D.A.R. ORGANIZED IN 1923
DISCONTINUE MEETING, 1933

The Sutherland chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was organized early in 1923. The chapter was named Martha Jordan after a relative of Mrs. Kittie Jordan, who had been prominent in the Revolutionary war period, this being a requirement of the national Organization that the local chapters be so named. Mrs. T.E. Doling was the first regent. After the death of Mrs. Doling, Miss Mattie Townsend became regent.

Charter members included: Mrs. T.E. Doling, Mrs. Rachel Briggs, Mrs. Fred Davis, Miss Mattie Townsend, Miss Lena Brady, Mrs. Kittie Jordan, Mrs. L,J. McCulla. Other members included Mrs. Lum Brown, Miss Grace Stoops, Miss Elizabeth Davis, Mrs. R.W. Less, Mrs. Vopal Seegar.

An annual affair of the organization was a colonial tea given by Miss Martha Townsend during the holidays. The organization sponsored the awarding of a historical medal each year to the pupil in the local school having the highest standing in U.S. history.

In 1933 owing to the fact that most of the members had become non-resident and there were not enough members to make up a quorum, the monthly meeting was discontinued. The chapter adjourned in good standing with the national organization and may resume their meetings whenever the required number of resident members make this possible. Miss Lena Brady was regent when the group discontinued meeting.
