Joseph Carey, father in law of J. E. Burroughs, had long been numbered among the substantial and esteemed citizens of Delaware county when he passed away here in 1881. His birth occurred in Rutland county, Vermont, on the 21st of March, 1834, his parents being Lazarus and Lucy Carey, who came to Iowa in an early day and here spent the remainder of their lives. To them were born five children, all of who have passed away.

    Joseph Carey was married when a young man of nineteen and came with his bride to Delaware county, Iowa, in 1853. At the end of three months the latter returned to Boone county, Illinois, and three years later the young couple again came to Delaware county, establishing their home in Manchester. There Mr. Carey conducted a cooper shop for seventeen years and on the expiration of that period took up his abode on the farm in Richland township where his widow now resides with her daughter Lura. On that place he spent the remainder of his life, devoting his attention to its operation with excellent success.

    On the 14th of August, 1853, Mr. Carey was united in marriage to Miss Polly Ann Allen, who was born in New York on the 21st of June, 1836, her parents being Jesse and Clocena (Esterbrook) Allen, natives of New York and Vermont respectively and descendants of Ethen Allen. They came to Iowa in 1869 and here continued to reside until they passed away. Mrs. Carey is the only surviving member of their family of seven children. By her marriage she became the mother of three children, namely: Fred F., who is a resident of Manchester, Iowa; Ida F., the wife of J. P. Lee of Richland township; and Lura, who is the wife of J. E. Burroughs. Mr. Carey died in 1881 and was laid to rest in the Oakland cemetery. A third of a century has since passed but his memory is still enshrined in the hearts of many who knew and loved him.
