Military Services Held for Daniel Martin-Victim of Accident

Daniel Martin, 21, of the United States navy, accidentally shot himself at the home of his mother in Calumet Friday night and died early Saturday morning at the Sioux Valley hospital in Cherokee. He was on leave from his duties at the time of the accident which occurred while he was showing his family a new pistol.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 2 o'clock at Zion's Evangelical and Reformed church in Calumet.

Rev. M. C. Roberts, Cherokee and Rev. Paul Peterson, conducted the services. Pallbearers were Claire Draper, Ralph Clark, Loring Hardy, James Hawkins, Wayne Case and Robert Miller.

A military service was conducted by Calumet Legion post 688. Color bearers were Gerald Schmidt and Delbert Wiese, color guard, Harold Mugge and Dal-ton Mugge. Presentation of flag was by Commander Carl Kruse who was also in charge of the firing squad. Clayton Hill was bugler.

Interment was in Liberty cemetery, Calumet.

Daniel Louis Martin, son of Albert and Bessie Martin, was born January 13, 1928 at Sioux City, Iowa. He passed away on February 19, 1949 at Sioux Valley hospital at Cherokee at the age of 21 years, 1 month and 6 days.

Daniel lived with his family at Sioux City, Marcus, in and near Paullina and more recently at Calumet, where he attended high school. He was baptized at the the Gospel tabernacle, Calumet July 31, 1938.

On April 26, 1946 he enlisted in the United Slates navy and at the time of his death was a metalsmith third class, having spent three years in the navy, recently re-enlisting for three more years.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bessie Martin of Calumet, four sisters; Mary Lou (Mrs. Merritt Henderson) of Menahga, Minn., Laura, (Mrs. William Wolter) of Storm Lake, Nellie (Mrs. Norman Meyer) of Paullina, and Betty, at home in Calumet; three brothers, Pat of Memphis, Tenn., Burton and Paul of Calumet, besides many other relatives.
