Searles, Alva Milton, was born in Linn county, Kans., Nov 25, 1863. He was one of a family of ten brothers and sisters, of which one brother and one sister survive. Nearly all of his life was spent in Clarinda. He was a bridge carpenter and for many years was foreman of the bridge gang from Clarinda on the Burlington rialway. For the last four years he had been living with his sister in Coffeyville, Kans. The remains were brought to Clarinda where the funeral was held at the Oates undertaking parlors Thuesday afternoon, at 3:30, conducted by Rev J.M. williams. Burial was in the Clarinda cemetery. Searles, Alva M., - The remains of a former Clarinda resident, Alva M. Searles, were brought home for burial Tuesday, being laid to rest in Clarinda cemetery after short funeral services in the C.H. Oates Undertaking Parlors, conducted by the Methodist pastor, Rev J.M. Williams. His death occurred June 25th, in Coffeyville, Kans., where for four years past he has been living with a sister, but before that spent his life in Clarinda, where he was a bridge carpenter for many years, employed with the C.B. & Q. Searls, William - Word has been received here that William Searls, formerly of this place but for the past nineteen or twenty years a resident of Hebron, Neb., died at his home last Saturday. He will be remembered by many of our citizens as he was one of the early settlers in this county, and during the last few years he was here he kept a hotel near the depot. He was a brother of Mrs J.H. Hoskins, and has a number of relatives living in this part of the country. His death was caused by cancer of the stomach. Funeral services were held Sunday. Searles, Maggie Simonton - Mrs Thos Searles, formerly Miss Maggie Simonton, died Saturday morning from consumption and was buried Sunday afternoon. They came back here this fall from Leon. Sinn, Eva Verhey - Services for Mrs Frank (Eva) Sinn, 90, will be held at 11 am, Friday at the Lavelle Funeral Home, with Rev Cecil Latta officiating. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Hugh Loudon, G.W. Richardson, Edwin Lisle, George Ritson, Al Pfander, Fiddle Miller and Norris Freeman. The organist will be Mrs Gene Garrett.

Mrs Sinn died Tuesday morning at the Hylonad Convalescent Hospital in Fresno, Cal.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 till 8:30 pm this evening at the Lavelle Funeral Home. Members of the family who will be present at the service will be Mr and Mrs Charles Sinn, their four children, Bob, Bill, Steve and Sally, and Bill's two children, Sharon and Debra.

She was born Sept 27, 1883, at Pella, the daughter of William and Mary Croll Verhey. She was raised in the Pella area, where she received her education.

She was married to J. Frank Sinn Oct 3, 1907 in Des Moines. They moved to Clarinda after their marriage where Mr Sinn was associated with the Berry Seed Co. Mr Sinn died in 1947. She lived in her home at 223 West Willow until she went to California last September to be near her son.

She is survived by one son, Charles of Fresno, Cal, one sister, Mrs Charles McKee of Des Moines and a half-sister, Mrs Charles Loveless of LaPorte City. She has seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, William.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarinda and a member of PEO Chapter AE of Clarinda.

Stalnaker, Donald C., age 93, of Clarinda. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lunette.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Milan Shaw of Clarinda; 3 grandchildren Lori DeBoer and husband Steve; Elizabeth Mohlman and husband Lyle and Brian Shaw; 2 great grandchildren Elijah Mohlman and Jerica Mohlman.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Omaha, Nebraska.

Visitation will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery at Omaha, Nebraska. Memorials to Covenant Presbyterian Church. Roeder Mortuary, Inc. in Omaha was in charge of arrangements. Complete obituary to follow.

Donald Claire Stalnaker, age 93 of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Omaha, Nebraska, died Friday, April 14, 2006 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday April 18th at Covenant Presbyterian church in Omaha, Nebraska where he was a life time member. Visitation was held at the church prior to the service. Burial was at Forrest Lawn cemetery in Omaha. Roeder Mortuary was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Covenant church.
Don was born April 27th, 1912 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He was orphaned at age 3 along with a brother and a sister and they were placed in the Child Savings Institute in Omaha. Don was adopted at age 4 by Waitman and Fannie Stalnaker on June 15th, 1916. He also had one step sister, Ethel Brazee.

Don attended Lathrop and Saratoga grade schools in Omaha and graduated from Technical High School in May of 1930.
Don became acquainted with his real brother when he was in high school but then lost track of him over the years. His real sister contacted him 5 years ago, and although they never were able to meet, they spoke frequently over the phone.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Lunette Thorson, on December 25th, 1931. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage before her death to cancer in 1991.

Don was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone company in Omaha from April, 1930, until he retired at age 65.
Besides his family, Don had many loves. He loved to fish and looked forward to his yearly trip to Minnesota fishing. He was an active member of the Omaha Camera club, winning several honors. He also had a great interest in gardening, golfing and any activity that would allow him to be outdoors.

At age 89, Don moved to Clarinda to be close to his daughter. He enjoyed attending the Congregate Meal site at the Lied Center where he met many new friends.

He is survived by his daughter Beverly Shaw and husband Milan of Clarinda; grandchildren Lori DeBoer and husband Steve of Waterloo, Iowa; Elizabeth Mohlman and husband Lyle of Columbus, Nebraska and Brian Shaw of Lincoln, California; plus great grandchildren Jerica Mohlman and Elijah Mohlman.

Preceding him in death was his beloved wife Lunette, his adoptive parents, birth parents, step sister and birth brother and sister and grandchild Amy Diane Shaw.


Steeve - Beulah Steeve, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Westridge Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 Monday, December 27, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Clarinda, Iowa, with Pastor Jerome Wagoner officiating. Visitation with the family will be 7-8 p.m., Sunday, December 26, 2004 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the Clarinda Lutheran School. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Steeve, Larry Allen, son of Paul & Edna (Brethauer) Steeve was born August 23, 1940 at Clarinda, Iowa. He passed away on Sept. 24, 2005 in the emergency room at Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa. He was 65 years old.
   
Larry graduated from Clarinda High School and worked for a while at the Mt. Ayr Record-News. Later, he lived in Indianola and worked as a printer/press operator in Des Moines for better than 35 years.

In June 1962, he married Linda Dill. Two sons were born to this union: Richard Allen and Darryl Dean.

Twenty-five years ago, Larry bought property and a home on Sun Valley Lake near Ellston, Iowa and has lived there full time since 1993. Larry loved to fish and spent many happy hours fishing and entertaining family and friends. Larry was an excellent father and grandfather. He loved his family. His home was always a gathering place for them. Larry also loved to play cards, especially cribbage.

Larry liked being with people and attended both the Tingley and Mt. Ayr Meal sites regularly. He has served for many years on the Advisory Board for Area XIV Agency on Aging. Earlier he served as vice-president of the Iowa Aging Coalition.

Preceding Larry in death besides his parents were 2 brothers Jim & Ron; 4 sisters Marge (Huseman), Arlene (Woldruff), Evelyn (Knight) and Ruth Steeve; 2 brothers-in-law Omar Swanson and Max Huseman.

Left to mourn his passage are his ex-wife Linda Steeve of Ankeny, Iowa; sons Richard & wife Shelly Steeve of Indianola, IA and Darryl Steeve of Ellston, IA; 2 grandchildren Courtney Steeve and Paul Steeve of Indianola; Larry's faithful companion, Irma Huntsman; 1 brother Lyle Steeve and wife Pat of Corning, IA; 1 sister Mary Ann Swanson of Clarinda, IA; 1 sister-in-law Dora Steeve of Clarinda, IA; 1 brother-in-law Jim Woldruff of Clarinda, IA.

A memorial service was held at Tingly on October 8, 2005.

 

Stevens, Barb, age 59, of Clarinda, Iowa died Friday, February 24, 2006, at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 7-8 p.m., Monday, February 27, 2006 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, rural Villisca, Iowa. A memorial will be established. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Ann Stevens was born August 20, 1946 at Red Oak, Iowa to Harley B. Bangston and Wilma B. (Buffington) Bangston. She was a 1964 graduate of Villisca High School. Barb graduated from William Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa with honors in 1968. On October 19, 1974, she was united in marriage at Villisca, Iowa to Robert Stevens.

Barb taught at Lone Tree, Iowa. She also had worked at the Glenwood State School and Clarinda Mental Health Institute and most recently had worked some at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab Center. Barb had assisted with the Faith, Food and Fellowship group. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Barb enjoyed history. Following her mother's death in 1972, Wilma (Miller) Bangston later became her devoted second mother.

Preceding Barb in death were her parents; two infant children. David D. Stevens and Timothy L. Stevens; step daughter, Rachelle Stevens; step son, Paul A. Stevens.

Survivors include her husband Robert Stevens of Clarinda, Iowa; son, Robert J. (Robbie) Stevens of Clarinda, Iowa; step-son, Danny Stevens of Canada; brother, Richard Bangston of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Dr. Martha L. (Marty) Shockey and her fiancé, Keith Eckles of St. Louis, Missouri; step-mother, Wilma E. Bangston of Villisca, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

 

Stevenson, Violet M., age 84, of Clarinda, Iowa formerly of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at the Westridge Care and Rehab Center in Clarinda, Iowa. Violet Mae Stevenson was born September 3, 1920 in Montgomery County, Iowa the daughter of James and Cordella (Hooper) Summers. She was raised in Montgomery County and was united in marriage to Edgar Stevenson on July 1, 1937 in Red Oak, Iowa. They were lifelong residents of Southwest Iowa. Violet was a homemaker and enjoyed being involved in the neighborhood clubs throughout the years. She also enjoyed her grandkids, puzzles, cooking, shopping and going out to eat. Violet was known for her large collection of teddy bears.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Edgar Stevenson on June 15, 2001; sister: Blanche Kinnison; 3 brothers: Lee, Lyman and Cecil Summers; and a grandson: Robert Marckmann.
Survivors include her 2 daughters: Shirley Weil and husband Richard of California; and Connie Stevenson of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren: Jim Marckmann and wife Stephanie of Clarinda, Iowa; Eddie Marckmann and wife Carolyn of Branson, Missouri; Rick Weil and wife Amy of Malvern, Iowa; Cheryl Harrison and husband Allen of California; and Nickey Smith and husband Glenn of California; great grandchildren: Zachary, Michael, Garret, A.J., and Nathaniel all of Clarinda, Iowa; Krista, Shiloh, Keegan and Cheyenne all of Malvern, Iowa; Michael and Christopher of California; Robby of Creston, Iowa; and Gabriel of Murray, Iowa; 2 sisters-in-law: Peggy Cassell of California; and Darlene Summers of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with Rev. Nancy Schultz officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family was held 4-6 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2005 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Stiverson,  Annette Carol, age 66, of Brooksville, Florida, and formerly of Keokuk and Clarinda, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at Oak Hill Hospital in Florida. She was born April 14, 1939 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of John and Georgia (Hall) Benedict. On May 28, 1964 she was married to Donald Max Stiverson in Keokuk, Iowa. Annette worked as a site manager for Meals on Wheels in Brooksville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; a granddaughter, Kimberly; and her sister, Barb. She is survived by two sons, Michael Stiverson of Culter, Illinois and Carol Smith of Burlington, Iowa; a daughter, Donna Land of Brooksville, Florida; stepson, Eldon Stiverson and his wife Betty of Clarinda, Iowa; two step daughters, Tammy North of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Pamela Miller of Brooksville, Florida; one brother; four sisters; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, June 7, 2005 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda with Mike Gibson officiating. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date in Florida. A memorial fund is being established. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda was in charge of arrangements.

 

Stiverson, Joan Carol Sugg, age 56, of LaGrange, North Carolina, died Thursday, May 4, 2006 in Lenoir Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 6th at 2:00 p.m. from the Church Street Chapel of the Farmville Funeral Home by Rev. Benjamin Simms. Interment followed in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens near Farmville.

Mrs. Stiverson is survived by her husband, David Stiverson of the home; one daughter, Carol Warner of Goldsboro, North Carolina; her mother, Katie Sugg of LaGrange; one sister, Jean Jones of Darlington, South Carolina; one brother, Don Ray Sugg of Clarksville, Georgia; and two grandchildren.

The family received friends at the Farmville Funeral Home, Friday evening, May 5th from 6 until 8 p.m.

David Stiverson, her husband, is originally from Clarinda and has family in the area.

 

Stone, Frances Frauline, age 102 of Clarinda, IA passed away Friday afternoon, December 23, 2005 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa. She was born September 29, 1903 the daughter of Jesse and Zillie Melvina (Irving) Sheirbon. Frances graduated from Maryville High Schoo,l, Maryville, MO. She was united in marriage to Don Wilson and they had four children: Dennis & Donnis, Junior, and Bill. She worked as an aide at the M.H.I and was the first women employed Lisle Corp being hired during World War II. She was a homemaker, a babysitter, and she also took care of her parents and her three sons. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; sons Dennis Lee Wilson in 1990; Junior Dale Wilson 1995; William Oliver "Bill" Wilson 1999; and an infant daughter, Donnis Larue; brothers Homer and wife Beatrice Sheirbon, and Stanley Sheirbon. Survivors include grandson William "Butch" Wilson and his wife Kim of Bellevue, Ne; sister-in-law Helen Sheirbon; grandchildren of Florida, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda with Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Burial was at Clearmont Cemetery, Clearmont, MO. Memorials are suggested to the Braddyville Methodist Church. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

 

Strohm, John – Mr John Strohm, a young photographer of Shenandoah, whose marriage was announced about three weeks ago, dropped dead in his gallery, Monday in the presence of his young bride, without a moment’s warning, so says the Shenandoah Post. Truly in the midst of life we are in death.

Strong, Sylas Lee, infant son of Shawn and Amy (Sterk) Strong, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at Barnes Jewish Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, Mo. He was born July 13, 2006, at Springfield, Mo. Survivors include his parents and three-year-old brother, Lucas Strong, Springfield, Mo.; grandparents, Bob and Glenna Strong, Coin, and Loren and Dyan Sterk, Sheldon; great-grandmothers, Jeanette Sterk, Sheldon, and Virginia (Gam) Strong, Sidney, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial service was held 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006, at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, with The Rev. Carl Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Sullivan, Barbara J., 71, of Edwards, Mo., formerly of Waterloo, Ia, died at home Sunday, Jan 30, 2005 of natural causes.
She was born April 2, 1933 in Waterloo, the daughter of Pete J. and Olga Klepich Sulentic. She married John C. Sullivan June 19, 1951, in Bentonville, Ark. John lived near Hepburn, Ia, before moving to Waterloo.
Mrs. Sullivan was employed with Campbell Homes Real Estate and also owned and operated F and F Dining Hall until her retirement. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for 38 years and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sedalia, Mo. She was a charter member of the Waterloo 600 Bowling Club and was on the board of directors of the Waterloo Bowling Assoc for many years. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her husband of Edwards, Mo; a son, John Ray Sullivan and wife Bonny of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Troy , John, Raphael, Kimmy, Deb, Harmony, and Sarah; seven great-grandchildren; brother Paul Sulentic and wife Mary of Albert lea, Mn; two sisters, Kay Bruner and Michelle Geisler both of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Paul; a brother, Tony Sulentic; and two infant sisters.
Services were held Thursday, Feb 3, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to the church. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda and Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service of Waterloo handled arrangements.

 

Sump, Gail Marie, age 67, of Clarinda, Iowa, died suddenly Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 26, 2005, at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa, with Pastor Gary Jaeckle officiating. Visitation with the family will be held 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2005 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery. Gail Marie Sump was born April 14, 1937, at Kansas City, Missouri. She was the daughter of Clyde Charles Apple and Ethelyn Marjorie (Chaffin) Apple. Gail Marie was a graduate of Clarinda High School and also attended technical school. She was united in marriage April 8, 1956, to Leonard Leo Sump. Prior to her marriage she worked at Clarinda Oil and was then employed at Page County Treasurer office, Wynn Fertilizer and for many years at Westridge Care and Rehab Center retiring in 2000. Gail Marie was an Avon representative since 1969 and currently was also working at Noah’s Ark Daycare. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Gail Marie enjoyed reading, collecting bells and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren.
Preceding Gail Marie in death were her parents; husband, Leonard Sump (2/11/03); infant daughter, Patricia Sue Sump; brother-in-law, Lee Brown. Survivors include her son, Dwight David Sump of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Beverly Jean Warner and husband Craig of Mustang, Oklahoma; grandchildren: Nathan Sump, Zachary Hughes, Lacey Warner; parents-in-law, Herbert and Clara Sump of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law, Clythia Brown of Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law, Ron Sump and wife Barbara of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law, Joyce Johnson and husband Dick of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law, Doris Prouty of Louisville, Kentucky; brother-in-law, Morris Sump and wife Shirley of Clarinda, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

 

Sunderman - Florence H. Sunderman, 81, of Lincoln, passed away on November 10, 2004. She was born July 24, 1923 in Davenport, NE.

 

Sunderman, Mary Kay, age 59, of College Springs, Iowa, died Monday, February 07, 2005, at her home in College Springs, Iowa. Memorial services will be held 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Presbyterian Church, College Springs, Iowa with Rev. James Crapson officiating. Mary Kay Sunderman was born April 21, 1945, at Clarinda, Iowa, to Kenneth Walter Ripley and Patsy (Little) Ripley. She was a graduate of South Page High School, College Springs, Iowa and Northwest Missouri University, Maryville, Missouri. Mary Kay began teaching in 1981 and was currently a teacher at the South Page Community School. She enjoyed reading, watching sports, and attending anything for the grandkids. Mary Kay was a member of the College Springs Presbyterian Church.
Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her three sons: Chris Sunderman and his wife Joy of Braddyville, Iowa, Chad Sunderman and his wife Michelle of Shambaugh, Iowa, Curt Sunderman of Blanchard, Iowa; grandchildren: Jessica Sunderman, Trevor Sunderman, Treyton Sunderman, Jacob Sunderman, Travis Sunderman, Mercedez Sunderman, Aziah Sunderman; brother, Gene Ripley and his wife Robin of College Springs, Iowa; sister, Barbara Ann McGowen and her husband John of Oakland, Iowa; brother, Jim Ripley of College Springs, Iowa; brother, Bill Ripley and his wife Tina of Elmo, Missouri.

Mervil John Henry Sunderman was born November 20, 1916, on his parent’s farm, rural Clarinda, Iowa, to Emil Sunderman and Minnie (Meyers) Sunderman. Mervil was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended the Immanuel Lutheran School. He was an active lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and had served on the School Board and the Church Board. Mervil was united in marriage August 31, 1938, to Mabel Sump at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Mervil started farming with his father, continued farming through his lifetime, and most recently was farming with his son.
Survivors include his wife Mabel of Clarinda, Iowa; daughter, Twyla Otte and husband Carl of Surprise, Arizona; daughter, Carolyn Drake and husband Douglas of Urbandale, Iowa; son, Clinton Sunderman and wife Pat of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren: Kimberly Otte and husband Tom Burket, Valerie Scholten and husband Nathan, Pamela Colquette and husband Phil, Patricia Mersiowsky and husband Andy, Denise Drake and husband Jon Chesnutt, Brenda Lesch and husband Steve, Kara Schmitz and husband Jim, Renae Prieto and husband Matt, Brent Sunderman, Ryan Sunderman and wife Kresta; twenty-three great grandchildren; brothers: Clifford Sunderman and wife Maxine of Shenandoah, Iowa; Otis Sunderman of Lincoln, Nebraska; Arlo Sunderman and wife Roseanna of Braddyville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Milda Sunderman of Fort Dodge, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ethel Wichman of Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law, Herbert Sump and wife Clara of Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law, Wayne Sump and wife Elnora of Clarinda, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Mervil in death were his parents; parents-in-law, John and Mary Sump; brother, Roger Sunderman and wife Lyda; sister-in-law, Florence Sunderman; brother-in-law, Bill Wichman; brother-in-law, Eldor Sump and wife Anna.

 

Sunderman, Wayne John, was born April 11, 1921 to Dan and Emma (Rurode) Sunderman at the farm home one mile east and one half mile south of Bethesda. He passed away Friday evening, February 18, 2005 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab in Clarinda following a lengthy illness. Wayne was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church on May 1, 1921. He attended Immanuel Parochial School for eight years and was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church on April 14, 1935. His confirmation verse was Matthew 7:13-14. Wayne was married to Lorene Carlson on July 27, 1940. Wayne lived in the Bethesda area for 62 years. Farming was his occupation. Wayne and Lorene farmed 42 years on the farm one mile east of Bethesda. Wayne retired in 1982 and drew up plans for their retirement home in Clarinda. They moved to their new home in October of 1982. Wayne continued to help on the farm for five more years and he pursued his hobbies of fishing and woodworking. Wayne made a lot of beautiful items of wood and enjoyed giving them to friends. Wayne loved working for the church. He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Wayne held several jobs at Immanuel, church council, various committees and was a faithful member of the Lutheran Laymans League. In 2004, Wayne and Lorene moved to a smaller home at 124 W. Boundary in Clarinda. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Don Warrick and a brother-in-law Marrel Sump. Survivors include his wife Lorene of the home; two children, Larry Sunderman and his wife Irma of Clarinda, Peggy Rader and her husband Jim of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren, Randy Sunderman and his wife Alise of Ankeny, IA, Brenda Toney and her husband Bruce of Lincoln, NE, Brian Warrick and his wife Jennifer of Colorado Springs, CO; four great grandchildren, Aaron and Jeffrey Sunderman and Alex and Megan Toney; sister Ruth Sump; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb 21, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Jerome Wagoner officiating. Burial was at Immanuel Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church or Lutheran Layman’s League. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

 

 


Sunderman, Beulah Josephine (Hughes), age 96 of Clarinda passed away Sunday afternoon, March 6, 2005 at Clarinda Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness. She was born January 12, 1909 in the house her father built at the corner of 1st and Washington Streets, the daughter of Bertie Henry and Effie Belle (Edmonds) Hughes. Beulah’s grandfather, James Hughes, was one of the earliest settlers in Iowa in 1846. She attended Kile Country School and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1927 with a teaching certificate. She taught seven years in country schools: Douglas #9, Spring Hill, Linn Point, and McCunn. . On August 8, 1935, Beulah was married to Lorenz John Friedrick Sunderman. They lived on farms near Hepburn and Villisca, later moving to Beulah's home place near Clarinda. In 1946, the couple moved to Lorenz's home place east of Bethesda. She was an active partner on the farm, caring for livestock and helping with the fieldwork. Beulah remained on the farm until she moved to her apartment in Clarinda in September of 1979.
Beulah and Lorenz loved music and were excellent dancers. She loved the ukelele, guitar and piano.
She was a charter member of the Country Gardens Club, started in 1952, and continued as long as her health permitted. People admired her beautiful flower gardens. Lorenz, Beulah and two sons traveled to most of the western and southern states. When they tried fishing in Pakwash Lake in Canada, they were hooked. Thereafter, the yearly trip to the lake was shared with many friends. Playing cards and attending sporting events were also favorite pastimes. With the arrival of her first grandchild in 1957, her life was forever changed. She freely gave of her time and love to care for the grand and great-grandchildren. Norman’s children spent a lot of time at Grandma's house. Throughout the years, she enjoyed many trips with their family. She watched Lyle’s children while their parents did the farming. She spent many hours in the stands watching games.
Her faith in God gave her strength to endure arthritis pain for more than 50 years. Even in the last year of additional pain caused by Scleroderma to the fingers and toe, she didn’t complain.
She waited patiently for God to take her home. She and Lorenz were charter members of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Villisca. After moving to Bethesda, they joined Immanuel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lorenz in 1966; two brothers and their spouses, Paul and Eva Hughes and Harold and Dorothy Hughes.
Survivors include her two sons, Lyle Sunderman and his wife Ardith of Clarinda, Norman Sunderman and his wife Hazel of Plattsmouth, NE; great grandchildren: Jason & Jeremy Sunderman, Alissa Swift, Tamra Wheeler & Steven Sapp, children of Chris & Laura Sunderman; Amy Dix, Angie and Aubrey Torres, children of Dana & John Torres; Eric & Jena Vangroningen, children of Debbie Chinnow; Cheri & Taylor Sunderman, children of Kirk Sunderman; Jessica, Ashley & Marisa Sunderman, children of Kevin & Michelle Sunderman; Austin Sunderman and his wife Alison and Derek Sunderman, children of Alan and Denise Sunderman and great-great grandchildren are: Nicholas Sapp son of Steven Sapp; Kale Sunderman son of Jason & Amber Sunderman; Tyler, Shyann, Jessie & Katie Sunderman children of Jeremy & Billi Sunderman; Ayva Swift daughter of Alissa & Brian Swift; Elijah Dix son of Amy & Joel Dix; and Julie, Lisa and Samuel Pitman, children of Rhonda and Doug Pitman; three sisters-in-law, Erna Nothwehr, Violet Holste, Marie Eitzen and her husband Harold; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Clarinda with Rev. Jerome Wagoner officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.
Family visitation was held Tuesday evening at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda.

Sunderman, Ivan William, was born on December 25, 1920 to Robert H. F. and Hattie Lisetta Maria (Goecker) Sunderman northwest of Clarinda. Ivan was baptized at Immanuel Church January 9, 1921 and confirmed April 14, 1935. He was married to Mary Frances McElwee on January 8, 1961 in Rayville, Missouri. Ivan farmed his whole life north of Clarinda on the farm where he was born.

He farmed with his dad, brother and son over the years until his health failed and he moved to Westridge Quality Care & Rehab in 2004. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Page County Farm Bureau and Clarinda Co-Op. He liked to play cards with family and friends. Pitch was his favorite card game. Ivan loved to travel over the years with family and friends.

He was able to go to Europe, the Rose Bowl one time, and visited his sister in Virginia and South Carolina, among many other places. Ivan liked to go dancing and was a very good dancer. He enjoyed Glenn Miller music and all types of music. In his retirement he liked to go to the Clarinda Co-Op and Hy-Vee for coffee. He also enjoyed going to the Inda-Clar to visit with friends.

Ivan is preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1976, his parents, and brother Marvin.

He is survived by his children: son Jim Sunderman and wife Carrie of Clarinda; daughters Terry and husband Mark Rowley of Urbandale, Iowa; Sherry Sunderman of Kansas City, Missouri; Alice and husband Richard Osborn of Clarinda; Linda and husband Ernie Owen of Clarinda; Mary Ann and husband Fred Allard of Lawrenceburg, Missouri; grandchildren Jadyn Sunderman; Zachary and Mary Rowley; Nicki Hughes; Wendy Nothwehr; Tim and Robert Owen; Tracey Lambert and Kent Allard; six great grandchildren; sister Bernice Helsley of Columbia South Carolina; sister-in-law Juanita Sunderman of Clearmont, Missouri, nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2005 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Lawrence Boye officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Cemetery. Swanda, Janelle, 55, of Fremont

Janelle Joyce Waage was born October 23, 1949 in Clarinda, Iowa to Ralph and Floy (Neill) Waage. She attended rural school at Grant and Nodaway, Iowa. In 1959, the Waage family moved from the Iowa farm to Fremont where Janelle finished her elementary and high school years. She graduated from Fremont High School in 1967. She graduated with honors from Metropolitan Community Technical College in 1992 and that same year she was initiated into the Phi Theta Kappa Society. Janelle and LeRoy Swanda were married January 15, 1993 at the First Methodist Church in Fremont where she was confirmed and a long standing member.

Janelle worked with Montgomery Ward Company in Omaha as a manager with the Plain and Fancy dress shop in Fremont, and as a counselor with the Crisis Center for Domestic Abuse/Sexual Assault in Fremont. While at the Crisis Center, she was instrumental in furnishing and managing the safe home for abused women and children. Janelle enjoyed a special relationship with her many friends in the Fremont community, especially with her bunko family.

Janelle's family was a great pride and joy for her, especially her grandchildren, grandnieces and grandnephews. She will always be remembered for her strong indomitable spirit, fun-loving nature and love for all things this life has to offer. Her immense courage to overcome the setbacks of years of ill health has been an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Janelle is survived by her husband LeRoy of Fremont; her 2 stepchildren Kellie Swanda & (fiancé Jeff Johnson) and Kevin Swanda; step grandchildren, Samuel Johnson and Tony Swanda all of Fremont; special daughter-in-law Rose and husband Eric Anderson and son Alston Anderson of Fremont; brother Sam and wife Nancy Waage of Scribner, grandnephews Mark and wife Dawn Waage of Omaha and Ryon Waage of Grand Island; sister Andrea Waage Rootham and husband John of Glyndon, MN; grandnephew Robert and wife Cindy Rootham and children Alexander and Sophie Janelle Rootham all of Moorehead, MN; grandniece Kirstin Rootham Carlson and husband Todd and children Nathan and Aiden Carlson of Moorehead, MN; aunt Ernestine Neill Hiley of Avoca, IA and many extended Waage and Swanda family members.

Janelle is preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Floy (Neill) Waage.

Visitation was held Wednesday, October 5, 2005 from 2-8 p.m. with family receiving friends from 6:30-7:30 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m., all at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation continued from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment was at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Pallbearers were John and Robert Rootham, Todd Carlson, Eric Anderson, Jeff Johnson and Zachary Kopejtka.

Celebration of Life Service for were held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2005 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Greg Hall of First United Methodist Church, Fremont officiated the service.

Swanson, Warren Elwood, age 83, the son of Taugie E. and Laura V. (Gustafson) Swanson, was born October 25, 1921, near Bethesda, Iowa, and passed away September 8, 2005, in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Growing up in the Bethesda area Warren attended country school and Clarinda Community Schools, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He continued his education at Clarinda Community College. On September 14, 1947, Warren was united in marriage to Evelyn Bowman of Shenandoah and to this marriage a daughter, Gloria, was born. They continued living on the family farm near Bethesda later moving to Shenandoah.

Through the years Warren was engaged in farming, working at a shoe store, Henry Fields and Earl May Seed and Nurserys. For 27 years Warren served as custodian at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church and Lutheran Brotherhood and served nine years on the Clarinda School Board of Directors.

Warren was known to enjoy visiting with his friends and family but most of all he enjoyed his grandchildren and looked forward to their visits.

Preceding Warren in death were his parents; sister, Annabelle Hanson; and brother-in-law, Bob Hanson.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Evelyn of Shenandoah; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Dirk Coleman of Oviedo, Florida; three grandchildren, Philip, Marshall and Felicia Coleman all from Oviedo. Also surviving are three nephews and their wives, Darwin and Miriam Hanson of Villisca, Iowa, Delaine and Evie Hanson from Stanton, Iowa, and Curtis and Betsy Hanson from Rochester, Minnesota; plus several cousins, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Warren's life was held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 10, 2005, at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bethesda, Iowa. Pastor Sarah Brown officiated while Matthew Hanson was the cross bearer. Joan Setterburg served at the memory register and Rosemary Carlson and Carmen Lundberg cared for the flowers. Organist was Yvonne Johnson and soloist was Denae Wallin who sang Children of the Heavenly Father and Just A Closer Walk With Thee. Ushers were Keith Nelson and Kent Setterburg. Casket bearers were Leslie Freed, Delmus Gutchenritter, Dennis Johnson, Gary Nelson, Jim Lundberg and Wayne Sederburg. Honorary bearer was Earl Carlson. Final resting place is in Bethesda Cemetery.
