. She had been complaining for some time but nothing serious was anticipated. Tuesday she was up town, and yesterday morning was washing the walks when she became faint and laid down on the loung to rest. A physician was called but before reaching there in a few minutes she had expired. Mrs. Guy was a motherly old lady and highly respected. She was a sister to T. J. Bracken, and her husband dying about ten years ago in Indiana she removed to this city. The funeral date has not been fixed, awaiting the arrival of her son from Sheridan, Wyo. Guynn, E.U., Mrs -

Mrs. E. U. Gwynn.
Mrs. E. U. Gwynn was born in Seymore, Jackson Co., Indiana, in 1843, died at her home in Braddyville on April 17, 1917, at the age of 72 years, she came to Maryville, Mo., in 1875, and was married to Marion Gwynn on March 17th of the same year, to this union were born four children: Mrs. Mayme Shearer and Frank and Curtis of Braddyville,. and Mrs. Elizabeth Purviance of Rockford, Ill. In the yearof 1887 they moved to a farm southeast of town, which farm she owned until the time of her death. She continued to reside on the farm, with the exception of a few years. She lived in Clarinda, la., in 1915. She rented the farm and moved to Braddyville having purchased the Dew property, where she made her home with her son Curtis. She joined the Methodist church at the age of twelve, and remained a member throughout life, besides her children she leaves 13 grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. W. T. Garrett, of Maryville, one brother Blackburn Leffler of Seymore, Ind., to mourn the loss of her departure. Funeral services were held at the home conducted by Rev. E. Unice Guynn was born in Seymour, Jackson county, Ind., in 1843. She moved to Missouri in 1875 and was married March 17, 1875, to Marion Guynn at Maryville, Mo, Then they moved to Iowa living near Braddyville. To them were born four children, two girls and two boys —Mayme Josephine Shearer, George Franklin Guynn,. E. Elizabeth Purivance, and Curtis O. Guynn, all of whom are living. She has one sister and one brother, Mrs. W. T. Garrett of Maryville, Mo., and Blackburn Leffler of. Seymour, Ind.
She became a member of the Methodist Episcopal, church at the age of twelve years at Seymour, Ind., and was an active church worker until her death. She died in Braddyville, April 17, 1917, from pneumonia fever at the age of 74 years. She leaves to mourn their loss, her four children, thirteen grandchildren, one brother, one sister, and a host of friends who will greatly miss her. CLARINDA JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Apr 26, 1917

Mrs. E. U. Guynn of Braddyville, who had been ill with pneumonia, died at her home there, Tuesday night, April 17, 1917. Funeral services were to be held from the home, today at 1 o'clock, preached by the Rev. D. O. Yeager, pastor of the Braddyville Methodist Episcopal church.
