Charles B. Harris, a well known resident of Manchester, is devoting his
attention and energy to looking after his
invested interests, as he owns considerable farming land in the Dakotas. He was
born near Aurora, Illinois, August 11,
1862, a son of Charles and Betsey (Sheldon) Harris, who were natives of New York
state and at an early date in the
history of Illinois settled near Aurora. They took up land and remained there,
carrying on farming until 1866, when they removed to Delaware county, Iowa, and
settled in Delaware township in what is now the northeast portion of the city of
Manchester. The father purchased a small farm, consisting of thirty-three and
three-fourths acres, which he
cultivated intensively until his death in 1867. His widow survived him for many
years, dying in 1905. To them were
born seven children: George, who died in 1867; Herbert O., who is living at
Great Falls, Montana; Sherman L., a
resident of Manchester; Clarence, who lives in Iowa; Charles B.; Clara V., who
is the widow of Irvin A. McGee and
lives in Manchester; and Hugh, who died when one year old.
Charles B. Harris received his education in the public
schools of Manchester and since reaching mature years has
devoted his time to farming and to managing his land. He owns a beautiful
residence in Manchester, which he erected
on the land owned by his father, and is identified with all progressive
movements in the city. He has a large tract of land
in the Dakotas and, as he gives a great deal of thought and care to its
operation, he receives there from a good annual
income.
Mr. Harris was married on the 16th of August, 1905, to Miss
Eva D. Severance, a daughter of Seth and Ellen (Steele)
Severance, of Manchester. Her father is deceased and her mother lives in
Frederick, South Dakota. Mr. and Mrs.
Harris are the parents of the following children: Betsy Ellen, Burdette S.,
George S. and Caroline W. Mr. Harris is a
member of the Woodmen and is popular in social circles in Manchester, his
pleasing personality and genuine worth
gaining him many loyal friends.
