Thomas Longford was for a number of years connected with
railroad work at Greeley bur for the later years of his life
retired. He was born in England on the 12th of February, 1823,
and remained in his native country until he was a young man of
thirty years. He then came to the United states and settled in
Scott county, Iowa. After the death of his first wife he came to
Greeley and became the first section foreman of the Chicago,
Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway here. He was not only a good worker,
but possessed that quality which enables a man to efficiently
direct the labors of others, and his section was always one of
the best in the division as regards the condition of the road
itself. After he left the railroad he and his wife conducted the
Commercial Hotel at Greeley for a short but they soon retired
from all business cares and gave themselves to the enjoyment of a
life of comfort and leisure. Upon his birthday in 1909 they
entertained their many friends in Greeley and received the
sincere congratulations and good wishes of their guests. On the
20th of December, 1910, Mr. Longford passed away, mourned by
those who had known him.
Mr. Longford was married twice, first at Walcott, this state. His
wife died before his removal to this county and on November 4,
1883, he was again married, Mrs. Maria E. Saxton, whose maiden
name was French, becoming his wife. He was a republican in his
political belief but never desired official preferment as the
care of his own business interests demanded his time and
attention.
