John
Deppe is engaged in the raising of high grade stock upon an
excellent farm comprising three hundred and sixty acres, on
section 4, Bremen township. The farm where he resides has always
been his home, as he was born there on the 17th of November,
1870, a son of William and Bernadine (Schroeder) Deppe, both
natives of Germany. The father emigrated to this country in 1851
and made his way direct to Delaware county, but after a short
time he went to New Vienna, Dubuque county, where he found
employment as a laborer for a few years. He desired to become a
land owner, however, and carefully saved his money with that end
in view, eventually being able to purchase a farm in Bremen
township, Delaware county. The rest of his life was spent as an
agriculturist. His wife came to the United States with her
parents about 1843, when she was a child of five years. Their
marriage occurred at New Vienna in 1858 and they had seven
children, as follows: two who died in infancy; Anna, who married
John Bruggemann, a farmer of Bremen township; John the subject of
this review; Agnes, who became the wife of Henry Mormann, of
Bremen township, and passed away in 1909; Bernadine, the wife of
B. C. Goedken, of this county; and Mary, the deceased wife of
John Koopmann, of Bremen township, her demise occurring in 1901.
The mother died in 1904 and the father in 1909.
John Deppe received a common school education and did his share
of the work on the home farm, thus learning practical methods of
agriculture. He has devoted his life to that occupation and has
never had occasion to regret doing so as he has found it
congenial and highly remunerative. He now holds title to three
hundred and sixty acres of excellent land near Petersburg, which
is in fine condition as he has taken care to conserve the
fertility of the soil and has made many improvements. His home is
one of the finest farm residences in Delaware County and is
provided with hot water heat and gas, and is comfortably and
tastefully furnished. The building itself is not only substantial
but is well designed and of handsome appearance. He sells very
little of the grain raised upon the farm as he feeds it to his
stock. He raises and sells high grade cattle, horses, sheep and
hogs and is known as one of the most successful stock raisers of
the county.
Mr. Deppe was married on the 30th of April, 1895, to Miss
Marguerite Vaske, a daughter of Henry and Bernadine (Wente)
Vaske, both of whom were natives of Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Deppe
became the parents of eight children: William; Nettie, Eleanora;
J. Clemens; Emma; Aloysius, who died in infancy; Henriette; and
Katherine, deceased.
Mr. Deppe is a democrat and is the present efficient township
clerk. Fraternally he belongs to the Roman Catholic Mutual
Protective Association and has many friends not only in that
organization but among the general public. His life has been one
of tireless labor and strict adherence to high standards of
conduct and the high respect in which he is held is but his just
due. |
