Thomas Turner

Agriculturist

Hazel Green Township

Thomas Turner was for many years a successful agriculturist of Hazel Green township, Delaware county, and passed away upon his farm on the 11th of April, 1899. He was born in Holy Cross, Dubuque county, Iowa, on the 11th of October, 1856. He removed with his parents to Boulder township, Linn county, and there grew to manhood. After his marriage, which occurred in 1881, he and his wife removed to Hazel Green township, this county, and took up their residence upon a farm there, which remained their home for many years. Mr. Turner was energetic and displayed sound business judgment in the management of his affairs and his labors returned to him a good annual income.
On the 24th of October, 1881, Mr. Turner was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Leonard, who was born July 10, 1861, at Kingston, Quebec, Canada.
In 1864 she was brought by her parents to this county and has resided here throughout the intervening half century. To Mr. and Mrs. Turner were born six children: Mayme, who is now the wife of Joseph Philips and resides in Ryan, Iowa; Margaret, who married M. J. McEnany and resides in Adams township, this county, upon a farm; Winnie, the wife of Lucius Uhl, of Cedar Rapids; Thomas, who married Frieda Barfuse and is living in Ryan; Bertha, the wife of B. B. Brayton, who resides upon a farm in Prairie township; and Pearl, at home.
After the death of Mr. Turner in 1899 Mrs. Turner continued to reside upon the farm for five years. She then removed to Ryan, where she still lives, highly esteemed by all who know her. Mr. Turner is yet remembered by many in the county as an able farmer and as a man of sterling integrity of character.
