Howard L. Rann has
for many years edited and published The Manchester Press and has also served as
postmaster of the city since 1907. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan, June 7,
1870, a son of Hannibal Lucien and Mary (Leffingwell)
Rann, natives of Silver Creek, Chautauqua county,
New York, and Westfield, that county, respectively. They came to this county in
1871 and established their home in Manchester, where the father founded The
Manchester Press. He was a newspaper man all of his
life and was highly respected by his colleagues in the profession. He passed
away in the city in 1897, when he had reached the age of seventy-three, as he
was born in 1824. His widow survives at the advanced age of eighty-six years and
still makes her home in Manchester. Three of their children are living, namely:
Edith G., a resident of Chicago; Millie, the wife of R. G. Clark of Webster
City, Iowa; and Howard L., of this review.
The last named attended the public schools of Manchester and
later was for three years a student in Cornell College at Mount Vernon. After
completing his formal education he entered into partnership with his father in
the publication of The Press and upon the latter's death assumed the entire
management of the paper, which he still edits. In June, 1907, he was appointed
postmaster and still holds this office, the affairs of which he conducts in a
systematic manner.
Mr. Rann was married October 18,
1894, to Miss Gertrude Arnold, a native of this county and a daughter of Hiram
and Almina Arnold, the latter of whom is deceased.
To Mr. and Mrs. Rann have been
born three children: Amy; Lucien; and Herbert, who died in 1913. Mr.
Rann is a republican in his political belief and is
a member of the Methodist church. His fraternal relations are with the Masons,
the Knights of Pythias and the Modern Woodmen of
America. |
