Baker, Pearl - Pearl passed away on Wednesday morning, April 1, 2009 at the Garden View Care Center. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. A memorial is being established in Pearl's name. There will be open visitation at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 p.m. Noon until 7:00 p.m. The family will greet friends and relatives with visitation from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until service time Saturday at the First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter Shirley Teachout of Shenandoah; beloved grandchildren; great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

Bales, James LeRoy - James LeRoy Bales, the son of Glen and Darlene Thompson Bales Rupp was born in Adams County, Iowa on January 11, 1948. He passed away at his home in Essex, Iowa on Friday, April 4, 2008, following a bout with cancer at the age of 60 years, 2 months and 23 days.

James graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1969. Following graduation, he joined the U. S. Marine Corp serving nearly two years during the Vietnam War. Upon his return home he worked for many years for Ray Stewart Produce in Shenandoah. In April of 1984 James began working for Eaton Manufacturing in Shenandoah as a machinist. James enjoyed working on cars.

Preceding him in death were his father and a brother Gary. Survivors include his mother Darlene Rupp of Essex, IA; a half brother, Glen Bales and wife Gloria of Des Moines, IA; a sister Linda Bales of Essex, IA; brothers, Donald Bales of Shenandoah, IA., Richard “Pete” Bales and wife Sherry of Essex, IA and William “Billy” Bales of Essex, IA; stepson Troy Armstrong in Missouri; nieces and nephews; along with other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Oakland Cemetery in Quincy Township, Adams County, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by Vaughn Livingston. Casket bearers were Bob Branson, Gary McAlpin, James Stewart, David Hoyt, Mike Hoyt and Troy Armstrong. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements. Baldwin, Irmalee Barnard - Irmalee Baldwin, daughter of George A. and Iva E. (Racobs) Barnard was born on December 27, 1925 in Sidney, Iowa. She entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 84.
Growing up in Sidney, Irmalee attended the Sidney Community Schools, graduating from Sidney High School with the Class of 1943. Following high school Irmalee moved to California where she worked in a factory during World War II for the war effort. She also attended college at Whittier ROP.
On October 26, 1946, Irmalee was united in marriage to William E. Baldwin in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union was born three children, Richard, Michael and Leanna Marie. Irmalee later worked at the Whittier Physicians Exchange and the Whittier Presbyterian Hospital where she worked as an admitting clerk. Prior to moving to Shenandoah in 2001, she lived in Wichita, Kansas. Irmalee was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was an avid reader.
Preceding Irmalee in death were her parents; daughter, Leanna Marie (Baldwin) Macy; husband, William; grandson, James Baldwin; and sister, Thelma Powels.

Barnes, Dale - Dale Barnes was born on June 1, 1934 in Hamburg, Iowa, the son of Vernon and Merna (Smalley) Barnes. He entered into eternal peace on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at the Manor of Malvern in Malvern, Iowa.

Dale went to public school for several years before attending school at the Iowa School for The Deaf, where he completed his education. He later worked at the Donut Stop in Shenandoah, at Hardee’s in Clarinda, and did other odd jobs around the area.

Dale was a fun loving guy. He was a hard worker and enjoyed helping others. His family was very important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece Pamela Ann Barnes.

Barrett, Ronald Ross - Ronald Ross Barrett was born on April 1, 1939 in Shenandoah, Iowa; he was the son of Ross William and Dorothy Marie (Cooper) Barrett. Ronald entered into peace on Tuesday evening, March 10, 2009 at his home followed by a brave battle with cancer.
Ron was raised in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1957. On January 17, 2009 he was united in marriage to Gloria King in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
During Ron’s working days he was employed by Earl May Nursery in Shenandoah, Cooks Paint in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Western Electric, and AT&T from which he retired in 1997.
Ron was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time with nature and wildlife. He was especially fond of his beloved dogs, Misty and Jay, whom he left behind. While living in Wyoming he served as a hunting guide in the Grand Tetons. He also enjoyed listening to music, particularly early rock-n-roll and country. He enjoyed dancing the swing and the two-step. Ron’s rock farm was also an important part of his life.
Ron was preceded in death by his father Ross Barrett and brother-in-law James Drake.

Bartles, Eldon Lloyd - Eldon Lloyd Bartles was born June 22, 1933 in Shenandoah, Iowa to Willis and Tressa (Aide) Bartles. He passed away June 24, 2008 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 75.

Eldon lived in Shenandoah all his life. He graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1951 and was then married to Margy Moates in Bedford, Iowa on December 23, 1951. The couple made their home in Shenandoah.

Eldon worked at several local restaurants before opening and owning the Matador Lounge. He also owned and operated several farms in the area. He loved working in his yard and gardening. Eldon was a member of the Shenandoah Elks Lodge and First Christian Church.

Eldon is preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Tressa Bartles; son, Sam Bartles; three sisters, Wilma, Mae and Faye and one brother, Darrell. He is survived by his wife, Margy of Shenandoah, Iowa; son, Mike Bartles and wife Pam of Shenandoah, Iowa; daughter, Joy and husband Steve Ritnour of Red Oak, Iowa; three grandchildren, Sarah, Jeff and Jasi; brother, Wendell Bartles of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 27, 2008, at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Karen Bash. Memorials are being directed to the family. The Hackett-Livingston was in charge of the arrangements.

Bartles, Hazel Marie Turnbull - Hazel Marie Bartles, daughter of Dewey and Gladys (Perry) Turnbull, was born on July 10, 1926, at Pickering, Missouri. She passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 79.
Hazel lived in Blanchard, Missouri, until she was about sixteen. At that time, she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she met and married her husband of sixty years. On October 20, 1945, Hazel was united in marriage to Wendell Bartles. They made their home in Shenandoah and raised a set of twins, Ronnie Raye and Connie Faye. Hazel worked at Henry Field’s Nursery for a number of years. In 1962, they moved to Wheatridge, Colorado, where they lived for 26 years. She was a beautician for awhile before going to work for Mountain State Metal, as a paint foreman, until her retirement in 1988. Upon retirement, they moved back to Red Oak, Iowa.
She loved to travel and stop and have coffee. Hazel also enjoyed feeding and watching wild birds, doing holiday crafts and decorating. She always had a big heart and smile for everyone. As a wife, mother and best friend, Hazel loved her family immensely. She will be remembered as the best teacher, who was always fun loving and full of time. Anybody that knew Hazel, knew that she was spunky, stubborn and always her own person.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell Bartles of Red Oak, IA; son, Ronnie Raye Bartles and wife Marsha of Red Oak, IA; daughter, Connie Faye Dalrymple and husband Robert of Homestead, FL; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two brothers, Arthur Turnbull of Shenandoah, IA, and Eugene Turnbull of Loveland, CO; two sisters, Lucille Harris and husband Jim of Denver, CO, and Viola Crawford and husband Larry of Calico Rock, AR; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Bartles, Ronald Earl - Ronald Earl Bartles, son of Harley Winston and Alice (Rounds) Bartles, was born on September 9, 1939 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
He received his education in the Shenandoah Community Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1957. He served in the U. S. Navy for three years. A longtime lumberman, Ron worked for United Building Center (Green Bay Lumber) for over 37 years. Ron was married to Peggy Chaney and Gloria Onsager, before marrying his wife of 18 years, Susie Sutton, in 1988. Ron was a member of Shenandoah Eagles Club, having served as President. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah and former member of the AMVETS. Ron Enjoyed woodworking and looked forward to attending high school football games on Friday night.
Survivors include his wife, Susie Bartles of Shenandoah; three sons, David Bartles and friend Patty Freer of Shenandaoh, Iowa, Brian Bartles of Glenwood, Iowa and Jeff Bartles of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two daughters, Shelly Campbell and her husband Les of Nebraska City, NE and Shirley Buller and her husband Jason of Red Oak, IA; sister, Cheryl Lewis and her husband Herb of Red Oak, IA; nephew, Rick Lewis and his wife Kerry of Creston, IA; niece, Sandy Taylor and friend Jason Dumler of Red Oak, IA; other relatives and many friends. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah.

Bartles, Terry Edwin - Terry Edwin Bartles, son of Milford and Jacqueline Rogers Bartles was born on December 3, 1947, and passed away at Omaha, Nebraska on Tuesday, April 17, 2007.
Terry spent his childhood in Shenandoah, Iowa attending public school there. At the age of 17 he entered the United States Army serving until 1990 when he was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Karen Bryan and to this union four children were born, David, Janet, Curtis and Lesa. After his retirement from the Army he returned to Shenandoah and worked several jobs. He attended and graduated from Gateway Technical Institute with several degrees.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews. Survivors include his wife Karen of Shenandoah, Iowa; children, David Bartles of Tabor, Iowa, Janet Palmer and husband Jeff of Julian, Nebraska, Curtis Bartles and wife Jennifer of Des Moines, Iowa, and Lesa Wake and her husband Jeremy of Shenandoah, Iowa. Three sisters, Connie Dunkle of Fairfax, Missouri, Diana Kalkas of Shenandoah, Iowa, Jackie Sickler of Shenandoah, Iowa, and John Bartles of Marshalltown, Iowa; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Gary Fuller. Special music was "Amarillo By Morning" and "Proud To Be An American". Attending the memory register were Brian Blank and Jeremy Wake. Casket bearers were David Bartles, Curtis Bartles, Dee Mattly, Kip Kalkas, Dustin Kalkas and Erskin Kalkas. Military rites were accorded by the Iowa National Guard, 168th Company E Infantry Honor Guard. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Bartles, Wendell Lawrence - Wendell passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Graveside services will be held on Monday, February 22, at 2:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Chapel located at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials are being directed to the Wendell Bartles Memorial Fund.

Wendell Lawrence Bartles, son of Willis and Tressa (Aid) Bartles, was born on October 25, 1925 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 84 years.

Wendell lived in Shenandoah most of his life. He met Hazel Marie Turnbull and on October 20, 1945 they were united in marriage. They made their home in Shenandoah and were blessed with a set of twins, Ronnie Raye and Connie Faye.

Wendell worked at Mount Arbor Nurseries in Shenandoah for a few years. In 1950 he went to work at Dekalb Seeds Co. in Shenandoah. In 1962 they moved to Wheatridge, Colorado where they lived for the next 26 years. Wendell worked for Wilmore's Nurseries for a couple of years before going to work at the Colorado State School of Mines in Golden Colorado. He retired from the School in 1988. Upon retirement, Wendell and Hazel moved to Red Oak. Wendell kept busy in his shop, loving to build anything with wood and metal, a jack of all. He also greatly enjoyed any kind of yard work around the house. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and relatives.

Preceding Wendell in death were his parents, Willis and Tressa Bartles; loving wife of 60 years, Hazel Marie Bartles; sisters and brothers, Faye Sinclair, Darrell Bartles, Mae Hadden, Wilma Walker and Eldon Bartles.

Survivors include the twins, Ronnie Bartles and his wife Marsha of Red Oak, IA and Connie Faye Dalrymple and her husband Robert of Homestead, FL; four grandchildren, Jon Dalrymple, ZoeAnn Dalrymple, Kimberly Kay (Bartles) Merrick and husband Joshua, Stacey Marie (Bartles) Meckna and husband Thomas; nine great grandchildren, DeVonn Dalrymple and wife Heather, Megan and Tiffany Dalrymple, Cassidy Merrick, Emily Dalrymple, Ellie, Thomas and Parker Meckna; great-great granddaughter Aubrey Dalrymple; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Bateman, Barbara M. Bruner - Barbara M. (Bruner) Bateman was born on September 4, 1932 in Decatur County, Iowa, the daughter of Reatus William and Bessie M. (Manchester) Bruner. Barbara entered into the presence of the Lord on Friday, January 8, 2010 at her home in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Barbara’s family were tenet farmers who moved frequently when she was younger in order to support their family. Growing up Barbara lived in Decatur County, IA, Osceola, IA, Winterset, IA, Minburn, IA, Earlham, IA, Maxburg, IA, and finally in Essex, IA. Barbara graduated from Essex High School with the Class of 1952.

On May 22, 1964 she was united in marriage to Lyle A. Bateman at the Baptist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. The couple resided in Shenandoah for 8 years before moving to their farm in Rural Farragut. Sometime following Lyle’s passing Barbara moved back to Shenandoah.

Barbara was a hard working and fun-loving person. She worked for Union Carbide in Red Oak, IA from 1952-1953 and then for City National Bank in Shenandoah for 38 years until her retirement. In October of 2005, she decided to come out of retirement and worked at the Shenandoah Medical Center for an additional 4 years.

Barbara had a passion for helping others. She could often be seen taking people to doctors appointments, hair appointments, or to the grocery store. She loved to travel with her friends and collect angels. Barbara rarely missed an opportunity to have coffee with her friends. That time of fellowship was very important to her. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Roy Bruner, her parents, sisters Arvilla Preston and Betty Bruner, and a brother Otis “Bill” Bruner.

Those left to honor her memory include her brothers Charles Bruner and wife Joyce of Arvada, CO, James Bruner of Essex, IA, Elmer Bruner and wife Beverly of Sun City, AZ, and Don Bruner and wife Patti of Council Bluffs, IA, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of good friends.

Bauer, Loretta Anna Bertha Herzberg - Loretta Anna Bertha (Herzberg) Bauer, 84, a retired school secretary for District 11, died July 2, 2008, at home in Colorado Springs after a battle with cancer.
Her memorial service was at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, July 7, at Holly Cross Lutheran Church with Pastor Doug Brauner presiding. A reception followed in Hiller Hall. Burial was at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in a private ceremony.
Mrs. Bauer was born October 2, 1923, in Page County near Yorktown, Iowa, to Rudolph and Mary (Sump) Herzberg.
She was married February 19, 1960, to Melvin Bauer, who survives. Other survivors include three daughters: Cormin Harrell of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Laurna Herndon of Norwood, Colorado, and Kay Isaacs of Dalhart, Texas; three sons: J. Rudy Bauer of Chipita Park, Colorado, Richard Bauer and Jim Bauer, both of Colorado Springs; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew; and a sister, Martha Buckendahl of Des Moines, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Herzberg.
Mrs. Bauer lived in Garden City, Kansas, for 25 years before moving to Colorado Springs in 1972. During World War II she riveted at Beech Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. She was secretary for four years in Garden city for the YMCA and six years for the Colorado Springs YMCA. She then was a secretary for ten years at School District 11. She was a lifetime Lutheran, a church volunteer, a very active in aerobics, hiking, square and round dancing, as well as crocheting afghans for all her family.

One of Mrs. Bauer’s greatest gifts was the love and sense of community she imparted. She was happiest when bringing her family together to share celebrations, food and each other’s company. She also gave selflessly to the church, volunteering for many projects in her endless capacity for giving. Even towards the end when her health was failing, she voiced concerns about leaving church work undone. She had a truly selfless spirit and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Beach, John Douglas - John Douglas Beach, 45, son of Robert Beach, Sr. and Loy (Asbaugh) Beach, was born on February 20, 1962, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 12, 2007, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

His whole life was spent in the rural Shenandoah, Iowa area on the family farm. He attended the Shenandoah Community Schools, graduating from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1980. John loved the farm and returned to the family farm operation after attending Iowa State University. He was currently engaged in farming with his father. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. He enjoyed snow skiing, golfing, shooting pool and being with his friends.

Preceding John in death were his brother: Richard Beach; and grandparents: Leon and Elsie Beach and Lester and Mildred Ashbaugh. Survivors include his parents, Robert and Loy Beach of rural Shenandoah, IA; brother, Robert Beach, Jr. of rural Shenandoah, IA; sister, Mary Ann Brannen and her husband Terry of Shenandoah, IA; niece, Carrie Brannen; two nephews, Chris Beach and Tim Brannen; other relatives and many friends.

Services were held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 with Rev. Jim Gubser officiating. Burial took place at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Serving at the Memory Register was Carrie Brannen and Shana Beach. Ushers were Keith Dyche, Kevin Maher and Carl Martin. Casket Bearers were Bob Beach, Jr., Tim Brannen, Christopher Beach, Greg Franzen, Peter Weber, and Richard Dozier. Memorials may be directed to the Davis-Rodgers Chapter of FFA. Beach, Richard Alan - Richard Alan Beach, son of Robert E. and Loy (Ashbaugh) Beach, was born on September 25, 1949, in Shenandoah, Iowa. He passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at his home in Spring Hill, Kansas, at the age of 56.
Growing up in Shenandoah, Richard attended the Shenandoah Community Schools and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1967. He received his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University. Richard was an agronomist and had a career working in the agricultural chemical industry in the states of Iowa, Missouri and Kansas.
Survivors include his son, Christopher Beach of Lawrence, Kansas; Christopher’s mother, Pamela Beach of Overland Park, Kansas; his parents, Robert and Loy Beach of Shenandoah, Iowa; sister, Mary Ann Brannen and brothers, Robert, Jr. and John Beach, all of Shenandoah, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial services were held on Friday, March 17, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Chapel at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. James Gubser. Inurnment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Beecher, Karen Kay Dissmeyer - Karen Kay (Dissmeyer) Beecher was born on June 24, 1944 in Beatrice, Nebraska, the daughter of August Herman and Frauka Katherina (Baumfalk) Dissmeyer. Karen entered into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at her home.

Karen’s early years were spent in the Holmesville and Wymore, Nebraska area. She attended school in Holmesville and graduated from Holmesville High School with the Class of 1962. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she received her Bachelors Degree in Education in May of 1966. Upon college graduation she was united in marriage to Larry Alan Beecher on June 18, 1966 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wymore, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Elmwood and later moved to Shenandoah in the early 70’s.

During her working years Karen taught school in Nehawka before starting her family. Being a good and loving mother was of great importance to her. It was this reason, while her children were young she took time off of her career to be a wonderful stay at home mom. When the children grew older she began substitute teaching in Shenandoah. For the past 22 years she has been employed by Edward Jones as a Business Office Associate, a job she truly loved. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Shenandoah and the Shenandoah Historical Society where she served as a volunteer and was a board member.

Karen had a passion for gardening, animals, reading, and listening to Barry Manilow. All of her family members were in for a special treat when she would make her famous spaghetti and meatballs. Karen was a kind and compassionate woman who walked this earth with grace and dignity.

Those welcoming her into heaven were her beloved husband Larry, her parents, a brother Harold Dissmeyer, and a sister Shirley Stewart.

She is survived and loved by her children Dan Beecher and wife Mitsi and Cheryl Johnson and husband Kory; a granddaughter Nikki Beecher; brother Virgil Dissmeyer and wife Gerry; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Beery, Beryl Eugene - Beryl Eugene Beery was born February 26, 1927 to Ray Calhoon and Netha Marie (Bair) Beery on a farm near College Springs, Iowa. He graduated Amity High School, College Springs, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Following his service in the military he returned to Iowa and farmed and was a commercial ground applicator. He also did pest control the last ten years. Beryl was an outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing.
Beryl passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wendell, and infant sister.
He is survived by his children: son, Milo Beery and wife Tammie of Clarinda and daughter, Lisa L. Rogers of Evergreen, Colorado; grandchildren Mac Drake and husband Nick and their son Dominic David Drake; and Logan Rogers; Colton Beery, Colin Beery, and Jeremy Beery and wife Robin and their daughter, Piper Lynn Beery; brother Bob Beery and wife Edith of Clarinda, Iowa; and sister-in-law Phyllis Beery, Clarinda; significant other, Marlene Teply of Diagonal, Iowa; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Velma Belle (Stogdill) Boyer was born on January 30, 1937 in Thurman, Iowa, the daughter of Darrell M. and Eula (Baucom) Stogdill. Velma entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Velma's early years were spent in the Thurman area where she attended school and graduated with the Class of 1954. On September 18, 1954 she was united in marriage to Richard D. Boyer and to this union five children were born; Cheryl, Carol, Teresa, Rick and Vickie.
Velma was a stay at home mom until her children were raised. She then worked as a CNA and a Med-Aid for a number of years. She provided the same love and attention to her patients, as she did her family for all of those years.
She loved her family deeply and enjoyed caring for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards, puzzle books, collecting Victorian dolls and bears. She was baptized in the Church of Christ in Sidney, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and infant daughter Teresa, a sister Marjorie Mattox, and brothers Gilbert, Robert, Virgil, Richard, Lyle, Ronald, Marvin, Larry and Roy.

Boylan, Thelma Lucille Gudgel - Thelma Lucille (Gudgel) Boylan was born to Benjamin Franklin and Verna (Griffin) Gudgel on September 14, 1908 near Locust Grove in Fremont County. She attended grade school for 8 years at Hillsdale school, and continued her education in Shenandoah and Northboro and graduated with the Class of 1927. It was here that she met Karl Boylan. They were married on Mothers’ Day, May 9, 1937 in the parlor of her parents home, where her parents had also been married.
They lived in Karl’s parents home on the south edge of Northboro. Karl attended masonry school in Detroit, Michigan. When he wasn’t working as a mason, he and Thelma did wallpapering for people. In January of 1940, after their home burned, they moved to Boylan’s empty café building in Northboro. Karl enlisted in the Navy Seabees in November of 1942, and left for service in March of 1943. for Camp Perry, Virginia. Thelma traveled to Virginia, Rhode Island and California to be with Karl whenever it was possible. She worked at various wartime jobs. Traveling was a new life style for Thelma. She returned home to live with her parents when Karl was sent to the South Pacific in 1943.
After Karl’s return from the service they purchased Shorty Smith’s Gas Station. Karl built a new block garage and later added an office and bath. Thelma’s mother, Verna came to live with them in December of 1951, after the death of her husband Ben. Verna, Thelma and Karl operated the station and Karl continued to do masonry work. Verna died in 1979.
Karl and Thelma traveled with their Seabee friends to New York, New Jersey, Florida, California and many places in between. They made many friends all over the United States. Karl and Thelma celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 17, 1987 with an open house at the Northboro Town Hall. In 1994 they celebrated their 57th anniversary at the Garden View Care Center.
Thelma continued to operate the gas station after Karl’s passing in October of 1995 and remained in Northboro for over 50 years. She had an Appreciation Day for her customers and friends in May of 1996. In 2000 Thelma moved to Fair Oaks in Shenandoah. On September 14, 2008 Thelma celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at Fair Oaks.
Thelma was a member of the Northboro United Methodist Church, the Northboro Betterment, Pinochle Club and Bridge Club. She enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. Thelma was a collector of many things. She loved music boxes and made detailed scrapbooks from the many pictures she took.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Karl, brothers-in-law Glen Boylan and wife Mary and Don Boylan and wife Dorothy and a niece Donna Stewart.
Those left to honor her memory include her nephews Jerry Boylan and friend Janeen Harper of Blanchard and Carl Boylan and wife Margie of Shenandoah; nieces Betty Miller and husband Jon of Milwaukee, WI, Carol Ann Kurtz and husband Jim of Crystal Falls, MI and Sara Annan and husband Bill of Shenandoah and their families along with the family of Donna Stewart. She enjoyed all of her extended family and friends.
Funeral Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Northboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Buck Buckhahn officiating. Becky Parmenter and Ila Jean Carlson attended the memorial register while Howard Carlson and Gary Alger served as ushers. Karen Thompson served as the accompanist for the service. Special music included the congregational hymns "In The Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset". Serving as casket bearers were Ron Saye, Rusty Orme, Rick Apperson, Randy Farwell, Donnie McCoy and Doyle Parmenter. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Howard Carlson, Jerry Boylan, Carl Boylan, Bill Annan, Wilbur Sickman, John Bayless and Lyle Apperson. Burial followed in the Union Grove Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the Northboro United Methodist Church or the Northboro Betterment Fund in Thelma's honor.

Brannen, Frank Gerald - Frank Gerald Brannen, son of Gerald and Edith Amy Brannen, was born on May 19, 1926, in Denver, Colorado and entered into rest on January 12, 2008, at the Villisca Good Samaritan Center in Villisca, Iowa at the age of 81.

Frank spent his childhood years growing up in Denver, CO, Omaha, NE, Clarinda, IA, and Shenandoah, IA. Frank graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1944 and attended Creighton University for two years. Frank served in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1945.

On December 27, 1950, Frank was united in marriage to Frances Gater at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Northboro, IA. Frank began farming in 1948 after attending Creighton University and has been farming ever since. Frank also worked as a stockman. Frank belonged to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #88. He served as a Boy Scout Leader and also on the Fremont County Extension Council.

Frank enjoyed Amateur Radio W0DVS, radio controlled airplanes, traveling, Glenn Miller and Big Band music.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Gerald and Edith Brannen; stepfather, George Woodle; and sister-in-law, Katie Gater. He is survived by his wife, Frances Brannen of Northboro, IA; son, Larry Brannen and wife Donna of Shenandoah, IA; daughter, Terri Brannen of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; son, Greg Brannen and wife Debi of Spring Hill, TN; son, Mark Brannen and wife Kim of Wolsey, SD; son, Kevin Brannen of Shenandoah, IA; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. from the Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home. Words of comfort were given by Rev. Vern Smith. Betty Andersen attended the Memory Register. Casket Bearers were David Brannen, Mark Mitchell, Dan Kinsella, Dave Matheson, Mike Claybaugh, and Nicholas Matheson. Brau, Wilma J. - Wilma J. Brau, 66, of Harlingen, Texas, and formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. She was born April 4, 1942 at Montezuma, the daughter of Clarence and Hazel Maxwell Brau. She graduated from the Montezuma High School and William Penn College. She lived in Clarinda for many years and worked as a counselor at the State Mental Health Hospital in Clarinda until retiring.
Her family includes a sister, Joyce Parizek and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 29, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Roger Neumann officiating. Burial will follow in the Guernsey Cemetery at Guernsey, Iowa on the Brau family lot. Visitation was held Sunday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral chapel. Memorials may be made to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter.

Brechwald, Darlene Fulkerson - Darlene passed away on Friday, September 1, 2006, at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, following a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 82. Memorials are being directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Darlene Fulkerson Brechwald was born May 11, 1924 to Fairy (Collins) Fulkerson and Abe Fulkerson, in Shenandoah, Iowa. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1943.

She lived all her life in Shenandoah, working for Henry Field Seed and Nursery Company as a typist and file clerk for 38 years. She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church. She married DeLane Brechwald on August 7, 1976 in LasVegas, Nevada.

Preceding Darlene in death were her parents; brother, Harold Fulkerson; and her beloved husband DeLane (Butch) Brechwald. Darlene will be missed by all her family and friends.

Graveside services were held on Monday, September 11, 2006, at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Vaughn Livingston read a scripture. Laurie Johnson and other friends gave remembrances of Darlene. Special music was "Friends" and "I Did It My Way". Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements

Brechwald, DeLane Weston - DeLane Weston Brechwald, son of Emma Giese and Joseph Brechwald, was born at Holstein, Iowa on August 4, 1916. When he was 12 years old, his mother remarried and they moved to Shenandoah. Butch graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1934. After graduation he moved to Council Bluffs to work at his father’s butcher shop. Later he worked as a bookkeeper for a brewery in Omaha. He later moved to California where he worked as a secretary for the Douglas Aircraft Company. In 1941 he joined the Navy as a radioman on the USS Dawson, which was a convoy ship during World War II. After the war he returned to Shenandoah where he did bicycle repair later becoming an expert Locksmith. On August 7, 1976 he was united in marriage to Darlene Fulkerson in Las Vegas, Nevada. He retired in 1999 from his locksmith business, later working for Scharp Glass until failing health forced him to retire again in 2001. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 88 and the Amvets of Shenandoah. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his loving wife Darlene and many friends.
Graveside memorial services were held on Monday, January 16, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Chapel at Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Fred Pearrow and Rev. Vern Smith. Military rites were accorded by the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88 of Shenandoah. Inurnment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Bredensteiner, Lucille Kling - Lucille (Kling) Bredensteiner, 86, was born on March 29, 1921 in Clarinda, Iowa to Harry and Mabel (Hardee) Kling. She passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2008. Lucille grew up in Clarinda and attended school there. She graduated with a teacher’s certificate from the Normal Training course.

Lucille taught country school in East River Township at the Pleasant Hill school for several years. She was especially fond of helping children learn to read. Later she gave up teaching to work at the Clarinda Herald Journal.

In June 1947, Lucille and Emil (Slim) Bredensteiner were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Northboro, IA. They began their life together on the family farm near Westboro, Missouri. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Nancy Carol.

Lucille was baptized in the Methodist Church as a child. She later became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she attended faithfully as long as her health permitted.

Lucille was preceded in death by husband Emil in 1980; parents; two brothers; Byron and Albert; and one sister, Marjorie. She is survived by daughter; Nancy Middaugh and husband Steven of Hamburg, Iowa; and her very special granddaughter, Kristine. Other survivors included nieces, nephews, friends, and her dog Lucky.

Lucille will be remembered as a kind and gentle woman who was always willing to help someone who needed assistance. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed her life on the farm. As a dog lover, she took in many strays and would drive out of her way to feed an abandoned dog.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Northboro, Iowa. Words of Comfort were given by Pastor Ron Nelson. Organist was Steve Richardson. "Jesus Loves Me" was rendered by Soloist, Teri Emberton. Congregational Hymn was "Children of the Heavenly Father". Mary Beth Bredensteiner and Sharon Brown were in charge of the Memory Register. Caring for flowers were Blu Dow, Karen Michel, Dallas Prather, and Marie Tiemann. Ushers were Terry Rolf and Steve Bredensteiner. Casket Bearers were Eddie Bredensteiner, Shane Bredensteiner, Tim Bredensteiner, Mike Hamilton, Trevor Whipple, and Mike Kling. Honorary Casket Bearers were Gerald Bredensteiner, Stanley Brendensteiner, Ed Christensen, Larry Christensen, and Charles Kolb. Interment was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Northboro, Iowa. Memorials in Lucille's name are being directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Fairfax Community Hospital, and Page County Humane Society.

Bredensteiner, Violet Jeannette Cox - Violet Jeannette Cox was born March 29, 1913, in Pawnee City, Nebraska. She was the second oldest of ten children born to Cecil Dorn and Eva Mae (Jackson) Cox. Her nine brothers and sisters in order of birth were Velma Adaline, Lola Mae (Mrs. Leroy Stanley), Ollie Pearl, Clifford Raymond (Ray), Cecil Edward (Ed), Cora Nadine (Mrs.Rankin Dinwiddie), Ellis Alfred (Dude), Lloyde Allen (Tink) and Marvin Leroy.
Violet’s family moved to near Elmo, Missouri, when she was very young. Though the family was poor, she often related fond memories of her mothers daily baking of homemade bread, picking gooseberries for jelly, and a large garden. She continued the tradition of a large garden throughout her adult life until she was forced to discontinue it due to health a few years ago.
Violet attended high school in Northboro, Iowa, where she graduated in 1930. She looked forward each year to attending the NHS Alumni Banquet.
On March 19, 1939, Violet was united in marriage to Floyde Earnest Claus Bredensteiner. Prior to her marriage, she was a member of Locust Grove Church. After marriage, she was confirmed and became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she continued as an active member throughout her life.
Two children were born to Floyde and Violet. Alma Jeanette was born March 18, 1940. Gary Lee was born August 27, 1945. Alma married Ed Wilwerding on September 26, 1964, and became an instant mom to four children (Linda, Diane, Denny and Julie). Two more children were born to Ed and Alma (Joanne and Patricia). Alma resides in Harlan, Iowa. Gary married Sally Reed on February 27, 1965. Six children were born to Gary and Sally (Jeffrey, Heidi, Erin, Wendy, Alisa and Derek). Gary’s first marriage ended with divorce in 1986. Gary was married in 1995 to Cheryl Lichty Schroeder. Gary and Cheryl live in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband (Floyde) in 1988, son-in-law (Ed) in 2001, and all nine siblings and their spouses. She is survived by her two children; daughter-in-law; 15 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in rural Northboro. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Ron Nelson.

Bright, Lois Marie Oldham - Lois Marie Bright, daughter of Richard Breckinridge Oldham and Blanch Marie (Fahseler) Oldham, was born on June 21, 1935 at Harrisonville, Missouri. She passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 72 following a brief illness.

As a young girl, Lois and her family moved to northwest Missouri near Tarkio. She attended the Tarkio schools and graduated from Tarkio High School. On April 30, 1960 Lois was united in marriage to Richard Ray Bright at the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. Following their marriage they made their home in Shenandoah for three years before moving to Glenwood, Iowa and later lived in Fremont County, Iowa. They have resided at their current farm residence near Essex, Iowa since 1978. Lois and Richard raised three children; Tammy, Timothy and Terry. Lois was a member of the Faith Covenant Church in Essex. She loved going to yard sales and enjoyed collecting angels and angel memorabilia.

Preceding Lois in death were her parents; infant son, Rick and infant daughter, Vicki; sister, Betty Bright; and two brothers John and Richard Oldham, Jr.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Richard R. Bright of Essex, IA; daughter, Tammy Chatfield and Terry Glassinger of Essex, IA; and two sons, Tim Bright and Sue Midberry of Red Oak, IA and Terry Bright of Essex, IA; four grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Oldham of Arkansas and Arthur Oldham of Clarinda, IA; two sisters, Martha Bancroft and husband Harold of Essex, IA, and Glenna Stoll and husband Willard of Clarinda, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services were held from Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home in Shenandoah on Monday, December 17, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. Words of Comfort were given by Rev. Gary Fuller. Sheila McCoy was in charge of the Memory Register. Musical selections included "Daddy's Hands", "Holes In The Floor of Heaven", and "The Old Rugged Cross". Casket Bearers were Tim Bright, Terry Bright, Corey Bright, Joseph Chatfield, Dan Bright, Don Bright, Ron Bright, and Mike Williams. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. Broff, Naoma Barbara Savage Arvidson - Naoma Barbara Broff, 94, died on July 21, 2006, at Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa. Barbara was born July 31, 1911, to Eugenia L. Shultz and G. N. Savage in Pike City, Arkansas. She married Paul G. Arvidson of Shenandoah, Iowa in 1931, and moved to Mitchellville, Iowa, in 1936 where Paul worked at the WHO transmitter for eight years. They then moved to Bettendorf, Iowa, where Paul was chief engineer at WOC, Davenport, for 25 years. They retired to Shenandoah in 1969. Paul died in 1970. Barbara returned to her home town in Chillicothe, Missouri, in 1971. She married Harold Broff in 1973, and returned to Shenandoah. Harold and Paul graduated in the same class of high school in Shenandoah in 1921. Harold died from a stroke in 1980. Barbara enjoyed spending time with friends and family, attending doll festivals, collecting and restoring dolls, and working on various art projects including airbrush painting and ceramics.
Survivors include one son, Paul William Arvidson and his wife Jacqueline of Princeton, IA; granddaughter, Ericka Arvidson Raber, her husband Edward and their children, Meredith and Henry of Washington, IA; and several nieces and nephews and other relations.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Chapel in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pastor Ron Nelson gave the words of comfort. Casket bearers were Ron Oestmann, John Walter, John Wolfe and Vaughn Livingston. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Shenandoah. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Brooks, Beverly "Joan" Kemper - Beverly Joan Brooks, daughter of Herbert and Pearl (Ebert) Kemper, was born on July 21, 1931 in the Locust Grove Township, Fremont County, Iowa and passed away June 9, 2008 in Hamburg, Iowa at the age of 76.
Joan grew up in the Locust Grove and Northboro communities, attending the Lone Willow country school and graduating from Northboro High School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Westboro, Missouri.
On December 15, 1949, Joan was united in marriage with Robert Anderson at the home of her parents and to this union two sons were born, Terry and Gary. They lived on a farm near Northboro until Robert’s passing away and at that time she moved to Shenandoah, Iowa with her sons and worked at May’s Seed Co. for nine years. Joan had also driven a school bus at one time.
On January 2, 1982, Joan was united in marriage to Harold Brooks of rural Farragut, Iowa. They lived and farmed near Fisher Township south of Farragut. They were married 12 1/2 years. After Harold’s death, she continued to live on the farm until December 2006, when she moved to Holmes Apartments on Center Street in Shenandoah
Joan was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served on the church Altar Guild along with other church committees. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #88 of Shenandoah and was a Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary volunteer and previously a member of the Twin Nights Chapter of Eastern Star and Porter’s Lake Lutheran Center. She volunteered at the Shenandoah Blood Bank and was a member of the Centennial Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Robert who passed away November 7, 1972; husband Harold Brooks who passed away July 29, 1994. Joan is survived by her two sons Terry Anderson and wife Kathy of Coin, Iowa and Gary Anderson and wife Joanna of Shenandoah; grandchildren Robert and wife Bridget Anderson, Jay and wife Julie Anderson and Valerie Anderson and significant other Tim Myers; six great grandchildren, Paige Schebaum, Brayden Anderson, Brooklyn Myers, Keegan Anderson, Rhett Brooks and Peyton Collum; step children, Joyce and husband Larry Supernaw of Farragut, Bruce Brooks and wife Kathy of Farragut and Chuck Brooks and wife Claudia of Farragut; step grandchildren, Lance Brooks and wife Shaharra of Sorrento, LA, Kristy and husband Britton Collum of Edmond, OK, Amy and husband Levi London of Norman, OK, Curtis Brooks and fiancé Leslie Sandahl of Farragut, IA, Craig Brooks and fiancé Lesley Broyles of Farragut, IA; brother, Dale Kemper and wife Darlene of Hamburg, IA; a number of nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church of Westboro, Missouri on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Words of comfort were given by Pastor Richard Pearson. Maralee Prather and Bev Klepinger attended the memory register. Glenn and Barb Rolf cared for flowers. "Here I Am Lord" was sang by Darla Peregrin and Rawn Weston. Other musical selections included "Amazing Grace", "Angels Among Us", "Midnight Cry" and "Supper Time". Carol Sunderman was the organist. Ushers for the service were Don and Kathy Laumann. Casket bearers were Robert Anderson, Jay Anderson, Curtis Brooks, Craig Brooks, Kirk Kemper and Derrick Kemper. Interment was at St. John's Cemetery in Westboro, Missori. Memorials are being directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church at Westboro or to the Farragut United Methodist Church in Joan's name. Brown, Benjamin Whitney - Benjamin Whitney Brown was born on July 16, 1924 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Grover Whitney and Irene (Frink) Brown. Ben entered into eternal peace on Sunday, November 8, 2009 in Princeton, Minnesota, at the age of 85.

Ben attended school in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1942. Following graduation Ben served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corp. He was stationed at the Burma Theater in India. He served his country with pride until he was honorably discharged in 1945. He then returned to his studies at the University of Iowa Law School where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in the early 1950’s.

Following graduation from the University of Iowa, Ben entered into law practice with his father Judge Grover W. Brown. In 1968, Ben moved to Des Moines, Iowa and worked for the Iowa Department of Revenue, until his retirement in the early 1990’s.

On October 10, 1959 Ben was united in marriage to Diana Bentley in Rock Port, Missouri. The couple was blessed with two children Dana and Bentley. The couple divorced in 1968.

Ben was a member of the American Legion and the Iowa Bar Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church while residing in Shenandoah. Ben had a love for classical music, photography, and reading books and newspapers. Ben kept current on politics and took a “special” interest in the Democratic Party. He attended the first Wassail Bowl Stag event in 1950, which is held in Shenandoah each year in December. He only missed this event twice.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Lova Brown. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Dana Ragsdale and husband Robert (Bob) of Princeton, MN; son, Bentley Brown and wife Susan of Auburn, NE; grandchildren, Greg Hudson of Des Moines, IA and Hannah Brown of Auburn, NE; step-grandchildren Emily and Bailey Collins of Auburn, NE; brother Robert Grover (Bob) Brown of Clear Lake, IA and sister Evelyn Murphy and husband F. C, (Champ) of Wheaton, IL; three nieces; one nephew; other relatives and friends.
