Robert J. Braase (1925 - 2002)
Robert J. Braase was born October 5, 1925, the son of Herbert and Esther Eggen Braase. He died June 9, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 76.He was born on a farm southwest of Schleswig and was baptized in 1925, and confirmed in 1940 by Rev. Rinne. He attended rural Hanover #1 school for eight years and quit high school after one and one-half years to help his father farm. He helped his father deliver milk for the Braase Dairy around the Schleswig area before they bought a farm near Kiron. In 1941, he was deferred from the service to assist on the farm as farming was essential due to the war.
On February 20, 1945, Bob married Luella Clausen of Charter Oak. The couple was blessed with the birth of three daughters. After several years, they moved to Schleswig to assist his father at the gas station and repair shop, which was his main interest which later became known as "Braase Corner". Bob also worked in Ida Grove for several years as a mechanic for Groth Repair and also at Hollander Ford Garage for thirteen years. After his father's retirement, Bob returned to work at Braase Repair Shop, along with his wife, Luella.
He was a member of United Church of Christ in Schleswig and served on the City Council for several years. He was also a volunteer fireman for fifteen years. He enjoyed fishing with his family and friends during the years. After his retirement in 1999, Bob and Luella sold their house and shop moving to a smaller house in Schleswig. He enjoyed the home but still missed the old repair shop. He did most of the repair jobs around the home and enjoyed being the "fix-up Grandpa" for his younger grandchildren. If grandpa can't fix it - no one can! He also enjoyed spending an hour in the morning having coffee with his friends.
Until May 15th, Bob was in reasonably good health until he suddenly suffered heart problems and was admitted to St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. He had made an amazing recovery from intensive twelve-hour surgery but had a relapse on May 29, from which he never recovered.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one grandchild, Cory Quandt. Survivors include his wife Luella, three daughters: Coleen Bockelmann of Omaha; Darla Quandt and her husband, Steve of Emporia, Kansas; and Jena McMinemee and her husband, Mike of Denison; seven grandchildren: Teri Wilson, Tricia Achterhoff, Troy Bockelmann, Chad Quandt, and Dustin, Austin and Josie McMinemee; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Jeremy McMinemee; three great-grandchildren: Amanda and Bailey Wilson, and Cory Quandt; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Juanita Gillies officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Dorothy Jessen provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "I'm But a Stranger Here", "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Those serving as pallbearers were: Howard Wellendorf, Fred Backhaus, William Ullerich, Bill Brockman, Verdell Kastner and Arlen Meseck. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Women's Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Charles DeConnick (1928 - 2000)
Joseph Charles DeConnick was born February 26, 1928, the son of August and Bridget McNertney DeConnick. He died Monday, March 6, 2000 at his home in Loveland, Colorado at the age of seventy-two.Joe was born in Goodrich Township, Denison, Iowa and received his education in a rural school near his home. He was baptized in Christ as an infant and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.
On February 11, 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Adele Gehring at a Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. They settled in Early, Iowa, where Joe worked as a custodian and drove a school bus for the Early Community School for three years. The couple moved to a farm and worked for James Hartsel until the mid 1950's. Subsequently they moved to a farm, near Denison and worked for Walt Lauritzen, until purchasing the Hatchery, Creamery and Feed Mill, later adding the fertilizer plant. Joe moved to Denison in 1978 and continued to farm, until retiring in 1992. Joe became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison shortly after his marriage to Adele. He enjoyed farming, fishing, watching game shows and various sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Adele in 1995, three sisters, Anna Marie Ecklund, Elizabeth Miller and Francis Jacobsen. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Stockdale and her husband, Robert of Riverton, Wyoming; Patricia Meseck and her husband, Allan of Ricketts; two sons, Bernard DeConnick of Oregon City, Oregon; John DeConnick of Denison; thirteen grandchildren, Becky Ann, Gregg, Marty, Dirk, Theresa, Tim, Tom, Christina, Benji, John and Brian; eleven great-grandchildren, Shawn, Cheryl, Marty Jo, Nicole, Elisha, Tyler, Jahn Mark, Tyler, Cadi and Byrce; two great-great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Steven; one sister, Amelia Wellendorf of Manning; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were, held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2000 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen as he sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and for congregational hymn "I Know that My Redeemer Lives." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were: Tom Christiansen, Clarence Denker, James Laubscher and Milfred Nemitz. Those serving as pallbearers were: Larry Von Tersch, Dennis Denker, Tim Houston, Dan Cumyn, Kevin Boeck and Mike Vogt. The family invited everyone in attendance to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

MaDonna Mary (Hansen) Christiansen (1924 - 2005)
MaDonna Mary Christiansen was born August 20, 1924, the daughter of Carl and Arnada Hennings Hansen. She died Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty.MaDonna was born in Denison, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on February 3, 1925 and later confirmed on April 2, 1939 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She received her elementary education at the Zion Lutheran School and then attended Denison Community School.
On December 28, 1942, MaDonna was united in marriage to Orville Christiansen at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with one son and eleven daughters. MaDonna was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Denison American Legion Auxiliary. She was a loving and caring mother and best friend who enjoyed helping her children. She enjoyed cooking, playing cards, socializing and entertaining friends, especially her children.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Orville in 1988; her son, Ted in 1989; one daughter, LaDonna in infancy; one grandson, Jeff in 1989; one sister, Helen Speake; five brothers, Addis, Gilbert, Curtis, Robert, and Dennis; four sisters-in-law, Audrey Hansen, Audrey Schraeder, Marian Christiansen, LaVonne Stoelk; three brothers-in-law, Joe Speake, Bob Pearson and LaVern Christiansen.
Survivors include ten daughters, Marita Lingle and her husband, Allen of Denison; Pat Tierney Auen of Omaha; Becky Engel and her husband, Eugene; Kay Voss and her husband, Larry, all of Denison; Teresa Poulsen of Omaha; Debbie Greene and her husband, Dan of Story City; Kelli Christiansen of Blair, Nebraska; Kristi Bell and her husband, James; Beth Vogt and her husband, Russell of Omaha; Kathy Kahl and her husband, Gary of Denison; thirty grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clifford Hansen and his wife, Doris of Des Moines; Murle Schraeder of Denison; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ann Christiansen of Carroll; Tom Christiansen and his wife, Alice; Rita Wiebers and her husband, Andy; Sylvia Pearson; Betty Eggers and her husband, Don, all of Denison; and Wes Stoelk of Westside; many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 8, 2005 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. Edward Murray served as Celebrant of the Mass with interment at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery. Jean Cornelius provided the organ music for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Jennifer Voss served as Lector; Johnathon Pauley, Sierra Pauley, Jade Pauley and Jaxson Pauley served as Gift Bearers; Jasmin Cabrera, Christina Madsen and Ben Claypool served as Readers with granddaughter, Brooke MaDonna Greene reading a poem. Grandsons serving as Honorary Pallbearers were Andrew Voss, Joseph Siemer, Brad Greene, Connor Vogt, Eric Siemer, Dylan Vogt, Coltin Kahl, Justin Kahl, Austin Bell, Ryan Voss and Jon Christiansen. Fern Clara (Backhaus) Stier (1920 - 1999)
Fern Clara Backhaus Stier was born on August 21, 1920 to Carl and Clara Schumann Backhaus. She died on Thursday, December 9, 1999, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of seventy-nine years.Fern was born in Morgan Township, baptized in Christ on October 3, 1920 at Grant Township Church and attended rural schools near Schleswig. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on April 14, 1935.
On March 16, 1941, Fern was united in marriage to Alvin A. Stier at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple farmed together near Charter Oak and Schleswig for forty-seven years. Two daughters, Nancy and Marsha, blessed their union. Alvin and Fern celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991. Alvin passed away in 1992. Then living in their Schleswig home, Fern filled her remaining years with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking and baking, stitchery, and tending the flower beds built by Alvin. She was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, their Ladies Aid and quilting group.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin, siblings Otto Backhaus, Lucille Kruse, Gertrude Ernst and an infant brother. She is survived by daughters, Nancy Simpson of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Marsha Lindstrom and her husband, Jim of Kiron, Iowa; four grandchildren, Angela Horsley and her husband, Brad of St. Peters, Missouri, Zachary Simpson of Iowa City, Iowa, Allison Lindstrom of Mattoon, Illinois and Anne Simpson of Northfield, Minnesota; and one great-granddaughter, Shailey Hurley of Mattoon, Illinois; one brother, Carl Backhaus and his wife, Janet of Aurelia, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Ella Neubaum of Denison, Iowa and Irma Kruse of Schleswig, Iowa; brother-in-law, Earl Keim of Denison, Iowa; nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Fern was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be remembered for her strong spirit, quiet courage, faith and kindness.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 13, 1999, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing, "Abide with Me" and "Amazing Grace" and congregational hymn "Let All Together Praise Our God." Those serving as pallbearers were Lyle Marquardt, Bruce Backhaus, Randall Kragel, Verdean Kruse, Hugo Ernst Jr. and Charles Ernst. Ima Jean (Schultz) Hansohn (1928 - 1996)
Ima Jean Hansohn was born October 12, 1928 to Fred and Gertrude Schultz. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Wednesday, October 9, 1996 at the age of sixty-seven.Ima Jean known as Iny, was born on a farm in Otter Creek Township, Kiron, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ at the home of her parents on November 18, 1928 by Rev. Luth and later confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa on April 18, 1943. She received her education in various rural schools in Otter Creek Township and spent her teenaged years helping her parents on the farm.
On February 8, 1949, Iny was united in marriage to LeRoy Hansohn at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. The couple settled on LeRoy's family farm in Stockholm Township and were blessed with the birth of five children. Iny was employed as a waitress by Joanie's Place in Deloit until it closed in 1991 and later by Okomo's in Deloit. She loved working and socializing with people.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, their Ladies Aid and the Denison Legion Auxiliary. Iny was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother who was very caring of her family and friends. In her leisure time, Iny enjoyed cooking, cleaning, traveling to Las Vegas and Sloan. She also enjoyed flowers and lawn ornaments.
Iny was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Judy Hennings and one granddaughter, Jessica Linn. Survivors include her husband, LeRoy of Kiron; one son, Steven Hansohn and his wife, Sue of Onawa; four daughters, Sheila Launderville and her husband, Ed of Denison; Starla Steinkuehler and her husband, Jim of Dow City; Sandy Hansohn of Deloit; Shelly Pick and her husband, Bob of Waukee, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Amber and Kristine Linn; Ryan, Nick and Cody Steinkuehler; Madyson Pick; Scott and Andrea Hansohn; one brother, Wayne Schultz and his wife, Betty of Denison.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 1996 at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Hilmer Hafner officiated the service and graveside rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron, Iowa. Lois Gronau provided the service music for vocalists, Scott Hansohn singing "Wind Beneath My Wings" and Henry Henningsen singing "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and congregational hymn "Crown Him With Many Crowns." Vernon Edward Brodersen (1923 - 1992)
Vernon Edward Brodersen was born March 21, 1923, to Hans and Alma Brodersen at their farm in Hanover Township and was baptized by Rev. Wm. Frese. He attended Hanover No. 7 school through the eighth grade and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church on April 5, 1936, by Rev. Wm. Frese.He farmed with his parents until Feb. 16, 1947, when he was married to Lu Verne Mesenbrink at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. To this union, six children were born. Vernon and Lu Verne farmed for five years in the Manilla area and for the past forty years northwest of Denison in Hanover Township. In 1971 they moved to the present family residence in Denison, Ia.
Vernon spent many quit hours outdoors on the family farm. He loved animals - his cattle, cats, and dog - and liked to listen to the coyotes howl at night. He enjoyed sitting at his kitchen table or in his truck listening to radio talk shows, farm news, Iowa basketball games, and polka music. He was interested in mechanics and was an ardent follower of local and national auto racing. He enjoyed the company of his six children, seven grandchildren, and many other family members and friends. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Vernon died of lung cancer Friday, March 27, 1992 at the age of sixty-nine years and six days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lu Verne, by his parents, Hans and Alma Brodersen, and by his mother-in-law, Mattie Mesenbrink.
He is survived by his children: Cynthia and husband, Craig Corrie of Olympia, Wash., Bonnie and husband, Eugene Robbins of Ashland, Ore., Cheryl and husband, Basant Patnaik, Colette and Barbara, all of Iowa City; and Craig of Denison; one brother, Eldon and wife, Muriel of Denison; one sister, Bernice Kuhlmann and husband, Vernon of Charter Oak; and grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Rachel, Sangina, Trij, Emily and Sarita; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 30, 1992 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Ia. with Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Philip Block officiating the service and graveside rites held in the Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Henry Henningsen singing, "Abide With Me! Fast Falls the Eventide" and "The Lord's Prayer" and congregational singing, "Beautiful Savior" and "Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty." Pallbearers were Dennis Bergstadt, Larry Brodersen, Roger Brodersen, Barry Jurgensen, Barry Kuhlmann, Erwin Listamann, Delbert Ullrich and Don Ullrich. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Denison, Ia.

Harold Jay Schroeder (1925 - 2000)
Harold Jay Schroeder was born June 26, 1925, the son of Harry and Elsie Schumann Schroeder. He died Monday, November 20, 2000, at the Manning Plaza in Manning, Iowa at the age of seventy-five.Harold was born in Carroll, Iowa and received his education at the Westside Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1943. He was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the Evangelical Church in Westside.
On May 21, 1946, Harold was united in marriage to Edna Roecker at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla. The couple settled on a farm in Hayes Township, where Harold farmed in partnership with his father until 1962. They moved to the John Lawler farm in Jackson Township, farming until 1966 and moving to their new home in Westside. Harold worked at Rose Feed for four years and then at Arcadia Coop from 1970 until July 1, 1987, retiring due to health problems.
Harold was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Westside Community Club and Westside Senior Citizens. Harold enjoyed ballroom and square dancing and was a member of the Manning Square Dance Club, where he served as president. He also enjoyed playing cards and in his younger years playing on the high school basketball team and later on the town team.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl Schroeder in infancy and Elden Schroeder; father-in-law, Frank Roecker; brothers-in-law, Donald, Norbert, Marvin and Rolland Roecker.
Survivors include his wife, Edna of Westside; four daughters, Sharon Schroeder of Oakdale, Minnesota; Diane Janning and her husband, Dennis of Carroll; Jeri Coleman and her husband, Joe of Denison; Kim Countryman and her husband, Jim of Cambridge, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Natalie Janning and her fiancée, Christian Williams of Ralston, Nebraska; Melissa, Jodi and Tim Coleman of Denison; Jamie, Jason and Jeremy Nobiling of Cambridge; one step-granddaughter, Andrea Countryman of Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Aislinn Williams of Ralston, Nebraska; his mother-in-law, Lavina Roecker of Denison; six sisters-in-law, Ruth Schroeder of Manning; Norma Rowedder and her husband, Ivan of Schleswig; Charla Knapp and her husband, Munn of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; Linda Roecker of Ogden; Joyce Roecker of Manning; Theda Roecker of Syracuse, Nebraska; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Roecker and his wife, Diane of Schleswig; special family friend, Margaret Mary Keating of Oakdale, Minnesota; many other relatives and friends.

A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m., Friday, November 24, 2000 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Laverne (Hass) Schmidt (1922 - 1996)
Laverne Schmidt was born December 20, 1922, the daughter of Julius and Lena Clausen Hass. She died May 11 at the County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-three. Laverne grew up in Hayes Township, Iowa near Manning and received her education in a rural school near her home. After completing her education, she worked for various families in the Crawford County region as needed.On February 4, 1945, Laverne was united in marriage to Earl Schmidt at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison by Rev. C.W. Schmidt. The couple settled on a farm west of Schleswig where they farmed for two years before moving to the Schmidt family farm where they remained until 1984 when they moved to Schleswig after retiring from farming. They were blessed with the birth of three children.
In her younger years, Laverne worked at the Royal Cafe and other area businesses. In more recent years, she worked as the Immanuel Lutheran Church custodian, a job she did for several years. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and crafts of various kinds, in addition to socializing with family and friends that often included a friendly game of cards. Since retiring, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, Earl.
Laverne was a devoted member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, their Ladies Aid society and the Farmeretts, a membership lasting nearly thirty years. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who had a lasting and caring affection for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Henry, Marvin and Melvin. Survivors include her husband, Earl of Schleswig, two sons, Dennis and his wife, Betty and Steven and his wife, Connie all of Denison; and one daughter, Phyllis Schmidt of Ida Grove; six grandchildren; one sister, Helen Schuldt and her husband, Raymond of Denison; and two brothers, Lester Hass and his wife, Viola of Harlan and Merlin Hass and his wife, Verna of Manning. Other survivors include three sisters-in-law, Vernetta Hass and Zita Hass both of Denison and Florence Lapel of Manning.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 14, 1996 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Patrick Sparling officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. He died Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty.Harold was born on a farm in Hayes Township near Westside, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed on April 6, 1944 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manilla, Iowa. He received his education in Hayes Township, District 5, Center School. After his education, he worked with his family on the farm.
Harold was united in marriage to Irma Gierstorf on February 1, 1948 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. The couple made their home on his family farm and were blessed with the birth of five children. In 1954, Harold and Irma moved to her family farm in Schleswig where he continued farming until moving to town in 1994. He was blessed with the talent of fixing everything and enjoyed working on and overhauling farm machinery. He also enjoyed woodworking and was fond of International tractors. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Patty; one brother, Arlo; two sisters: Ruth in infancy; and Alice Nissen; and one stepsister, Marge Stahl.
He is survived by his wife, Irma of Schleswig; four sons: Steven and his wife, Lee of Heron Lake, Minnesota; Randy and his wife, Mary of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois; Kevin and his wife, Sherri of Humboldt, Iowa; and Kent and his wife, Nan of Schleswig; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren; one step-sister, Lois Hansen and her husband, Lyle of Denison; four sisters-in-law: Alice Bornhoft of Manilla; Esther Gierstorf of Schleswig; Marge Lantz of Ida Grove; and Lorraine Groth and her husband, Chester of Schleswig; two brothers-in-law: Roger Nissen of Carroll; and Delbert Gierstorf of Schleswig; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "I'm But a Stranger Here". Other service music played was "I Can Only Imagine". Those serving as pallbearers were: Anthony Bornhoft, Lindsay Bornhoft, Amber Mefferd, Gavin Bornhoft, Dakota Thomsen, Virginia Bornhoft, Lukas Bornhoft and Alissa Bornhoft. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Norman L. Busch (1924 - 1999)
Norman L. Busch was born at Denison, Iowa, July 26, 1924, the son of Lawrence and Ruby Larson Busch. He was raised at Denison being graduated from the Denison High School with the Class of 1941. He then furthered his education attending Business College in Omaha, Nebraska.On August 2, 1944, Norman was united in marriage with Lillian Stephenson at Denison, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Candace and Deb. During World War II, from March 16, 1944 until his discharge, January 7, 1946, Norman served his country in the United States Army receiving the Purple Heart for wounds received in Luxemburg and Germany.
Upon his discharge Norman and Lillian moved to Stillwater, Minnesota where he was employed as a carpenter. In 1951 they returned to Deloit, Iowa where they purchased the Deloit Grocery operating it for fifteen years. In addition to running the grocery store he also drove a school bus for the Deloit route. In 1962, Norman became the Deloit Postmaster serving in that capacity for 18 years until failing health forced his retirement in 1980.
Following retirement Norman and Lillian remained in Deloit spending the winter months at Winter Haven, Florida for 15 years. In his spare time Norman enjoyed socializing with friends and family, hunting, fishing, traveling and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion Post 690, Deloit, Iowa.
Norman died at his home in Deloit, Iowa, Thursday evening, March 18, 1999. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 74 years, 7 months and 22 days.
Including his parents, Norman was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Busch. Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 54 years, Lillian Busch of Deloit, two daughters, Candace and her husband, George Dibbs of Dallas, Texas and Deb and her husband, Don Namanny of Kiron, Iowa, four grandchildren, Scott and Michelle Mesenbrink of Colleyville, Texas, Brian Mesenbrink of Langtry, Texas, Stephanie and Donavon Gierstorf of Schleswig, Iowa, and Heather and Paul Frese of Springfield, Missouri, two great-grandchildren, Ian Turner of Austin, Texas and Madison Gierstorf of Schleswig, Iowa, one sister, Bonnie and her husband, Wilbert Schramm of Winter Haven, Florida, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 22, 1999 at the First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa with the Rev. Chrisa Ferguson and the Rev. Kenneth M. Ferguson officiating. Music for the service was provided by Gwen Ecklund singing "On Eagles Wings" and the congregation singing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "The Hymn of Promise". Nancy Miles served as organist. Casket bearers include Dudley Ullrich, Kyle Ullrich, Ron Mesenbrink, Donavon Gierstorf, Paul Frese and Roger Brink. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was in the Kiron Cemetery at Kiron, Iowa. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Caroll Forest Gress (1925 - 1987)
Caroll Forest Gress was born on Dec. 31, 1925 in Willow Township near Charter Oak, Ia., the son of George Gress and Clara Golden Gress. He died on Dec 20, 1987 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison having attained the age of 61 years. Caroll grew up on a farm and attended the Dow City Schools. He worked on farms in the area.On Jan 30, 1049 he and Gertrude Rabe of Kenwood, were united in marriage at the Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints in Dow City. To this union one son was born. Caroll and Gertrude worked on farms until 1956 when they started farming for themselves. He also drove school bus for 23 years in the Charter Oak school district. He was active in both farming and school bus driving at the time of his death. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak.
In addition to his parents, Caroll was preceded in death by a brother, Ira and an infant sister, Anna Mae.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude, son James Gress stationed at the Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; three grandchildren; three brothers: George Gress and his wife Almarine of Denison, Arthur Gress of Charter Oak, and Charles Gress and his wife, Harriet of Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister Noreen and her husband Charles Jordan of Waterloo and one sister-in-law, Betty Gress of Denison.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Dec. 24, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Charter Oak, with Reverend James Gubser officiating. Mrs. Dean Hunter served as organist for Henry Henningsen as soloist. Selections were "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Burial was in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Serving as pallbearers were David Gress, Scott Gress, Dennis Meseck, Darvin Landgraf, Dale Segebart and Grand Bahls. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Charter Oak.

Ernest Ralph Wiebers (1924 - 1977)
Ernest Ralph Wiebers was born May 25, 1924 at Deloit, Iowa, the son of Otto and Dora Backhaus Wiebers. He died Wednesday afternoon, September 28, 1977, at Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, Iowa, after a long illness at the age of 53.Ernest was raised on the family farm near Deloit, and later moved to a farm west of Schleswig. He received his formal education in the rural schools of the area. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith March 17, 1940 by Pastor Rinne.
He was united in marriage October 14, 1945 to Lavina Pautsch at Charter Oak, Iowa. Together they lived and worked on the family farm west of Schleswig. Ernest moved from the farm in 1971 to Schleswig and continued to work his farming operation.
Ernest was preceded in death by his father, Otto, in 1966. Survivors include his wife, Lavina, of Schleswig; two sons, Curtis of Denison and Larry of Schleswig; and three grandchildren. Also by his mother, Mrs. Dora Wiebers of Schleswig; and two brothers Robert of Charter Oak and Donald of Sac City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 1, 1977, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Hymns of Praise were: "How Great Thou Art" and "Now the Day is Over". Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery near Schleswig. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Pallbearers included Kevin Boeck, Corvin Teut, Ronald Teut, Rick Wiebers, Alan Wiebers and Dale Wiebers.

Martens, 77, formerly of Denison, died Thursday at the Fountain West Health Center in Des Moines.
Survivors include two sons, Clark of Denison and Craig of Mission, Kan.; one daughter, Cathie Sager of Waukee; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Kies of Lake View; her step-mother Hertha Kies of Lake View; and a half-sister, Etta Kowalke of Lake View.

John F. Gronau (1920 - 1980)
John F. Gronau was born July 25, 1920 at Donna, Texas, the son of Louis and Anna Newmann Gronau. He died on July 26, 1980 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa at the age of 60.While still an infant, John moved with his family to the Kiron area. They made their home on a farm near Kiron where John attended the rural schools near his home. He later graduated from the Kiron High School in 1937. He farmed with his father for a time before marriage.
On June 8, 1947, John was united in marriage to Maxine Else at Trinity Lutheran Church at Grant Township. They made their home on the Gronau home place near Kiron where John worked his entire working career. John was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Stockholm Township. He was also a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League.
John was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife Maxine of Kiron, two sons, Douglas of Vail and Dale of Kiron and one daughter Susan, Mrs. Dennis Ackerman of Boone, and his mother, Mrs. Anna Gronau of Kiron. Also by seven grandchildren, two brothers, Harold of Omaha, and Raymond of Kansas City, and one sister, Malinda, Mrs. Hugo Dahms of Schleswig.
Funeral services were held July 29, at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery at Stockholm Township. The Rev. Paul Wiegert officiated at the services. Pallbearers included, Jim Moller, Gene Bergman, Milton Giermann, Charles Buchanan, Elroy Koch and Louis Aldag. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison.

John Fredrick Lantz, 60, of rural Charter Oak, died Saturday, December 28, 1985, at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City. John was born March 6, 1925, in Ida County, Iowa. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948. In 1949, he started his farming career and was a lifelong area resident.On January 30, 1949, John was united in marriage to Marjorie Asmus at Schleswig. He was a member of the Schleswig American Legion Post 645 and the Schleswig V.F.W. Post 3930.
Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Mrs. Larry (Cynthia) Mogolov of Kansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Kim (Georgia) Stern of Sioux Fall, South Dakota, Mrs. Joel (Mary) Tyler of Cushing, Mrs. Brian (Jill) Schultz of Sioux Fall, South Dakota, and Jeri Lantz of Iowa City; one son, John Lantz Jr. of Schleswig; and 11 grandchildren. He is further survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Lantz of Ida Grove, five sisters, Mrs. Glenn (Estella) Walter of Ida Grove, Mrs. Phil (Helen) Sacquety of Ida Grove, Mrs. Richard (Elna) Empey of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mrs. Lee (Vera) Stewart of Walker, Minnesota and Mrs. Jack (Ruth) Benson of Chicago, Illinois; and one brother, George Lantz of Ida Grove.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, December 31, 1985, at 10:30 a.m. at St Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove with Rev. Dennis Schultz officiating. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the Schleswig American Legion and V.F.W. Posts. Irene Grace (Benischek) Quick (1925 - 1996)
Irene Grace, daughter of Martin and Julia Slechta Benischek, was born May 26, 1925, near Vail, Iowa. She attended rural schools near her home in Crawford County.On December 19, 1943, Irene was united in marriage with Everett Quick at the Methodist Parsonage in Manilla. Five children were born to this union. They farmed for a number of years and even after her husband started a trucking business, they continued to live on the farm. Irene was a homemaker and her family was of the utmost importance to her. Irene and Everett valued the friendships they made at the Annual Corn Husking Contests, where she participated and won many state and national contests. In 1992, Everett and Irene moved into Manilla. Her husband died on August 9, 1995.
Irene was a member of the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, as well as the Friendly Farmers Club. She served as a 4-H leader for many years. Irene enjoyed good health for all he life until about a year ago, when she was diagnosed with cancer. She died on Wednesday, August 21, 1996, at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, at the age of 71 years, 2 months, 25 days.
Besides her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys Benischek.
Irene is survived by her children: Marilyn and her husband, Steve Schrum, of Nevada; Clarence Quick and his wife, Lee, of Des Moines; Karen Pounds of Omaha; Allen Quick and his wife, Darcy, of Woodbine; and Janet Quick of Dubuque; nine grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a sister, Ruth, and her husband, Leo Reinart of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; and a brother, Lee Benischek of Farmington, Missouri; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Junior Edwin Carstens (1922 - 2004)
Junior Edwin, son of Peter and Mary (Pepper) Carstens was born July 24, 1922, on a farm near Manilla. Iowa. He graduated from Manilla High School in 1040.On June 17, 1947, Junior was united in marriage with Patricia H. Miller at St Joseph's Church in Earling. They lived in Manilla for a short time before moving to the farm north of Manilla where they continued to live for over 57 years. Junior was a cattle and grain farmer. He was very committed to his farm-related organizations and very active in the community. Junior was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and the Holy Name Society.
He was a 4-H leader, A.S.C. committeeman and ISU Extension Council member. He was a director and officer with the Crawford County Cattlemen's National Cattlemen's Association. He served as secretary of the Crawford County Zoning Commission Board, Junior was founding president of the Manilla Community Club and director of the Manilla Manor. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards and traveling with Pat.
Junior's health began to fail at the beginning of 2004 and he became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home on October 1, 2004. He died there on Thursday, November 4, 2004, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 11 days.
Preceding Junior in death are his parents; three brothers: one in infancy; Melroy and Albert "Kit" Carstens; and two sisters: Florence and Malinda Carstens. He is survived by his wife Patricia "Pat" Carstens of Manilla; two sisters-in-law: Lucille Carstens of Manilla and Mary Mertens of Spokane, Washington; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held after 4:00 p.m. at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manilla on Sunday. A Holy Name Society Rosary was held at 5:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service was held at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Gralapp. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 8, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa. Celebrant was Rev. Robert Gralapp, lector was Carl Van Aerham, Eucharistic minister was Ruth Ann Tigges. Mass servers were Bailey Schechinger and Katie Schechinger. Gift bearers were Judy Frank, Joyce Miller and Elaine Struve. Music was "Be Not Afraid", "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagle's Wings" by the Sacred Heart Choir. Louise Whitecotton served as organist. Casket bearers were Bill Jacoby, Dr. Marlin Frank, Doug Gross, Keith Jorgensen, Dan Schechinger, and Chris McGee, Honorary casket bearers were Jim Gross, Alvin Bandow, Joe Schiltz, Don Pederson, Mel Schechinger, Loren Ferry, Dale Lafrentz, and Fred Blum. Interment was held in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Manilla, Iowa.

Lieselotte Emma Cristiane (Keim) Bullmann (1929 - 2005)
Lieselotte Emma Cristiane Bullmann was born March 15, 1929, the daughter of Karl and Emma Daum Keim. She died Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of seventy-six.Lieselotte was born in Reichenborn, Germany and received her education near her home. On February 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Albert Bullmann in Bierstadt, Germany. The couple made their home in Bierstadt and were blessed with the birth of two children, Albert and Joanne.
She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed taking care of her family. She took pride in her home and worked hard to keep her home immaculate, never allowing dust or a cobweb to settle, in her spare time, she enjoyed knitting crocheting, and doing needlework. She also enjoyed bowling in a league in Ricketts. She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts, and a former member of their Ladies Aid.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Karl; and her brother-in-law, Otto Bullmann. She is survived by her husband, Albert; one son, Albert and his wife, Sheila of St. George, Utah; and one daughter, Joanne Neppl and her husband, Gene of Halbur, Iowa; two granddaughters, Kelly Bullmann of Hopkins, Minnesota and Amanda Bullmann of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters-in-law; Ilse Namanny of Kamrar, Iowa; and Hilde Bullmann of Wiesbaden, West Germany; other relative and friends.

Catherine C. (Reisz) Hanlin (1921 - 2003)
Catherine C. (Kate) Hanlin was born January 14, 1921, the daughter of Gustav and Catherine Klemens Reisz. She died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at the Crawford County memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-two.Kate was born in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized into God's Grace and raised in the Catholic Faith knowing Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. After receiving her education from rural schools, she worked locally in homes and on her parent's farm.
On March 28, 1951, Kate was united in marriage to William Hanlin at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. They settled on a farm east of Vail and were blessed with the birth of three children. In 1989 the couple retired and moved to Vail. After her husband's death in 1994, Kate moved to Schleswig, Iowa to be closer to family. In September of 2000, Kate moved to the Denison Care Center due to health reasons.
Kate was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. She was a loving mother who enjoyed gathering with her family and friends. In her leisure time she enjoyed embroidering and playing cards.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William on April 14, 1994; a grandson, Jeff Montgomery; and four brothers, Anthony, Peter, Jimmy and Adam Reisz.
Survivors include one son, Richard Hanlin and his wife, Becky of Schleswig; two daughters, Joanne Banks and her husband, David of Staples, Texas; Eileen Quandt and her husband, Ron of Kiron; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brother, Robert Reisz and his wife, Laverne; Ralph Reisz and his wife, JoAnn, all of Denison; two sisters, Margaret Manz and her husband, Gene of Council Bluffs; Lucille Eggers and her husband Myron of Denison; many other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 2, 2003 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa. Fr. John Thomas served as Celebrant of the Mass. Organist Irene Feilmeier provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Ann's Family Choir. Reader was Ann Feser. The Honorary Pallbearers were all the nieces and nephews of Kate and William. Those serving as Pallbearers were: Craig Dreibelbis, Chad Montgomery, Heath Hargens, Scott Quandt, Brian Quandt, Ryan Hanlin and Jeff Feser. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 5:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 1, 2003 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at O'Connor Hall, served by St. Ann's Alter Society. Charles E. Greene (1926 - 1989)
Charles E. Greene, 62, of rural Charter Oak died Saturday, March 4, 1989, of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident Thursday near Kearney, Nebraska. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township with the Rev. S.W. Holstein officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.Mr. Greene was born June 17, 1926, in Hanover Township, Crawford County, son of Herbert and Esther (Koch) Greene. His childhood was spent in the Charter Oak area where he attended rural school. After working on several farms he served in the U.S. Navy (mostly in Japan) from 1951 until his discharge in May 1953.
On January 17, 1954, he married Delores Steffen of Charter Oak. After farming on two farms in the Charter Oak area, they purchased a farm east of Ricketts. Mr. Greene was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church and community affairs and served on agricultural-related organizations. He collected and refurbished antiques.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin and his wife, Rachel of rural Charter Oak and Richard of St. Louis, Missouri; a daughter, Joyce Greene of Pocatello, Idaho; his mother, Esther Greene of Charter Oak; one grandson; six brothers, Herbert of Edwardsburg Michigan, Kenneth of Minneapolis, Wayne of Elkhart, Indiana, Walter of Glenwood, Minnesota, Loren of Plano, Texas and Larry of Annandale, Minnesota; six sisters, Marie Kuhlmann of Charter Oak, Elaine Holten of Minneapolis, Shirley Christensen and Esther Martin both of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Karen Willhite of Gladstone, Oregon and Marceline Forbord of Benson, Minnesota.

Kevin Greene (1957 - 2002)
Kevin Greene was born February 27, 1957, the son of Charles and Delores Steffen Greene. He died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at his farm near Charter Oak, Iowa at the age of forty-five.Kevin was born in Denison, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ in June of 1957 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, , Iowa and later confirmed there on April 4, 1971. He received his early education at the Charter Oak-Ute Community Schools and graduated from the Schleswig High School with the class of 1975.
On March 30, 1986, Kevin was united in marriage to Rachel Blair at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hartley, Iowa. The couple settled on the family farm near Ricketts, Iowa and were blessed with the birth of three children.
Kevin was a very devoted past member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township, where he served as an usher during his high school years and later as a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Kevin and his family had just recently moved to Denison, where he was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He loved his family and enjoyed farming with them, Kevin especially enjoyed tending to his livestock and keeping up with the farm. In his leisure time, Kevin enjoyed taking his steam engine to the Albert City Threshermen's Annual Show.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 27, 2002 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst and Rev. David Loeschen officiated at the committal service at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery and the funeral service that followed. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Lift High the Cross", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "A Might Fortress Is Our God". Honorary pallbearers were: Merlin Sandersfeld, Norman Christiansen, Richard Greene, Don Kuhlmann, Art Bohlmann, Shawn Steffen, Roger Steffen, Delbert Rabe, Tim Dunklau and Russ Steffen. Pallbearers were: Harvey Westphalen, Steven Segebart, Steve Garrett, Harry Riessen, Milroy Rabe, Steve Struck and Ron Gloede. Leonard Lorenz Petersen (1927 - 2002)
Leonard Lorenz Petersen was born May 22, 1927, the son of August L. and Mahala D. Johannsen Petersen. He died at his home in Ute, Iowa, Friday, July 28, 2002, at the age of seventy-five. Leonard was born on the family farm in Hanover Township. He received his education in the Hanover Township Country School; after his schooling he worked on the family farm.He entered the United States Army on November 16, 1945 at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota and served his country in Germany. He was discharged on March 12, 1947 at which time he returned to Crawford County, Iowa. In 1949 Leonard went to work for Tenhulzen's Hatchery in Denison.
He was united in marriage to Arlis Wegner of Denison, on April 24, 1950 at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage, by Rev. C. W. Schmidt. In 1952 he returned to work for his father on the family farm. They later farmed in the Charter Oak and Ricketts area until 1995 at which time they moved into Ute, Iowa.
Leonard was a very loving and caring husband and father, who taught his children to be respectful and considerate. He loved to read western books by Louis L'Amoure; loved Major League Baseball with the Braves being his favorite team. He had a great love for farming and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was baptized June 24, 1927 and later confirmed on March 29, 1942 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Leonard was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute; the American Legion Post No. 66 of Charter Oak.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lance; one sister, Marie Marten; one brother John; three brothers-in-law: Marvin Petersen, Wilbur Harm, and Don Bilsten.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Arlis, of 52 years; four daughters: Lori Christman and her husband Byron of Ute; Lorene Reimer and her husband Dennis of Schleswig; Leanne Neu and her husband Darrell of Pueblo, Colorado; Leesa Kuhlmann and her husband Joel of Ute; two sons: Lynn Petersen and his wife Kerri of Spokane, Washington; and Layne Petersen of Sioux City, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two brothers: Edmund Petersen and his wife Marion of Denison; Earl Petersen and his wife Barbara of Vergus, Minnesota; Four sisters: Margaret Petersen of Denison; Anna Harm of Denison; Bernice Segebart and her husband Carl of Vail; and Betty Bilsten of Denison. Two brother-in-laws: Ralph Marten and his wife Marge of Denison; and Bill Wegner and his wife Jan of Norwalk, California. Other realtives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 1, 2002 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, Iowa. Rev. Ed Brandt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Organist, Lynette Thies provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "The Lord's Mv Shepherd", "Lift High the Cross", "My Faith Looks Trustingly" and "Beautiful Savior". Pallbearers were Lowell Petersen, Ryan Segebart, Mike Petersen, Dennis Marten, Lyle Petersen, John Bilsten, Tim Petersen and Roger Harm. Military honors were Homer Hall Post No. 66 from Charter Oak. A scripture service was held at 7:30 P.M., Sunday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Leonard Warren Cose (1929 - 2006)
Leonard Warren Cose was born March 10, 1929, to Dale W. and Bessie Brogden Cose of Deloit. He attended school in Deloit and was graduated from Deloit High School.As a youngster he occasionally worked for his dad, Dale Cose, in the family store. After high school he worked for Dean Franken at Thrifty's, a grocery store located where Your Treasure Chest is today.
In 1950 the U.S. Army drafted Leonard and he spent two years in the service of his country. He was in Korea for more than a year during the Korean Conflict (1950-1951). Upon being released from the Army in October of 1952, Leonard returned to Denison and went to work for J.C. Penney's. He spent 19 years working his way up to assistant manager.
In the fall of 1971 he left Penney's and began working for James Anderson at Anderson Clothing. In 1974, Anderson sold Anderson Clothing to a partnership, one partner being Leonard Cose. There was a dissolving partnership sale in 1982 and Leonard became sole owner of Anderson Clothing. In the fall of 1989, Leonard had a going out of business sale. He sold his business to Don Lally, owner of The Male Room.
Leonard Cose had time for service to the Denison community. He served as President of the Kiwanis Club; Chairman of the Retail Bureau; President of the Denison Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Community Chest; President of the Old Settlers organization and helped with elections, the last being the November 8, 2005 election.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church; Sylvan Lodge No. 507 A.F. & A.M., Denison, Iowa; former member of the Sylvan Chapter No. 207, Order of Eastern Star; Planning and Zoning Board and Customer Advisory Citizen Panel for People's Natural Gas Company. In his spare time he enjoyed his hobbies of finding and collecting old cars and traveling.
Upon returning from Korea, Leonard was united in marriage with Alice on May 23, 1952. To this union was born a daughter, Vicki Sue, in April 1953. Leonard and Alice were privileged to celebrate their 53rd anniversary May 23, 2005.
Leonard died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 76 years, 11 months and 26 days.
Including his parents Leonard was preceded in death by four brothers, Jennings, Mervin, Allen and Jesse Cose and two sisters, Wilma Ellis and Erma Stevenson.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Alice of Denison; daughter, Vicki and husband, Donald (Brad) Kingsbury of Blencoe, Iowa; two sisters, Thelma Lyman of Denison and Yvonne Holdsworth of Manilla; one brother, Curtis Cose and wife, Laura Mae of Debit; sister-in-law, Linnea Cose of Larchwood, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 10, 2006, Leonard's 77th birthday, at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa, with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Music for the service was provided by Sue Rosener singing, "On Eagle's Wings" and "He Touched Me", with Nancy Miles serving as organist. Pallbearers were Dale Wight, Larry Struck, Butch Munson, Dennis Bell, Roger Sims and Robert Melby. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the interment the family cordially invited everyone to return to the church and join them for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by the United Methodist Women. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements where at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, 2006, a Masonic Service was conducted by Sylvan Lodge No. 507 A.F. & A. M., Denison, Iowa.

Leslie A. Petersen (1920 - 2001)
Leslie A. Petersen was born July 18, 1920, the son of John and Lulu Smith Petersen. He died at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, Monday, December 24, 2001 at the age of eighty-one.Les was born on a farm in East Boyer Township, near Manilla, Iowa. He grew up there receiving his education in a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he helped his family. On August 24, 1942, Les enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country as an aviation machinist until September 1945.
July 18, 1948, Leslie was united in marriage to Betty Hulsebus at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ and confirmed in December of 1948 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. In 1954, they settled in Omaha, Nebraska and were blessed with the birth of five children. He worked as a carpenter, and was a member of the Carpenter's Local 444 in Omaha.
Les was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his family. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in. Omaha. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, and working with his tools in his garage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Raymond, in infancy, Howard, and Alfred; and one sister, Clara Hatala.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Omaha; four daughters, Carol Johnson and her husband, Kenneth of Lebanon, Connecticut; Diane Allen, June Petersen and Vicki Petersen, all of Omaha; and one son, Rodney Petersen of Omaha; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bernice Olson of St. James, Minnesota; Dorothy Shiery of Bethany, Oklahoma; Audrey Kline of Dunlap, Iowa; and Reita Petersen of St. James, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Loretta Petersen of Denison; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2001, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Rev. David Sewing and Vicar James Krueger officiated the service and inturnment at Hayes Township Cemetery in Westside, Iowa. Lorna J. (Hulsebus) Petersen (1920 - 2001)
Lorna J. Petersen was born May 21, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Sophie Marie Bertram Hulsebus. She died Monday, December 3, 2001 at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-one.Lorna was born on a farm near Buck Grove, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on June 24, 1920 and later confirmed on April 5, 1936 by Rev. William Frese, at the same time that Elmer was confirmed. She received her education in a rural school in Washington Township and after completing her education, Lorna helped on the family farm, along with helping neighbors and doing some baby sitting.
On January 3, 1942, Lorna was united in marriage to Elmer Petersen, on the day of Lorna's parents twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The couple settled on a farm northwest of Denison and were blessed with the birth of four children.
Lorna was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and their Ladies Aid. She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed making quilts for her family. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, dancing and fishing, especially at Lake View and Jackson, Minnesota. Lorna and Elmer loved traveling together
Lorna was preceded in death by her parents, one infant daughter, Donna Loween Petersen, one great-grandson, Trystan Lindberg and one brother, Boyd Hulsebus.

Phyllis Emma (Kunze) Baak (1924 - 2007)
Phyllis Emma Baak was born May 8, 1924 on a farm near Charter Oak, Iowa the daughter of Fred and Elsie Neddermeyer Kunze. She died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa at the age of eighty-two surrounded by several of her children and grandchildren.Phyllis was baptized May 29, 1924 by Pastor Amstein and confirmed on April 10, 1938 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Phyllis received her education at St. John's Lutheran School in Charter Oak.
She married Wilbur Gloede on June 10, 1942 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Soldier Township, Charter Oak and were blessed with five children. Wilbur passed away October 11, 1954.
She married Edward Baak on February 8, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Schleswig by Pastor Wiese. Edward brought into the marriage two of his own children that Phyllis welcomed with open arms. Ed and Phyllis were blessed with two children. Edward died on October 28, 1998.
Phyllis worked as a secretary at Baak Implement for many years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Phyllis was a loving Mother. She loved to spend her time baking, gardening, quilting and raising St. Bernards. The couple enjoyed traveling, and Phyllis was always excited about trips to Lake Okoboji. Ed and Phyllis enjoyed doing wood crafts and redoing furniture.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Elsie Kunze; her first husband, Wilbur Gloede; brothers Fred Jr. and Lawrence Kunze; her second husband, Edward Baak; one daughter, Maureen Petersen; and one grandson, Scott Gloede.

Robert Joseph DeMey was born August 13, 1925, the son of Henry and Adela Meggers DeMey. He died at his home in Dow City, Tuesday, April 22, 1997, at the age of seventy-one.Bob was born in Goodrich Township, Denison, Iowa, where he received his education. He entered the United States Army in 1943, serving his country with the 105th Infantry Regiment during World War II, receiving his honorable discharge in 1946.
April 7, 1947, Bob was united in marriage to Gwenith Brink at the United Methodist Church in Denison. The couple settled in Vail and were blessed with the birth of three children. Bob was employed as the owner and operator of Feed Mill and Grain in Denison, until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dow City and the American Legion. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and traveling.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald. Robert Peter Jensen (1920 - 1998)
Robert Peter Jensen was born August 7, 1920, the son of Emil and Florence Jackson Jensen. He died at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa, Sunday, December 6, 1998 at the age of seventy-eight. Robert was born in Denison, Iowa where he grew up receiving his education in the Denison Community Schools. He graduated from high school with the class of 1939.After completing his education, Robert was united in marriage to Elma VanDusen on September 29, 1940 in Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple settled in Denison and Robert was drafted by the U.S. Army serving his country in Okinawa during World War II. Upon completing his military duties and receiving an Honorable Discharge, he returned to Denison where they were blessed with the birth of three children.
In 1955, the family moved to Anaheim, California where he was manager of a grocery chain. In 1956, they moved to Garden Grove, California where they settled for seventeen years before settling in Placentia, California. In 1986 they returned to Denison, and moved to Charter Oak in 1994.
In his leisure time, Robert enjoyed oil painting, and wood working. His out of doors enjoyment found him working on the farm raising horses and hunting, but he was fond of baking and cooking. Additionally, he collected recorded music and was always looking for old record albums and eight-track cassettes. Robert was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who took delight entertaining his family, especially, his grandchildren. He was a member of Homer Hall Post 66 in Charter Oak.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Ronald. Steve Zeno Ernst (1923 - 1975)
Funeral services for Steve Zeno Ernst, 52, of Schleswig were held Monday, December 15, 1975, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at Ricketts. Mr. Ernst was dead on arrival at a Sioux City hospital Friday of injuries he suffered in a two-truck collision near Schleswig. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery at Mapleton. Lauren Hollister Post 494 of the American Legion conducted graveside military rites.Mr. Ernst was born May 17, 1923 at Creighton, Nebraska. The family moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He moved to Mapleton in 1948.
He married Louise Weifenbach August 14, 1948 at Onawa. He was employed by Haubrich Construction Co., at Mapleton several years, and served as a member of the Mapleton Police Department from 1956 to 1963. In 1963, the Ernsts moved to Soldier Township where he farmed for Herbert Teut, and moved to Schleswig in September of this year, and was employed by Schleswig Transfer. He was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include the widow, four daughters, Mrs. Robert (Shirley) Jordan of Blair, Nebraska, Miss Betty Ernst of Sioux City, and Sally and Linda, both at home; a grandson; his mother, Mrs. Edna Ernst of Corona, California; three brothers, Dave of Baxter Springs, Kansas, and Jay and Charles both of Corona; and two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Barbara) Davids of Osmond, Nebraska and Mrs. Louise Venhuse of Riverbank, California.

William Henry Sonnichsen (1920 - 1999)
William Henry Sonnichsen was born in Deloit, Iowa, August 19, 1920 the son of Wilhelm and Hanna Stang Sonnichsen. He was Baptized in Christ in October of 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.In 1925 his parents moved to Denison and William received his early childhood education at Zion Lutheran School until 1934 at which time his family moved to a farm south west of Buck Grove, where he completed his education in a rural school near their home. William was confirmed in the Lutheran faith, March 25, 1934 at the Zion Lutheran Church by Pastor Wm Frehse.
On February 8, 1942, he was united in marriage to Frieda Beermann at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove by Pastor Lilie. William and Frieda made their home on a farm near Buck Grove until February 14, 1945 at which time the couple moved to Denison. To this union a daughter Elaine and a son Le Roy were born.
William was employed as drayman for many years, then working for the City of Denison, a salesman for Omar Bakeries for two years and then worked as a salesman for Randy's Frozen Meats of Boone for twenty six years; in 1982 he retired from Randy's Meats and began driving a bus for the Head Start School.
William died on Friday, March 26, 1999 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of 78. William was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather; who was a very patient man and who was also blessed with a very positive out look on life and everyone he knew. In his leisure time, William enjoyed camping and early morning walks. He never complained and always had time to help and visit with people. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Trio Cafe and indulging in a game of cards.
He was preceded in death by his parents; he leaves to mourn, his wife of fifty seven years, Frieda; one daughter Dr. Elaine Sutterer of Fort Myers, Florida; one son Lee Sonnichsen and his wife, Denise of Denison; three grandchildren: Brandy Marie Sonnichsen of Denison; Michelle Strezishar and her husband, Tom of Dumfries, Virginia; Michael Sutterer and his wife, Laura of Gainesville, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Jacob Strezishar; two brothers-in-law, Vernon Beermann and his wife Lillian of Colorado; Thorwald Johannsen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, March 29, 1999 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Henry Henningsen singing "How Great Thou Art" and "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me" and congregational hymn "I'm But a Stranger Here". Honorary Pallbearers were the Golden K Kiwanis Club. Pallbearers were: Mike Petersen, Sylvester Greder, Louis Gehring, Phillip Williams, Paul Kraus and Jerry Hicks. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Larry Gene Beeck (1940 - 2006)
Larry Gene Beeck was born on Mav 29, 1940, the son of Fred and Lillian Jepsen Beeck. He died Monday, May 22, 2006, at his home in Schleswig, Iowa at the age of sixty-five.Larry was born af home on his parents' farm north of Denison, Iowa and baptized in Christ on August 18, 1940. He received his education in Goodrich Township No.3 School until 7th grade and then graduated with the class of 1958 from Schleswig Community School.
On October 4, 1959, Larry was united in marriage to Jolene Clausen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and was blessed with five children. After working at Farmland Foods in Denison for five years, he began farming Southeast of Schleswig. Then the couple moved to the Raymond Henningsen farm Southwest of Schleswig in 1965. They purchased the farm in 1971. In later years Larry began selling seed to area farmers. He retired from farming in 1997, but continued to help his twin sons on the farm until his death.
On January 11, 2000,. Larry was united in marriage to Barb (Miller) Wingrove at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa and they made their home in Schleswig.
Larry was confirmed and became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig on June 14, 1959. He was involved in various community and church organizations. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family, especially fishing with his grandchildren. Larry and Barb enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Palm Desert, California. He was an avid outdoorsman who in his leisure time enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. He especially enjoyed golfing on the variety of courses with the Monday Men's Senior League. The highlight of his golf career was winning the 2005 A.J. Sinn Award in the Schleswig Golf Club Labor Day Tournament.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jolene in 1998, his father-in-law, Leonard Clausen and his father-in-law, Ralph Miller.
Survivors include his wife, Barb of Schleswig; two daughters, Tami Walker and her husband, Drew of Plainfield, Illinois; Tina Beeck and her husband, Greg Thurman of LaGrande, Oregon; three sons, Todd Beeck and his wife, Connie of Kansas City, Missouri; Michael F. Beeck and his wife, Tracy; Mark Beeck and his wife, Theresa, all of Schleswig; three step-daughters, Dawn Lehnert and her husband, Scott; DaNae Krutzfeldt and her husband, Paul, all of Iowa City; Danielle Wingrove of Virginia Beach, Virginia; fourteen grandchildren, Krista, Shawna and Chelsey Walker; Carly Beeck; Beeck, Miller and James Thurman; Kirsten, Makayla and Keenan Beeck; Garrett, Madison and Jazlyn Beeck; and Bailey Lehnert. Also two brothers, Art Beeck and; his wife, Lorraine of Charter Oak; Robert Beeck and his wife, Janet of Schleswig; three sisters, Judy Strandburg and her husband, Larry of Schleswig; Jane Dowty and her husband, Douglas of Sergeant Bluff; and Lorna Gilmore of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his mothers-in-law, Mildred Clausen of Denison and Arlene Miller of Schleswig; a brother-in-law, Bobby Miller and his wife, Janis of Plankinton, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Mae Bielenberg and her husband, Dale of Denver, Colorado; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the services and grave side rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist Art Beeck as he sang, "The Lord's Prayer" and for the Congregational hymns, "The Lamb", "Lift High, the Cross" and "How Great Thou Art." Those serving as pallbearers were, Larry Clausen, Richard Fredericks,; Wayne Miller, Leon Clausen, Delbert Clausen, Rawlo Kastner, Don Clausen, and Gary Peters. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of the arrangements.

LuCille Elizabeth (Comstock) Vetter (1939 - 1997)
LuCille Elizabeth Comstock entered this life on April 27, 1939 at the farm home of her parent's Geary and Elizabeth Segebart Comstock in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was the youngest of their five children. At the age of 5 the family moved to Denison where LuCille attended Zion Lutheran School. She was baptized at Zion on October 11, 1943 and confirmed there March 29, 1953.She graduated with the first class of Denison Community High School in 1957. Four years later she attained her B.A. degree from Buena Vista College, graduating on June 1, 1961. She taught 5th grade at Dow City.
On May 27, 1962, she was married to Duane Vetter of Westside at Zion Lutheran Church. They settled on a farm north east of Manilla. For the next five years she substituted at the Ar-We-Va and Manilla schools. She and Duane were the parents of four children: Alan, Brian, Cathy and Russell. LuCille enjoyed being called mom by her children's friends. Besides helping Duane on the farm her hobby of doll making became a small business for her, and for 25 years she attended craft shows in Iowa and Nebraska. In 1992 they moved to Denison when Duane retired. LuCille enjoyed her part time work at the Aquatic Center and with Hallmark taking care of the greeting cards first at Pamida and then Wal-Mart.
LuCille was preceded in death by her parents Geary and Elizabeth Comstock and a brother G. LeRoy Comstock. Those who remain are her husband Duane Vetter, her children Alan and wife Cheryl Vetter of Akron, Iowa, Brian and wife Diane Vetter of Manilla, Iowa, Cathy and husband George Pickup of Fairbank, Iowa and Russell Vetter of Ida Grove, Iowa. Three grandchildren: David, Kyle and Nathan Vetter of Manilla, brother Merritt Comstock and wife Junith of Denison, two sisters Ruby and husband Henry Herrmann of Arvada, Colorado and Marilyn Jean and husband John Deppe of Thornton, Colorado, and one sister-in-law Sharon Comstock of Arnolds Park, Iowa, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 7, 1997 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. Marilyn V. (Beymer) Babbe (1937 - 1989)
Marilyn V. Babbe, 51, of Mapleton died unexpectedly Saturday, May 20, 1989, at her home. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with the Rev. Dick Krambeck officiating. Music selections were "One Day at a Time" and "Old Rugged Cross" by Mrs. Marie Whiteing, organist and Anna Wording, soloist. Pallbearers were Kevin Beymer, Duane Miller, Dale Means, Charles Tromp, Richard Lindblom and Vern Wood. Burial was in Heisler Cemetery at Mapleton. A prayer service was held Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Walter Funeral Home in Mapleton.Mrs. Babbe, the former Marilyn Beymer, daughter of Carl and Isabelle (Storjahann) Beymer was born June 9 1937, in Denison.
She married Gilbert Babbe on July 29,1956, in Denison. The couple lived at Denison until May, 1957, when they moved to Council Bluffs. In January, 1964, they moved to Mapleton. She was assistant librarian at the Mapleton Public Library for several years and had been a waitress the last six years at the Beef-N-Brew restaurant at Mapleton. Mrs. Babbe was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter 222.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters: Mrs. Randy (Carla) Welch of Webster City and Kathy, Carrie, Cheryl and Chana Babbe, all of Sioux City; two grandsons: Aaron and Logan Welch; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Babbe of Mapleton; three sisters: Mrs. Duane (Sue) Miller of Denison, Mrs. Russell (Carol) Stone of Illinois and Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Farley of Coggan; five brothers: Richard of California, Dale of Tulsa, Okla., Raymond of Denison, Allen of Illinois and James Beymer of Denison. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Carl Jr.

Milford Duane Schultz (1933 - 1992)
Milford Duane Schultz was born on July 7, 1933, the son of Leonard and Dorothy Knop Schultz. He died June 25, 1992 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of fifty-eight years.Milford grew up in Hanover Township and was baptized a Christian on July 29, 1933. He was later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 3, 1947 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. He began his education in a rural school near his home and continued his education at the Schleswig Community High School where he graduated with the Class of 1951.
On May 8, 1955, Milford was united in marriage to Delores Else at the United Church of Christ in Schleswig. The couple settled in the region and were blessed with the birth of three children. He subsequently became in-volved in several entrprises including: a dairy route from 1955 to 1956 for the Odebolt Dairy; a partner in the S & S Bowling Alley in 1957; the trucking industry with Schleswig Transfer from 1958 to 1964, where livestock, freight and steel were shipped throughout the United States and Canada; and farming from 1964 to present, and for which he had a special fondness. Additionally, Milford was a member of the board of directors of Schleswig Sausage, Inc. in Schleswig and was also president of the board of the Farmers Lumber and Grain Company.
Milford had an interst in sports and was, for several years, an active participant in the Schleswig Merchants, a local softball club. Additionally, he volunteered his efforts on the Schleswig Fire Department, an activity lasting five years, and enjoyed occupying his time repairing machinery and making articles. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and also a member of their voters assembly. He was an assistant Sunday School Superintendent at Immanuel and taught the eighth grade class. He was a loving and caring husband and father who also had a deep and lasting affection for his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1973 and his father-in-law in 1985. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy of Schleswig; his (wife) Delores of Schleswig; two daughters, Sherry Hornung and her husband Phil of Union City, California; and Sheila Schultz of Overland Park, Kansas; and one son Bradley Schultz and his wife, Judy of Schleswig. Also five grandchildren; two brothers, Lorenz and his wife Joydine of Schleswig and Roger and his wife Maria of Sioux City, Iowa; and one sister Jolene Sievers and her husband, Harlow of Humbolt, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 29, 1992 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Pastor Donald R. Wagner officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns "Beautiful Savior" and "Be Still, My Soul." Pallbearers were: Dennis Reimer, Donald Clausen, Steve Garrett, Ervin Neddermeyer, Rhonda Puis, Kelly Sievers Pruneau, Delmer Clausen and Murlin Johannsen. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter A. Huebner and Sons' Funeral Home in Schleswig.

Richard Hans Pickel (1933 - 2001)
Richard Hans Pickel was born September 3, 1933, the son of Peter and Jane Maas Pickel. He died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, at the age of sixty-seven.Richard was born on a farm southeast of Schleswig. He was baptized in Christ at Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 27, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. He attended elementary schools around the area and graduated from Schleswig High School with the class of 1950.
After completing his education, Richard worked on Walter Ernst's farm until entering the United States Air Force in 1953. He was based in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he attended Radar Mechanic School and was subsequently assigned to serve in Japan for one and one-half years during the Korean War. After returning from his overseas' duties, he was based at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, for the remainder of his military career.
On July 3, 1954, Richard was united in marriage to Lois Jensen at the Lutheran Church in Worthington, Minnesota. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1957, Richard returned to Crawford County and farmed in the area for several years before settling on the family farm northwest of Schleswig. While continuing to farm, in the early 1980's, Richard became an insurance adjuster, starting with crop insurance and later worked casualty with Farmers Mutual Insurance of Schleswig. He retired from Farmers Mutual in 1998, but continued part-time with his agricultural adjusting with Rain and Hail Insurance through the Fall of 2000.
Richard was a member ot the Immanuel Lutheran Church and of Schleswig's V.F.W. Post 3930, serving on their Color Guard for many years. He was a talented carpenter and electrician. He loved fishing, hunting, and camping. Richard enjoyed watching western films, especially the scenery and horses. He often played cards with his family on Sunday, spent time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed being with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Lois of Schleswig; one son, Richard D. Pickel of Des Moines; two daughters, Lori Kragel and her husband, Gene of Ute; Lashelle Carlson and her husband, Lloyd of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Tim Pickel of Sac City, Lance and Lana Carlson of West Des Moines; two brothers, Ben and his wife, Betty of Mapleton; Wilbert and his wife, Betty of Sac City; four sisters, Evelyn Stamm and her husband, Gene of Omaha; Rubie Kastner and her husband, Rawlo of Schleswig; Beverly Rix and her husband, Allen of Manning; Dorothy Rix and her husband, Larry of Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Linda Miller and her husband, Bob of Cedar Rapids, and many close relatives and friends. He will be deeply missed by all of them.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2001 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev.
