LEWIS ATWATER was
born in Cayuga
county, N. Y., in 1817, and lived in that state till
1869. He was occupied partly in farming and partly in
merchandise, in Cayuga and Tompkins counties. In 1869 he came to
Iowa and settled in Manchester, Delaware
county. In connection with his brother Samuel he had
purchased some fourteen years previous nearly fifteen hundred
acres of land in Wright and Delaware counties, and had bought
out his brother's share in 1868. He purchased a house and lot in
Manchester in 1869, and has since made that place his home. He
started a drug store in that place in 1873, which his son Frank
now manages.
Mr. Lewis Atwater owns at
present about eight hundred and twenty six acres of land. He
manages a farm of five hundred acres, most of which lies in the
western part of Delaware county, a small tract being in Buchanan
county, adjoining.
He was married, February 16, 1841, to Miss Ann M. Price. She
died December 9,1862, at the age of forty two, leaving four
children: Mary E. married L. W. Williams, and lives in
Tompkins county, N. Y.; Eliza S., single, resides at Manchester;
Frank J. married Ada Corning, and
lives at Manchester; Ellen Cornelia married James L. Kelsey, and
resides at Manchester.
Mr. Atwater was married again January 23, 1866, to Miss Cornelia
Swift, who was born in Cayuga county,
N. Y., in 1830. Mrs. Atwater is a member of the Congregational
church. Mr. Atwater is a good republican and a most worthy and
influential citizen. |
