IOWA FIRE DOES $100,000 HARM
Lake Park Blaze Believed Started in Sawdust at Lumber Yard.
LAKE PARK, (AP) - Fire believed to have originated in a sawdust room of a lumber company
early Wednesday destroyed nearly a block of the Lake Park business section, causing an
estimated $75,000 to $100,000 damage.
Fire departments from 10 towns aided the Lake Park department in combating the blaze. A
northwest wind was blowing against the fire, possibly preventing its spread into the town
proper, firemen said.
Business establishments burned:
The Anderson Lumber company, the Farmers Exchange elevator, the Rock Island depot and
water tank, 10 coal sheds of the lumber company, and two empty boxcars.
The fire was discovered about 11:30 Tuesday night, but was not brought under control until
early Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. James Price, who lived over the depot office, escaped injury
but were able to remove only a few of their belongings.
The burned area was about a block long and a half-block wide. Firemen used water from nearby
Silver lake to bring the blaze under control.
