Finley E. Dutton, who has spent his entire life within the borders of Delaware
county, is a factor in financial circles of Manchester as cashier of the Farmers
& Merchants State Savings Bank. His birth occurred on the 31st of December,
1869, his parents being George H. and Elizabeth (Ellison) Dutton, both of whom
were natives of Ohio, the former born February 3, 1834, and the latter January
28, 1836. George H. Dutton came to Iowa in 1856 and followed farming throughout
his active business career. He now resides in Manchester and is well known and
highly esteemed throughout the community which has been his home for nearly six
decades. It was in Ohio that he wedded Miss Elizabeth Ellison, who was called to
her final rest on the 20th of January 1912. To them were born six children, as
follows: Charles E., who is a resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Cecelia, the
wife of Elmer K. Stanberry of Manchester; Edward A., also living in Manchester;
Finley E., of this review; Eva, who gave her hand in marriage to Orman E. Dunlap
of Manchester; and Abbie B., the wife of Maurice P. Hennessey, who is now
serving as sheriff of Delaware county.
Finley E. Dutton acquired his education in the common schools of this county and
was reared to manhood on the home farm, thus early becoming familiar with the
duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He was busily
engaged in the work of the fields until 1902, when he assumed the duties of
county treasurer, ably serving in that capacity for a period of six years or
until he resigned to accept the position of cashier of the First National Bank.
At the end of four years he left the institution to become cashier of the
Farmers & Merchants State Savings Bank, which position he has held continuously
to the present time, now enjoying an enviable reputation as an efficient,
courteous and popular representative of this important banking concern.
On the 22d of May, 1893, Mr. Dutton was united in marriage to Miss Flora Wright,
a native of Delaware county and a daughter of Isaac S. and Nancy (Purdy) Wright,
both of whom are deceased. Our subject and his wife have five children, namely:
Cecil, Wayne, Elma, Lillie and Dean.
Mr. Dutton gives his political allegiance to the republican party and is now
serving as school treasurer, making a creditable record in that connection. In
religious faith he is a Presbyterian, and fraternally he is identified with the
Knights of Pythias, the Masons and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Both he
and his wife have always lived in this county find enjoy a very extensive and
favorable acquaintance here.
