John A. Slick
owns and operates two hundred and twenty acres of fine land in Oneida township and is widely recognized as a progressive
agriculturist. He was born in Clayton county, this
state, September 28, 1867, and his mother survives, although his father has
passed away.
Mr. Slick received his
education in the public schools but when sixteen or seventeen years of age
was compelled to put aside his text books and earn his own livelihood. He
began working as a farm hand and has devoted his life to agriculture, which
he has found helpful, enjoyable and lucrative.
He removed to this
county thirty five years ago although he has lived upon his present place,
which is known as Pleasant View Farm, for only a few years. The property
comprises two hundred and twenty acres in Oneida township,
and it is one of the well improved and valuable places of the county. He
carries on general farming and in addition to cultivating the soil raises
thoroughbred stock. He seeks always to utilize the methods which will gain
the greatest results with the least expenditure of energy and he is an
indefatigable worker when he has decided upon a given course as necessary.
His business affairs are well managed and his capital and resources are
constantly increasing.
In 1889 Mr. Slick was
married to Miss Gertrude Armitage, a daughter of
Henry and Sarah Armitage, and to them were born seven children, namely: Irene, Henry,
Glenn, Margaret, Edith, Dan and Dean. The wife and mother died in 1907 and
Mr. Slick subsequently married Miss Emma Marten, a daughter of J. S. Marten,
and to this union two children have been born,
Florence and Ruth.
Mr. Slick is a
republican and supports the candidates of that party at the polls. He is much
interested in public affairs, especially in the welfare of the schools, and
for a number of years has served as school director. During the thirty five
years that he has lived in this county he has made many acquaintances and
nearly all have become his sincere friends, as all who are associated with
him are impressed by his integrity and genuineness.
