J. B. Smith was for many years engaged in the creamery
business in Delaware county, although his death occurred in Des
Moines, this state. He was born in Indiana, March 4, 1857, but at
an early day came to Iowa and settled in Coffins Grove township,
this county. He engaged in the dairy and creamery business in
various places and was thoroughly familiar with all the phases
thereof. He not only won respect because of his mastery of his
business but also because of his honesty and kindness of heart.
He died in 1909 in Des Moines, and was laid to rest in the
Catholic cemetery.
Mr. Smith was married in this county to Miss Katherine Roach, a
daughter of John and Margaret Roach. His widow still owns the one
hundred acre farm on section26, Coffins Grove township, and
wisely supervises its operation, displaying marked business
ability. She belongs to the Roman Catholic church, as did her
husband and is highly respected wherever known.
