NORTH HALL

Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa
Originally called Saint's Home, North Hall was located at the far end of Silver Street in Lamoni. It was built by the RLDS Church in 1896 at a cost of $19,000 and was located on 60 acres of land. It was used as a home for aged church members.

The building was made of red brick and was designed by Charles Dunham, the architect for the Administration Building. The building, dubbed “North Hall” because of its location at the northwest area of Lamoni, became a men's dormitory in September of 1941.

The October 3, 1941 issue of the Graceland Tower listed the following as North Hall's original officers: dean Don Harpley, president Elbert Dempsey, vice-president Edmund Wong, secretary-treasurer Fred Alexander, “telephone girl” Bill Kraschel, “goat” Doren Rassmussen and “saint” Clifford Buck.

The college purchased the first of a succession of buses in 1941 to transport students to and from North Hall. The initial bus, painted bright orange, was dubbed “the Orange crate” by Roscoe Faunce.

Beginning in the fall of 1943, North Hall became a dormitory for 35 women with Marion Katzmann serving as the hall's dean. On October 7, 1943, North Hall elected Vicky Cotton of California as chair of the executive committee. Other officers of the committee were first floor counselor Allie V. Porter, second floor counselor Lois Billert and social director Wanda Harris.

Upon the completion of the second Patroness Hall in 1952, North Hall was supposed to go back to the RLDS Church as a home for the elderly. However, the building was demolished shortly after the students moved out.
