F. W. Meyen is quite an extensive landowner, as he
realizes the many good points of real estate as an investment. He
is also the president of the Farmers Security Bank of Dundee and
owns all of the stock in that institution. The family home,
however, is maintained at Manchester, where his children are
attending school. He has born in Germany on the 5th of March,
1862, a son of Christopher and Fredericka (Sunbolt) Meyen, both
natives of the fatherland. In 1872 the family removed to America
and located in Clayton county, Iowa, upon a farm. Subsequently
they came to Delaware county and both parents died here. To the
union were born four children; F. W., of this review; Ida, the
wife of William Klatt; Minnie, the wife of John Jennerjohn, a
resident of this township; and Mary, now Mrs. Frank Morris and a
resident of Minnesota.
F. W. Meyen remained at home until he had attained his majority
and then began farming and stock buying in this county. He
still devotes some of his time to these interests, although his
duties as president of the Farmers Security Bank of Dundee demand
much of his attention. In 1913 he organized this bank, which is a
private institution, and is the owner of all of the stock and is
rapidly gaining a place in the confidence of the people of the
county.
In 1912 he moved to Manchester in order to educate his children
and the family still live there. Mr. Meyen owns a great deal of
real estate, including one hundred and forty acres of land on
sections 21 and 22, Richland township, four hundred and eighty
acres in Wisconsin, three hundred and twenty in Minnesota, and
twelve acres in the village of Dundee. He likewise owns the hotel
and the bank building here. He is an excellent judge of realty
values and all of his investments have proved profitable.
Mr. Meyen was married in 1895 to Miss Christina Smith, who is a
native of Clayton county, Iowa, and a daughter of Lawrence of
Elizabeth (Brell) Smith, both natives of Pennsylvania. They came
to Iowa at an early date and in this state the father passed
away, but the mother is still living. Mr. and Mrs. Meyen are the
parents of four children: Glen A., born December 10, 1896, now a
high school student; Ralph D., born January 9, 1900; Esther,
March 30, 1905; and Fred, August 12, 1912. The parents are
members of the German Lutheran church.
Mr. Meyen is a democrat in his politics and is now serving as a
school director. Fraternally he belongs to the Independent Order
of Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America. He has attained
a gratifying success in life, which is due to his consistency of
purpose and his indefatigable energy.
