Theodore Shelly has conducted an undertaking establishment in Manchester since 1911 and has gained a reputation for fair dealing and efficiency that is enviable. He was born in Reddick, Illinois, on the 25th of April, 1882, a son of Uriah Shelly, whose birth occurred in Pennsylvania in 1856. The father has been a merchant all his life and is now so engaged in Emington, Illinois. His wife, who was in her maidenhood Miss Sarah Clover, was born in Illinois in 1858 and they became the parents of six children: Burton, a resident of Denver, Colorado; Eugene E., who is in the United States Navy and whose ship has been in Mexican waters during the disturbance there; Theodore; Lyle M., an attorney of Pontiac, Illinois; Jessie, the wife of Oscar Thompson, of Simmerton, Illinois; and Lola, who died in infancy. Theodore Shelly was educated in the common schools of the Prairie state and for five years engaged in farming there, after which he went to Canada, living for a time at various places. He then entered the Barnes School of Anatomy, Sanitary Science & Embalming, from which he was graduated in 1907. He worked along this line in Chicago for a time and then established a furniture and undertaking business in Emington, Illinois, which he conducted for two years. After he sold out there he went to Joliet, Illinois, and worked for W. C. Wundcrlick, an undertaker and the coroner of Will county, for a year and a half. He then came to Manchester in 1911, opened undertaking parlors here on Main street and has since engaged in that business in this city.
