life and was a retired agriculturist who spent the last twenty
three years of his life in well earned ease. He was born in
County Tyrone, Ireland, on the 9th of December, 1824, and was
reared and educated in that country. In 1849, when a young man of
twenty five years, he emigrated to the United States, making the
voyage on a sailing vessel which consumed about four weeks in
crossing the ocean. he took up his abode in Watkins, Schuyler
county, New York, and later removed to Pennsylvania where he was
employed as a farm hand and in a sawmill.
On the 30th of December, 1852, in Pine Grove, Schuyler county,
New York, Mr. Waugh wedded Miss Mary E. Van Duzer, who was born
there, February 3, 1832, a daughter of Milton and Nancy (Huey)
Van Duzer, the former a native of Orange county, New York, of
Knickerbocker stock, and the later of County Tyrone, Ireland.
Milton Van Duzer died when his daughter, Mrs. Waugh, was thirteen
years of age, but his widow survived until her ninety first year.
Both died in Schuyler county, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Waugh

purchased a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Hazel Green
township, and later added to his holdings, owning two hundred and

active of the fields and took up his abode in Manchester, where
he spent the remainder of his life in honorable retirement. He
was laid to rest in the Oakland cemetery and his demise was the
occasion of deep and wide spread regret, for he had won an
extensive circle of warm friends throughout the community.
To Mr. and Mrs. Waugh were born five children, as follows: J.
Milton, a graduate of Iowa State College, class of 1879, and the
present of the Waugh Draft Gear Company of Chicago; William O.,
G. Wallace and Robert E., all of who are deceased; and Nannie E.,
who is still at home with her widowed mother. The last named is a
graduate of the Iowa State College at Ames, class of 1888, and
followed the profession of teaching for six years but abandoned
that work in order to take care of her parents in declining
years.
