Inman, Chester W. Born February 10, 1837; brother to Daniel W. last above. Married Kate Baker. Enlisted August 20, 1861, at Clarksville, in Company I, Ninth Iowa Infantry, Third Brigade, First Division, Fifteenth Corps; participated in battles of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, and others; wounded severely in thigh May 22, 1863 at Vicksburg; promoted First Lieutenant June 14, 1862; resigned February 15, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. Settled in O’Brien County September, 1866, section 26, Grant Township. Was superintendent of Schools, 1869; County Recorder, 1868 and 1869; County Treasurer, 1868 and 1869; County Supervisor, 1871 and 1872.

Settled in O’Brien County in 1880, section 1, Grant Township, later residing at Hartley. Member German Reformed Lutheran Church. Died March 3, 1896, and buried in Clay County, Iowa.

Jenkins, James C. Resides at Washta, Iowa; born November 20, 1837, at McCullin, Inver Parish, Scotland, a son of James and Jennie Scott Jenkins. Married Ann Neeley February 22, 1865; children: Jennie S., William R., Sarah Ann, James M., Alexander T., Sidney, Adellia, Maggie. Enlisted July 20, 1863, in New York City as coal passer on United States Steamer “Electric Spark” in the navy; was captured by Confederate ship Tallahassee and taken to Havana thence returned to New York on sailing vessel; later served on United States Steamship Baltic; in March 13, 1864, was at Fort de Russy, La.; was present in December, 1864, at the first bombardment of Fort Fisher with Gen. B. F. Butler in command; discharged at Brooklyn Navy Yard. Settled in county, 1881, section 13, Waterman Township. Member of Methodist Episcopal Church.

Settled in O’Brien County in March, 1871, section 20, Highland Township. Member of Board of Supervisors 1876 to 1878, 1894 to 1899; belongs to Kenyon Post No, 339, G. A, R., at Sanborn, Masonic Lodge and I. 0. 0. F. He voted to make county warrants worth par instead of fifty cents on the dollar.

Jordan, Stephen F. Born April 5, 1841, in Ohio, a brother of Samuel J. Jordan, last above. Married Tennah Hagaman September 20, 1866; children: F. H. and Ada M. Enlisted October 27, 1861, in Company F, Sixty-seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry; appointed corporal from date of enlistment; discharged June 12, 1862, for disability; engaged in battles at Kearnstown, Va., March 23, 1862; Strasburg, Va., March 27, 1862; Front Royal, Va., May 30, 1862; again enlisted May 2, 1864, in Company D, One Hundred and Thirtieth Ohio Infantry; appointed sergeant May 2, 1864; mustered out with company September 22, 1864. Settled in O’Brien County 1873, on southeast ¼ section 8, Summit Township. Died December 2, 1885. An early member of Kenyon Post No. 339, G. A. R., at Sanborn; S. F. Jordan Post No. 417, G.A. R., Primghar, Iowa, was named after him.

Judd, Demetrius B. Resides on section 36, Baker Township, O’Brien County, Iowa; born July 27, 1835, at Cleveland, Ohio; father, Obadiah B. (born at Syracuse, N. Y.); mother, Amelia M. (born at Hartford, Conn.). Married to Mary B. Adams; children: Frank D., Lillian, Belle, Howard and Hattie. Enlisted December 7,1863, at Cleveland, Ohio, in Company E, One Hundred Twenty-eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry; served as corporal; discharged July 13, 1865, at Columbus, Ohio. Kaestlen, Samuel. Born February 17, 1823, at Sennheim France. His father was born in Switzerland and his mother in France. Married Magdalena Newhart in 1860; children: Louisa and Samuel E. Upon death of his first wife he was again married to Magdalen Karsten June 6, 1883. Enlisted April 15, 1861, at Cleveland, Ohio, in Company K, Seventh Ohio Infantry; discharged February 2,1865. Settled in O’Brien County in 1880, at Hartley; died May 6,1895, at Cleveland, Ohio. Member of G. A. R. Post No. 451 at Hartley.

Kelley, Eleazer J. Resides at Mitchell, S. D.; born at Walnut, Ill.; father, E. Kelley (born 1808 at Unity, Me.); mother, Hannah (born 1820 at Hartford, Conn.). Married his wife, Maggie C., 1867; children: Jenny, Irvie, Charlie, Ira. Enlisted January 22, 1864; mustered in February 28, 1864, in Company D, Thirty-fourth Illinois Infantry, Second Brigade, Second Division, Fourteenth Corps; was a resident of Amboy, Ill., when he enlisted; discharged July 12, 1865, having served from Rocky Face to Savannah. Settled at Hartley in this county in 1895. Member G. A. R., Methodist Episcopal Church, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, W. R. C.; was mayor of Hartley 1896 and 1897.

Kelley, John W. Married Martha B. Boland; children: Anasthasia R., Mary E. and Kittie M. Enlisted August 29, 1862, in Company D, Ninetieth Illinois Infantry, his residence then being Joliet; served as first lieutenant; discharged June 6, 1865. Settled in O’Brien County, section 22, Grant Township, 1867 or 1868, later residing at Sanborn and Primghar; died April 1,1902, at Clarinda Iowa.

Kelly, Franklin Resides at Hartley; born January 31, 1827, at Seneca, N. Y.; father, James (born in Seneca County, New York) and mother Mary A. Anten (born in New Jersey). Married Nancy M. Bailey October 6, 1849; children: James and Mary A. (Thatcher) Enlisted September 1, 1864 at Racine Wis. in Company G, Forty-third Wisconsin Infantry; served as musician; in battle at Nashville and others; discharged June 2, 1865 at Milwaukee. Settled in Hartley, this county, in 1882. Member G. A. R. Post at Hartley; I. 0. 0. F.; mayor of Hartley, 1890 and 1891. Both he and his wife, each over 80 years of age, are still living at Hartley.

Kenyon, James. Formerly residing on southwest 1/4 section 20, Grant Township, but now deceased, is said to have been a survivor of the Union Army, serving in the Civil War.

Ker, John. Resides at Primghar; born May 20, 1830, Cork County, Ireland. Married Lorena Phelps by whom he had children as follows: Phoebe, Robert, Edward, May, Maude, and John; after death of first wife he married his present wife, Emily Graves, April 10, 1901. Enlisted April 9, 1862, at Fort Snelling, Minn., in Company D, Fourth Minnesota Infantry; served in battles at Farmington, Corinth, etc.; also in detached service in commissary department of Sherman army; discharged April 15, 1865, at Washington. Settled in O’Brien County in 1886, on southeast 1/4 section 15, Baker Township, later residing at Primghar.

Kimball, George W. Born 1841. Enlisted August 17, 1864, at Champion, N. Y., in Company H, One Hundred Eighty-sixth New York Infantry; wounded in action April 2,1865, before Petersburg, Va.; discharged June 5, 1865, at Washington. Formerly resided at Sanborn, Iowa, about the year 1882.

Kirk, Joseph M. Formerly residing on section 32, Floyd Township, is said to have been a soldier in the Civil War serving in the Union Army.

Enlisted June 4, 1861, at Waterloo in Company G, Ninth Iowa Infantry, First Brigade, First Division, Fifteenth Corps; served as corporal; battles: Sugar Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy, Savannah, Pea Ridge, Chickasaw Mountain, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Raleigh, N. C., Piney Creek, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, etc.; wounded in battle at Bentonville, N. C., March 21, 1865; discharged July 17, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. Settled in O’Brien County, Grant Township, April 15, 1869; homesteaded northeast ¼ section 8, Carroll Township, December 1872, later residing at Sheldon. His first wife died October 5, 1888. Was charter member of McKenzie Post, G. A. R., Sheldon, Iowa. He says the blank for list of battles he was in is too small.

Lane, Henry C. Born in Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1842, a son of Andrew and Mercy Lane. Married Florence May Lane in 1884; children: Constance, Clifford and Deronda. Enlisted August 6, 1861, at Middleton, in Company I, Twenty-fifth Illinois Infantry; served in battles of Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and others; served as corporal; discharged September 15, 1864, at Springfield, Ill. Settled in O’Brien County, 1872, residing at Sheldon; died May 4, 1903, and buried at Sheldon. Member of Unitarian Church and McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon. Langley, Edwin T. Resides at Santa Ana, Calif.; born May 3, 1843, at Meigsville, Ohio; father, John E. (born January 20, 1818, at Louden, Va.); mother, Degenira Murray (born October 19, 1844, in Pennsylvania). Married Lavancia E. Bloodgood January 15, 1867; one son, Clifford C. Enlisted October 12, 1861, at Marion, Iowa, in Company H, Fourteenth Iowa Infantry, serving in right wing of Sixteenth Army Corps; promoted to first sergeant April 1, 1863; served in battles at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Red River Expedition, Pleasant Hill, Kane River, Tupelo, Old Town Creek (at which battle, July 15, 1864, he was slightly wounded in foot but not off duty), Pilot Knob and running fight of two days, finishing at Leesburg; taken prisoner with General Prentice at Shiloh; in prison at Memphis, Mobile, Cahawba and Macon; paroled July 4,1862; discharged November 16, 1864, at Davenport, Iowa. Lasher, Wallace. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born April 10, 1836, at Andover, N. Y.; father, James Lasher, and mother, Lydia Slocum (Both born at Andover, N. Y.). Married present wife, Harriet Johnson Lasher, in July, 1895; by his first wife, Lucinda, he had children as follows: James, Charles and Jefferson. Enlisted August 15, 1861, at Augusta, Ill., in Company B, Seventh Missouri Cavalry, serving in battles of Lexington, Mo., Independence, Mo., Boonville, Mo., and numerous skirmishes; discharged August 27, 1862, at Camp Berton, Mo. Lemburg, D. H. Resides at Lynd, Minn.; born 1835. Enlisted August 16, 1861, in Company E, Second Iowa Cavalry; promoted to saddler October 1, 1864; discharged September, 19, 1865, at Selma, Ala. Formerly member of E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R., at Sutherland, Iowa, where he resided for a number of years, about 1885 to 1905.

Leonard, Elias. Born 1845 in Ohio. Enlisted while living at Cherry Grove, December 30, 1863, in Company D, Forty-sixth Illinois Infantry; muster roll shows name spelled “Lenart”; discharged January 20, 1866. Formerly resided at Sanborn, this county, where he was a member of Kenyon Post No. 339, G. A. R., about 1888.

Lett, T.J. Born 1839 at New Brighton, Pa. Enlisted September 7, 1861, at Cicero, Ill., in Company F, Eighth Illinois Cavalry serving as corporal; after expiration of term re-enlisted as veteran; also served as bugler; engaged in battles Antietam Martinsburg etc.; discharged July 17, 1865, at Burton Barracks, Mo. Formerly resided at Sheldon, where he was a member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., about 1878.

Enlisted at Coshocton, Ohio, January 13, 1864, in Company D, Fifty-first Ohio Infantry, Second Brigade, First Division, Fourth Corps; served in battles Buzzard’s Roost. Resaca, Lost Mountain, Atlanta, and Jonesboro, Ga.: discharged May 24, 1865. Settled in O’Brien County, 1871, residing in Grant Township, six miles east of present site of Primghar. He was a member and deacon in the Congregational Church presided over by Rev. Mr. Covey on section 6, Grant Township.

Long, Alexander Q. Born September 14, 1843, at Effingham, Ill.; father, James M. (born in Virginia); mother, Rachel Mills (born in Virginia). Married Rachel A. Johnson October 25, 1865; children: William, George and Daisy. Enlisted April 18, 1861, at Cedar Rapids in Company A, First Iowa Infantry; re-enlisted January 1, 1864, in Company K, Eleventh Iowa Infantry; wounded in forehead at Wilson Creek, Mo., and a prisoner in Andersonville five months; discharged July 15, 1865. Settled in O’Brien County in 1883, residing in Highland Township; Sanborn, Center Township, and Suther­land. Died April 6, 1889, and was buried at Sutherland. Member of I. 0. 0. F. at Dayton, Nev.; A. 0. U. W. at Virginia City, Nev., and E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R., at Sutherland. He was taken prisoner July 22, 1864.

Louthan, George W. Resides at Sutherland, Iowa; born in Jefferson County, Virginia; father, William W. (born in Scotland). Married Abigail E. Neeley January 17, 1857. Enlisted August 21, 1862, in Company E, Twenty-fourth Iowa Infantry; served in battles at Vicksburg, Sabine Cross Roads, Winchester, Red River Expedition, Champion Hill, Jackson, Cedar Creek and Fort Gibson; discharged at Savannah, Ga., July 17, 1865. Settled in O’Brien County in 1878. Died April 19, 1895, and buried at Waterman Cemetery, Sutherland. Member of I. 0. 0. F., A. F. & A. M. and G. A. R. Post. Sutherland.

Luce, William W. Enlisted May 22, 1863, in Company A, Fifth Wisconsin Infantry as musician; discharged June 10, 1864. Came to the county about 1870, residing in Baker Township.

Luce, Benjamin F. H. Resides at Edmonds, Wash.; born May 16, 1824, at Rochester, N. Y.; son of Cheney and Polly Luce. Married Julia Rost October 29, 1846; children: Sarah J., W. W., J. N. and Clara L. Enlisted June 20, 1861, at Wausau, in Company A, Fifth Wisconsin Infantry, Hancock’s Brigade, Sixth Army Corps; served as drum major on noncommissioned staff; first served as drummer and promoted to second principal musician May 1, 1863; served in battles at Williamsburg, Potomac Station, Fredericksburg, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Gettysburg, Wilderness; wounded in latter battle; discharged June 16, 1864. Settled in O’Brien County in 1869, homesteading northeast 1/4 section 36, Floyd Township. Local preacher in Methodist Episcopal Church. Member of Stevens Post No. 1, G. A. R., at Seattle.

Lyle, William. Born in 1836 in New York State; father born in Scotland, and mother in New York. Enlisted October 31, 1861, at West Camden to serve three years in Company B, Ninety-third New York Infantry; discharged November 11, 1862, at Albany, N. Y. for disability. Settled in this county in 1870, residing on southeast 1/4 section 2, Floyd Township. Member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R, Sheldon.

Lyon, Asher. Resides at Redfield, Iowa; born May 14, 1840, in Ingham County, Michigan; father, Chalon (born 1805 in New Jersey), mother, Hannah Barr (born March 19, 1820, in New York). Married Margaret L. Tice December 24, 1869; children: Anna J., Charles F. B. and Anna L. B., Enlisted October 30, 1861, in Company G, Thirteenth Michigan Infantry, Wood’s Division, Buell’s Corps; served as Corporal; battles: Pittsburg Landing, Corinth, Stevenson, Ala.; was shot in head and legs, six wounds in all, by bushwhackers, near Stevenson, on September 1, 1862; discharged February 25, 1863, at Nashville, Tenn. Settled in O’Brien County June 20, 1871, on northwest 1/4 section 10, Highland Township. Member Marshall Post No. 43, G. A. R., Redfield, Iowa. Had two brothers, Robert and Charles, in Civil War.

Lyons, Mortimer. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born in New York City November 18, 1840; father, Israel (born 1814, Elizabeth, N. J.), mother, Frances (born 1819). Married wife, Rose I., February 27, 1878. Enlisted at Columbus, Ohio, August 31, 1861, in the One Hundred Eighty-fifth Ohio Infantry; served in battle at Mill Spring, KY.; discharged at Louisville, Ky., May 18, 1862; re-enlisted in Eighteenth United States Infantry, First Battalion, and discharged September 26, 1865. Member of G. A. R. Post No. 403 at Williamsburg, Iowa.

Lyons, George H. Formerly residing at Paullina. Enlisted August 13, 1862, in First Wisconsin Cavalry; discharged July 19, 1865.

Mack, Squire. Residing at Spencer, Iowa, formerly residing on east 1/2 northeast 1/4 section 30, Grant Township; is said to have been a soldier in the Civil War serving in the Union Army; refuses to answer or give company, regiment, or other facts. Was an early settler in Grant Township, O’Brien County.

Manly, Joseph. Born April 1, 1837. in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Married Olive Salisbury July 4, 1860; children: Lottie T., William J., Elon D., Junis N.. John E. and Edwin S. Enlisted February 28, 1865, at Boscobel, Wis., in Company D, Eleventh Wisconsin Infantry; discharged September 4, 1865, at Madison, Wis. Settled in county in June, 1870, on southwest 1/4 section 6, Liberty Township. Died September 9, 1890, and was buried in Liberty Township Cemetery.

Marks, William. Formerly residing in Section 20, Grant Township; is said to have been a soldier in the Civil War, serving in Union Army. There was a William Marks in Company G, Tenth Iowa, also in Company H, Twenty-sixth Iowa Infantry.

Markham, Isaac E. Born in 1845 in New York. Enlisted December 17, 1864, in Company E, Forty-fourth Wisconsin Infantry; discharged July 29, 1865, at Prairie du Chien. Formerly resided at Sheldon and was a member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., about 1885.

Marsh, Jasper N. Resides at Primghar, Iowa; born September 8, 1843, at Grafton, Ill.; father, Ephraim (born July 9, 1789, at Manchester, Mass.), mother, Mary Houcks (born in 1800 at Covington, Ky.). Married Sarah Johnson December 31, 1881; children: Jasper N., Elmer B., William N., Sarah E., Johnnie and Elsie May. Enlisted October 31, 1863, at Mount Carroll, Ill., in Company C, Ninety-second Illinois Mounted Infantry, Second Brigade. First Division. under Kilpatrick; later transferred to Company C, Sixty-fifth Illinois Infantry; served in skirmishes at Atlanta and Aiken, S. C.; surrounded at both places but escaped; went around the Rebel army under Hood at Atlanta with Kilpatrick and cut their communications; discharged July 13, 1865, at Greensboro, N. C. Settled in O’Brien County August 21, 1889, in Center Township, later residing at Primghar. Member of S. F. Jordan Post No. 417, G. A. R., at Primghar. Had a brother in same company and father and brother-in-law were in War of 1812

Marshall, L. D. Born in 1844 in Louisa County, Iowa. Enlisted July 1, 1862, at Council Bluffs, in Company E, Twenty-third Iowa Infantry; transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps February 16, 1864; discharged July 6, 1865, at Wilmington, Del. Member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon.

Marston, James. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born in 1837, in Maine; parents, S. R. and Arind Marston (born in Maine). Married wife, Margaret, 1865; children: Frankie and Eugene. Enlisted May 17, 1864, at Boscobel, Wis., Company E, Forty-first Wisconsin Infantry; discharged September 23, 1864, at Milwaukee. Settled in county in 1872.

Martin, James P. Resides at Sutherland, Iowa; born November 10, 1847, in Aberdeen, Scotland; father, William (born December 25, 1796), and mother, Mary Lumsden (born July 16, 1792), both being born at Aberdeen. Married Mary Brady August 30, 1870; children: Fred L., William R., Olive F., Clyde A., Mary A., Elsie L., James B. and Lora B. Enlisted September 22, 1864, in Company H, First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, Twenty-second Army Corps, Eastern Division; suffers from deafness incurred in service; discharged June 26, 1865, at Fort Lyon, Va. Settled in O’Brien County November 16, 1887, in Waterman Township. Member Masonic Lodge; Yeoman; Homestead; E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R. Had four brothers in the army: William, in Company E. Thirtieth Wisconsin Infantry: Samuel, in same company; John C., in Battery H, First Wisconsin Artillery; George F., in first call for troops. Samuel died in service.

Martin, Robert. Born January 12, 1844, a son of Joseph and Jane Mitchell Martin. Married Mary B. Allison November 15, 1870. Scott A. is the only child. Enlisted June 16, 1863, at Pittsburg, Pa., Company H, Fifth Pennsylvania Artillery: appointed Corporal September 3, 1864, when he re-enlisted; discharged June 30, 1865, at Vienna, Va. Settled in O’Brien County March, 1882, at Sheldon. Died February 24, 1905, at Sheldon. Member McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., and K. of P., Sheldon.

Mason, James B. Married to Maria Wilcox March 22, 1865; children: Fred, Susan, Everett, John, Charlie, Roy, Bernice, Stella, Gladys. Enlisted August 19, 1861, Company F, Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry; saw service in battles of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Chalk Bluffs, Siege of Vicksburg, Sugar Creek, Springfield, Newton, Neosha, King’s River, Van Buren and others; discharged September 29, 1864, at Chicago. Settled in O’Brien County April, 1881, in Liberty Township. Member of Masonic bodies, including Knights Templar.

Matott, Francis. Born August 14, 1825, in Champlain, New York; his father bore the same name. Married Mary Bushore September 8, 1846; children: Frank, Joseph, Mary and Andrew. Enlisted at Valparaiso, Indiana, August 18, 1862, in Company C, Ninety-ninth Indiana Infantry; discharged June 5, 1865. Settled in Center Township, O’Brien County, in 1871. Died June 13, 1900, in Dakota City, Iowa.

Matott, Frank. Born in 1848 in Vermont. Enlisted May 27, 1864, in Company C, One Hundred and Thirty-eighth Indiana Infantry; discharged September 30, 1864. Settled in county on northeast 1/4 section 10, Center Township, in 1871. Member Kenyon Post No. 339, G. A. R., at Sanborn.

McArdle, Bernard. Born in 1845 in Ireland. Enlisted October 17, 1864, in Company I, Seventh Wisconsin Infantry; was wounded during his army service; discharged July 3, 1865. Formerly member Kenyon Post, G. A. R., at Sanborn. Came to O’Brien County about 1882.

McBath, Thomas. Resides near Sutherland, Iowa; born in Center County, Pennsylvania; father, William (born in same county 1806); mother, Lucetta Coble (born in Berkshire County, Pennsylvania). Married to Angelina Musleman March 14, 1878. Enlisted August 22, 1862, at State College, Pennsylvania, in Company C, One Hundred and Forty-eighth Pennsylvania Infantry, First Brigade, First Division, Second Corps; served in battles of Chancellorsville, Haymarket, Gettysburg, Auburn Mills, Bristol, Kelley Ford, Wilderness, Deep Bottom; wounded five times; severely wounded at Deep Bottom, Virginia, August 14, 1864; transferred to Third Company, Second Batallion Veteran Reserve Corps; discharged August 5, 1865, at Washington, D. C., on account of disability. Settled in O’Brien County, 1870, Grant Township. Member of G. A. R. Post at Sutherland; wife is a member of the W. R. C.

McBroom, John D. Born April 16, 1834, in St. Lawrence County, New York; father, John, and mother, Jane Dean (both born in Ireland). Married to Lucy Hill May 3, 1859; children: Walter Hill, Sophia, Isadore and Charles Sheridan. Enlisted October 16, 1861, while residing at Russell, New York, in Company L Ninth New York Cavalry, Banks Division; made Sergeant November 2, 1861, and transferred to Company K, One Hundred and Sixth New York Infantry, April 9, 1862; served as Captain of Company K, serving with the Army of the Potomac at Peninsula, Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, Cold Harbor, Wilderness and many other engagements; received gunshot wound through left arm at battle of Cold Harbor; received his commission as First Lieutenant August 27, 1862, and as Captain January 29, 1863; discharged January 13, 1865, at Washington, D. C. Settled in O’Brien County at Sheldon, March 1, 1901. Died May 11, 1908, and was buried at St. James, Minnesota. Was Chaplain of One Hundred and Sixth New York for two years. Member G. A. R. Post at Sheldon, and Commander for two years; member Masonic Lodge. Pastor Methodist Episcopal Church at Edgerton, Jackson and Bigelow, Minnesota.

McCandless, John C. Settled in the county on east 1/2 of northeast 1/4 section 18, Grant Township, in 1869, and is said to have been a soldier in the Civil War, serving in the Union Army.

McClellan, Marcellus G. Born in 1827, in Erie County, Pennsylvania; father, Henry McClellan (born in Pennsylvania). Married to Rachel Brush October 22, 1852; children: E. H., Nettie, Grace, William and two that died in infancy. Enlisted as Sergeant August 30, 1864, in Company L, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh New York Infantry; was in service till mustered out on June 9, 1865, near Bladensberg, Maryland. Settled in O’Brien County in 1872, homesteaded northeast 1/4 section 10, Carroll Township; removed to Sheldon, in 1883, where he died March 15, 1889. He was a charter member of the Congregational Church and a member of the G. A. R. Post at Sheldon.

McCormack, Joseph E. Formerly resided at Sanborn about 1893. Enlisted August 2, 1862, at Belvidere, in Company G, Ninety-fifth Illinois; discharged August 17, 1865.

McCulla, Lewis J. Resides near Sutherland, Iowa; born September 20, 1842, at Montreal, Canada; father, John (born in Scotland), mother, Elizabeth Livey. Married Mary A. Coleman September 23, 1873; children: Walter P., Carrie E., Ben B., Roy, Thomas, Henry, Mary E., Asa L., Sam Alfred. Enlisted August 16, 1861, at Muscatine in Company H, Eleventh Iowa Infantry, Crocker’s Brigade, McArthur’s Division, Seventeenth Corps; re-enlisted January 1, 1864, in Company C, First Missouri Light Artillery; served in battles of Shiloh, Corinth (both seige and battle), Meader Station, Siege of Vicksburg, Atlanta Campaign, Kenesaw Mountain; taken prisoner September 8, 1864; mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, July 15, 1865. Settled south of present site of Sutherland, just across the line in Cherokee County, in 1870, and lives at the same place now. Member G. A. R. at Sutherland, and gets his mail there.

Settled in O’Brien County May, 1870, on southeast 1/4 of section 36, Center Township. Died February 27, 1907, and buried at Hartley. Member of Presbyterian Church and Hartley Post G. A. R.

McElwain, Oscar. Resides near Archer, Iowa; born September 17, 1845, at Stanford, Vermont; father, Nicholas (born in Massachusetts). mother. Cynthia Whitcome (born in Vermont). Married Marietta Morrow February 24, 1869; children: Frank, Alfred, LeRoy and Eva. Enlisted January 2, 1864, at Millersberg, in Company I, Twenty-eighth Iowa Infantry, First Division, Nineteenth Corps; served in battles of Sabine Cross Roads, Cane River, Middle Bayou, Yellow Bayou, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek; discharged August 3, 1865, at Savannah, Georgia. Settled in O'Brien County April 1. 1869.

McLaren, Alfred P. Born September 29, 1844, in New York state; father, Peter (born in New York in 1808), mother, Nancy Gillespie (born in New York in 1813). Married to Emily A. Waterman November 2, 1873; children: Orrin P., Nina G.. Raymond A., Wayne W., Earl G., A. Frances and W. Bruce. Enlisted December 17, 1863, at Grand Rapids, in Company M, First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics; served during Sherman’s March to the Sea in all the engagements; discharged September 22, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee. Settled in O’Brien County May 6, 1870, on section 30, Center Township. Died February 14, 1908, at Sioux City, Iowa. Member G. A. R.

McMaster, Smedley H. Resides at Kimbrae, Minnesota; born April 3,1840; father, Harvey (born in Massachusetts), mother, Alma (born in Vermont) Married wife, Edna M., February 28, 1860. Enlisted August 16, 1862, at McGregor, Iowa, in Company B, First Iowa Cavalry; served in battle of Prairie Grove; discharged May 14, 1863, at Mount Grove, Mo. Settled in O’Brien County in 1887 at Hartley. Member of Methodist Episcopal Church and A. F. & A. M., at Fulda, Minnesota.

McMillan,J. E. Born in 1839, in Madison County, Ohio. Enlisted September 28, 1861, in Company E, Fourteenth Iowa Infantry; received severe gunshot wound in hip at Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6. 1862; discharged October 25, 1862, at Keokuk, Iowa. Member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon. Came to the county in 1871, residing on southwest 1/4 of section 8, Carroll Township.

McOmber, George A. Resides at Gage, Oklahoma. Was County Sheriff of O’Brien County in 1871, and is said to have been a soldier in the Civil War, serving in the Union Army. A brother of Ezra W. McOmber next below.

McOmber, Ezra W. Resides at Primghar, Iowa; born February 12, 1839, at Providence, near Saratoga, New York; father, Joseph McOmber (born in 1805 in Saratoga County, New York), mother, Betsey Austin (born in 1806 in Saratoga County). Married Anna Maria Gould December 15, 1864; children: Margaret, Samuel, Adrian. Enlisted September 1, 1862, at Saratoga, New York, in Company A, Seventy-seventh New York Infantry, Third Brigade, Second Division, Sixth Army Corps; wounded at Antietam, September 17, 1862; served in battles of Culpepper Court House, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Second Battle of Bull Run; wounded at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863; was discharged from McDougal Hospital, New York, on account of his wounds, December 14, 1863. Settled in this county March 19, 1869, homesteading land on section 12, Waterman Township; has resided in county continuously since. Died January 25, 1909, and was buried at Primghar; was serving as commander of S. F. Jordan Post, No. 417, G. A. R., at Primghar, when he died.

Meier, William. Resides at Calumet, Iowa; born September 16, 1844, at Lippe, Detmold, Germany; father, Herman, and mother, Wilhelmina Schueremeier. Married Johanna Hickman January 5, 1867; children: George H., Henry A., Edward W. and August F. Enlisted December 14, 1863, in Company H, Thirteenth Iowa Infantry, Crocker’s Third Brigade, Seventeenth Corps; served in battles at Atlanta, Kenesaw Mountain, Kingston, N. C.; contracted fever and ague and rheumatism at Atlanta; received sunstroke on march from Raleigh to Petersburg, Virginia; discharged July 21, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. Settled in O’Brien County March, 1884. Member Evangelical Church, Calumet, and E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R., at Sutherland.

Mennig, George. Born in 1842 in Pennsylvania; parents born in Germany. Enlisted April 13, 1861, in Company B, Second Iowa Infantry; wounded slightly February 15, 1862, at Fort Donelson, Tennessee; promoted to Sixth Corporal May 1, 1862; Fifth Corporal January 1, 1863, and Third Corporal March 1, 1863; re-enlisted October 4, 1864, in Company F, Tenth Iowa Infantry; discharged April 28, 1864, at Pulaski, Tennessee, to date June 28, 1865 under provisions of Act of Congress approved July 5, 1884. Settled on section 18, Carroll Township, in 1870, homesteading southeast 1/4 and lives there now. Member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon, Iowa.

Merrill, James M. Born September 2, 1846, at Keene, New York; father, James Merrill, and Mother, Orinda McKenzie Merrill. Married Ophelia D. Lindsay May 2, 1882. Enlisted December 28, 1863, in Company C, One Hundred and Eighteenth New York Infantry; served also in the Ninety-sixth New York Infantry, to which regiment he was transferred June 13, 1865; served in the battles of Petersburg, Drury’s Bluff, Fort Harrison, Fair Oaks, Carter, Cold Harbor, Yorktown, Williamsburg. Long Bridge, Jones Ford, Malvern Hill, Charles City, Cross Roads and campaign resulting in the fall of Richmond; discharged February 6, 1866, at City Point, Va. Settled in O’Brien County in 1871, residing near Sheldon. Died May 28, 1904, and was buried at Sheldon.

Merwin, Charles W. Resides at Sanborn, Iowa; born January 6, 1844, at Portageville, New York; father, David (born August 4, 1791, in Connecticut), mother, Almira Worden (born in 1820 in New York). Married Margaret Elston January 17, 1864; children: Wm. D. and Frank. Married second wife, Tennah Jordan, November 16, 1897. Enlisted October 8, 1864, in Company C, Forty-second Illinois Infantry, Third Brigade, Second Division, Fourth Corps; served in battle of Springhill, Tennessee, November 29, 1864; was shot through side of head and sent to hospital at Nashville, then to Jeffersonville, Indiana, then to Keokuk, Iowa; released from hospital March 10, 1865, rejoining company in Alabama; discharged October 8, 1865, at New Orleans. Settled in O’Brien County April 20, 1880, residing in Grant Township and later in Sanborn. Member of Kenyon Post, No. 339, at Sanborn, and I. O. O. F.

Messer, Erwin Barker. Resides at Hartley, Iowa; born August 24, 1838, at Leicester, Vermont, a son of James S. and Julia Ann Messer (both of whom were born in Vermont). Married Eliza A. Howell September 25, 1862; children: Ida L. and Jay S. Enlisted August 19, 1861, at Libertyville as Captain Company F, Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry, Army of the Frontier, and also Thirteenth and Nineteenth Army Corps; in May, 1861, received thirty days in camp of instruction under state service; also served as Lieutenant Colonel of One Hundred and Fifty-sixth Illinois Infantry; served in battles of Sugar Creek, Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Newtonia, Mo.; Chalk Bluff, Mo., and Vicksburg; the regiment compaigned all the way and back and forth from Booneville, Mo., to Brownsville, Tex, carrying the old flag from 16,000 to 18,000 miles; resigned as Captain of the Thirty-seventh Illinois June 25, 1864, serving as Lieutenant-Colonel of the One Hundred and Fifty-sixth Illinois Infantry till September 25, 1865. Mrs. Messer is a member of the W. R. C.. at Hartley. Colonel Messer is now engaged in the hardware business at Hartley.

Messer, Edwin P. Resides at Sheldon; born August 24, 1838, at Leicester, Vermont, being a twin brother of Erwin B., last above: father, James S. (born in Leicester, Vermont, 1811), mother, Julia A. Barker (born Leicester, Vermont, 1813). Married Celeste French March 24, 1864. Enlisted at Libertyville, Illinois, August 19, 1861, in Company F, Thirty-seventh Illinois Infantry, Army of Frontier, as First Lieutenant; promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant January 4, 1864; served in battles at Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Vicksburg and Yazoo City; at Brownsville, Texas, winter of 1863-1864; resigned October 15, 1864. and discharged at Memphis, Tennessee. Settled in O’Brien County in 1882, first residing at Sutherland and later at Sheldon. Member of Christian Science Church; Masonic Lodge (up to and including Knight Templar degrees); member McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R., at Sheldon; was an original member of E. O. C. Ord Post, G. A. R., at Sutherland.

Metcalf, John. Born February 9, 1842, at Yorkshire, England, a son of Thomas and Mary Harker Metcalf (both of whom were born in Yorkshire). First wife, Mary A. Simpson, by whom he had three children: Wilbert C., Nettie V. and John T. First wife died in September, 1892, and he married Belle Raw January 1, 1894; children of this marriage: Lucile and Marion. Enlisted March 2, 1865, at Council Hill, in Company A, Ninety-sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Fourth Army Corps; transferred to Company B, Twenty-first Illinois Infantry, March 2, 1865; went with regiment to East Tennessee and was with Sherman when war closed; discharged December 16, 1865, at San Antonio, Texas. Settled in O'Brien County January 1. 1884, at Paullina, where he was for years engaged in banking and grain and live stock business. Mr. Metcalf was one of the heaviest real estate owners in the county and always took an active part in promoting the general good of the community; liberal in his benevolences, he has been one of the best supporters of Morning Side College at Sioux City. He died November 28. 1908, and was buried at Paullina.

Miller, Andrew. Formerly resided at Sheldon and was a member of McKenzie Post No. 72, G. A. R. The post records are deficient and fail to show his army service.

Miller, John B. Born in Lake County, Illinois. Enlisted March 9, 1862, at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, in Company C, Fifth Minnesota Infantry, Second Brigade, Third Division, Fifteenth Army Corps: served at Tupelo, Corinth, Jackson, Vicksburg, Nashville, Spanish Fort and many others; discharged March 5, 1865. Formerly resided at Sheldon and was a member of McKenzie Post, No. 72, G. A. R. He was wounded at Tupelo, Mississippi.

Miller, Leonard. Resides at Livingston, Wisconsin; born April 8,1842, in Cayuga County, New York; father, Ezra B. (born August 18, 1818, in Cayuga County, New York), mother, Nancy Hyde (born June, 1821, at Sterling Center, New York). Married Alice A. McKinney December 12, 1883; children: Pearl J., E. P., Thelma, Lois and a stepdaughter, Hattie McKinney. Enlisted April 29, 1861, at Kilbourne City, Wisconsin, in Company D, Fourth Wisconsin Cavalry, Nineteenth Corps, Department of Southwest; this was one of the first three regiments to enter New Orleans; served in battles of Grand Gulf, Baton Rouge, New Stone, rear Port Hudson, Pattersonville, La., Alexander, and all the charges and sieges of Port Hudson under Banks. Taken prisoner Jan. 11, 1864, and in prison at Cahawba, Andersonville, Charleston and Florence, North Carolina; nearly died of scurvy; escaped and reached Sherman’s Army at Columbia, South Carolina, February 17, 1865, after 13 months and 6 days in prison; discharged March 29, 1865, at Madison, Wisconsin. Settled in O’Brien County April 17, 1885, residing at Hartley. Was Mayor of Hartley in 1892 and 1894. Member of Hartley Post, G. A. R.

Mills, Wilbur F. Resides at Sanborn, Iowa; born at Levant, Penobscot County, Maine; father, Stephen (born at Saco, Maine), mother, Sarah A. Mills (born in Manchester, New Hampshire). Married wife, Mary C., August 16, 1865; children: Albert M., Evelyn S., William D., Lulu, George and Harry. Enlisted August 9,1862, at Iowa City, in Company I, Twenty-second Iowa Infantry, Third Brigade, Second Division, Thirteenth Army Corps; transferred to Nineteenth Corps, June, 1864, at New Orleans; served in battles of Winchester, Savannah, Cedar Creek, Newburn, North Carolina, Shenandoah and City Point; detailed in Quartermaster’s Department most of time; suffered from chronic diarrhea; furlough at Matagorda Island, his weight having been reduced from 160 to 100 pounds; discharged July 25, 1865, at Savannah, Georgia. Settled in O’Brien County, 1880, at Sanborn. Member of G. A. R. Post at Sanborn; had four brothers in the Sixth Maine Infantry.

Monroe, Charles. Born May 5, 1815, in New York. Married in 1845; children: Chibura A., Mary and Alonzo. Enlisted December 14, 1861, at Watama, Wisconsin, in Eighth Battery Wisconsin Light Artillery; discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, on account of disability, on October 22, 1862. Settled in this county, at Old O’Brien, 1869. Died July 12, 1886, and was buried at Peterson, Iowa. Was a member of the Baptist Church.

Montis, N. Harrison. Born in 1835 in Ohio; father was born in Germany and mother in Pennsylvania. Enlisted January 11, 1865, at Mason City, Iowa, in Company I, Second Iowa Cavalry; taken sick and sent to General Hospital at Huntsville, Alabama, August 2, 1865; discharged September 19, 1865, at Selma, Alabama. Settled in O’Brien County at Sheldon.

Montzheimer, Julius. Resides at Gallup, New Mexico; born March 17, 1834,at Minden, Prussia, Germany; father, Frederick (born in 1794, at Koenigsberg, Prussia), mother, Emelie Renschuch (born in 1800 at Berlin). Married Isabel Hillock November 6, 1860; children: Marie, Frederick, Otto H., Arthur and James L. Enlisted August 16, 1861, as private secretary to General Sigel; mustered in September 3, 1861, at St. Louis, Missouri, in Company K, Seventeenth Missouri Volunteer Infantry; commissioned Second Lieutenant December 30, 1861, to date from September 3, 1861; promoted to First Lieutenant of Company E, Seventeenth Missouri Infantry, November 1, 1862; acted as secretary to General Sigel, who then commanded a brigade, and in December, 1861, was appointed Aid-de-Camp on staff of General Sigel; May, 1862, was assigned to staff of General Osterhaus; contracted malarial fever in Helena, Arkansas; served in battles of Bentonville, Missouri, March 2, 1862, Pea Ridge and numerous skirmishes; injured by fall with horse on November 19, 1861, near Rolla, Missouri; received flesh wound in right thigh from an ambush June 29, 1862, on march from Jacksonport to Helena, Arkansas; skirmish at Salem, Missouri, May, 1862, while on march to escort General Sigel to Batesville, Arkansas; in command of 28 men; resigned on account of disability and discharged December 4, 1862.

Moon, Charles. Resides at Sanborn, Iowa; born April 3, 1840, at Worcester, Massachusetts; father, Sanford (born in 1816 in Worcester County, Massachusetts), mother, Sarah Ann (born at Widham, Connecticut, April 3, 1814). Married to wife, Mary E., October 4, 1863; children: Anna, Sadie and Irving. Enlisted January 24, 1865 in Company E, Eleventh Illinois Cavalry; right eye injured in service; discharged September 30, 1865, at Memphis, Tennessee. Settled in O’Brien County September, 1870, homesteading northeast 1/4 section 6, Center Township.

Moore, William H. Resides at Napa, California; born March 22, 1846, at Phillipsburg, New York; father, John, and mother, Lorena Hart Moore (born in New Jersey). First wife, Anna Belle Echlin, married June 21, 1871 ; one son, George E.; second wife, Minnie E. Kimball, married October, 1891; children: Minnie E. and Lorena. Enlisted March 23, 1864, Company A, Thirty-seventh Wisconsin Infantry, First Brigade, First Division, Ninth Army Corps; served as Corporal; served battles at Hatch’s Run, Fort Steadman, Fort Mahon, Fort Hill; in defenses of Washington; in provisional battalion at time of Early’s advance; discharged July 27, 1865, near Washington. Settled in O’Brien County 1889 at Sheldon. Member Masonic Lodge. At present in California Soldier's Home for medical treatment.

Morfitt, Daniel. Resides Baker Township, O’Brien County, Iowa; mail at Sheldon; born January 12, 1841, Erie County, Pennsylvania; father, Daniel (born May 20, 1818, in Rhode Island), mother, Elizabeth Gray (born at Byington, Ct., September 1, 1815). Married Florence Estella Hunt December 19, 1872; children: Ivan Clyde, Charles Byington, Herbert K., Chester G., Frederic D., Ernest, William Lester and Earl Leroy. Enlisted at Iowa City, August 15, 1862, Company G, Second Iowa Cavalry; served battles Holly Springs, Coffeyville and others; crushed under horse and ruptured at Coffeyville; discharged March 21, 1863, at Lagrange, Tenn.; settled in O’Brien County April, 1871, section 20, Carroll Township. Member McKenzie Post No. 72, Sheldon, Iowa. He is a quiet, hard working man, tending strictly to his own business, and a successful farmer.

Morrill, Comfort C. Resides at Fox Lake, Ill.; born July 18, 1849, Lake County, Illinois; father, J. Franklin, and mother, Melissa Belden Morrill. Married Mary G. Marvin January 18, 1877; children: M. Arlette, Arthur G., Ray W, Guy B. Enlisted September 3, 1864, at Waukegan in Company D, One Hundred and Forty-sixth Illinois Infantry; discharged July 8, 1865, Springfield, Ill. Settled in county March, 1882, at Sutherland. Member G. Morris, I. Born July 25, 1826. Married Christina Sailors; children: Emeline, Martha, Sarah, Selena, Johnson and Cora. Enlisted August 12, 1862, at Nashua, in Company G, Twenty-seventh Iowa Infantry; transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps March 13, 1865; served at Fort Snelling during Indian uprising; Siege of Vicksburg, Red River Expedition, Mobile and Fort Morgan, Ala.; discharged August 14, 1865, at St. Louis, Mo. Settled in county spring of 1882, at Hartley. Died July 12, 1895, and buried at Cromwell Center, Clay County, Iowa. Member G. A. R.

Morris, R. A. Born 1843 at Eaton, Ohio. Enlisted August 2, 1861, at Macomb, Ill., in Company B, Tenth Missouri Infantry; discharged August 24, 1864. Member McKenzie Post No. 72, Sheldon, Iowa. Came to O’Brien County about 1882.

Morrison, Fred P. B.Born 1838 at Newburyport, Mass. Enlisted October 8, 1862, at Grinnell, in Company E, Fourth Iowa Cavalry; discharged January 3, 1865, at Memphis. Tenn. Resided at Sheldon, where he was member McKenzie Post No. 72 G. A. R.

Morse, Jerome. Resides at Dayton, Texas. Born November 23,1844, at Marengo, Ill.; father, L. L. (born at Waterbury,, mother, Mary (born in New York). Married Nancy Ann, his wife, June 18, 1898; children: John, William, Nancy Ann and George R. Enlisted September 28, 1863, at Waverly, in Company G, Ninth Iowa Infantry, First Brigade, First Division, Fifteenth Army Corps; served in battles at Resaca, Dalton, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Columbia and Goldsboro; discharged February 3, 1866, at Clinton, Iowa. Settled in county fall of 1866, residing in Waterman Township and later in Sheldon.

Morton, Alfred. Born Oswego, N. Y., in 1836. Married his wife, Mary A., November 13, 1861; children: Edith, Alfred and Joe. Enlisted March 29, 1865, at Auburn in One Hundred and Ninety-third New York Infantry; commissioned as Major May 6, 1865, with rank from March 29, 1865; later received commission of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel; discharged January 18, 1866, at Harper’s Ferry; early in the reconstruction period President Grant appointed him Circuit Judge in Virginia; he held this office two years, residing at Richmond, removing to Iowa and settling at Sheldon June, 1879. Died April 19, 1896, and buried at Sheldon. Member Congregational Church; G. A. R. Post at Sheldon and Masonic Lodge at Phoenix, N. Y. He was actively engaged in the practice of law at Sheldon until time of his death.

Morton, James. Born June 20, 1820, Derbyshire, England. Married Anna Margaret Wilt in 1847; children: John H., William, Charles, Elizabeth, Retta, Clara and Susie. Enlisted August 1,1862, Fort Wayne, Ind., in Company C, Eighty-eighth Indiana Infantry; discharged February 14, 1863, Bowling Green, Ky. Settled in O’Brien County 1876, in Center Township, later residing at Hartley and Primghar. Died October 19, 1900, and buried at Primghar. Member S. F. Jordan Post No 417, G. A. R., at Primghar.

Mous, D. Born in Germany. Enlisted August 9, 1862; enlistment rolls give name as Dominick Mous; served in Company B, One Hundred and Fourth Illinois Infantry; discharged June 6, 1865, at Chicago. Member McKenzie Post No. 72, Sheldon.

Myers, Lewis. Resides at Sheldon, Iowa; born April 22, 1825, in Germany; a son of Henry and Frederica Myers. Married Matilda Britch February 27, 1855; children: Mary, William, Lydia, Matilda, Frank, Charles, Clyde. Enlisted February 25, 1865, in Company H, Fifteenth Illinois Infantry; discharged September 16, 1865, at Springfield, Ill. Settled at Sheldon, Iowa, 1905. Member M. E. Church; John A.
