LOCAL SIFTINGS

For the first time since he came back from California Barnet Devine stayed in town Thursday night. He will

not return to California till in October, for he is doing extensive tiling on his farms in Sherman township.

He says he has learned that it costs something to lay 10 inch tiling, but that it will pay in the long run.

Several times while here he was heard to say that Algona is a nice quiet place to live and raise a family.

for Texas today, Wednesday, on a land seeking excursion and may invest in some southern lands.

More Swamp Land Trouble


The matter of title to swamp lands in this county is being looked up pretty sharply now. Auditor Potter

received a letter from the land commissioner a few days ago telling him to notify Barney Devine, Richard

Hodges, Nicholas Brass, Mary Raney and Christian Schaeffer to meet an officer that will be sent here for

the purpose on November 8, at the court house, and to show whether or not certain tracts of land owned by

them was swamp land.

Mrs. Mike Noonan [Mary Ann Devine] died at her home Sunday evening. The funeral occurred

from the Catholic church at nine a. m. Tuesday. The remains were laid to rest In the Catholic

cemetery.

Office Goes Over Disputed Pieces.

Owners of These Lands in Kossuth

County are Probably Secure in Their Tenure.

Fred Hoisington, special agent of U. S. land office has been in the county for several days looking into the

question of the swampy character of several small tracts of land which have been held as swampy and

occupied for many years. In the fifties the general government conveyed to the state certain of its lands

which were swampy, and the state in turn conveyed them to the county. Many farms in Kossuth are now
