"After the railroad came to Pella in 1866 the price of land in this vicinity became so high that some of the more enterprising Hollanders commenced to inquire as to the possibility of finding a location to start a second colonization movement....The same energy, thrift and ability, that has made the Pella colony one of the richest and most prosperous communities in America, has also marked the history of our people in the northwest. The small group of some sixty-four families that left here in 1870 has grown into one of the largest, or rather the largest colony of people of Holland antecdents, west of Michigan" (Souvenir History of Pella, Iowa, p. 215, 218).
